Hey All, So I Have Landed in Brazil! Flying into Sao Paulo Was Amazing!!! The Color is so truly beautiful!! The buildings are oranges reds greens blues yellows nestled in lush green rain forest, with fields of Red Red earth breaking up the intense green. Sao Paulo is Mountainous, very much like vancouver's rolling mountains. I was to take a plane to Salvador from there. I went to the gate I was supposed to go to, they scanned my ticket and the announcement came over the intercom to board the plane. i jumped up and got to the front of the line, we waited for a long time for the plane. they scanned my ticket and on the plane I went. it was a blessing that I asked the staff what seat I was in, he ... read more

Neguinho do Samba was a founder of Samba-Reggae. He passed away on Saturday of a heart-attack at the age of 54. He was a part the Ilê Aiyê and Olodum. He arranged the Olodum piece for the song They Don't Care About Us, Michael Jackson, 1996. I met him once in the beginning of the program when I went to check out Banda Didá, which is a all women's percussion group that he founded with the money he earned through the aforementioned piece. He was telling us (a group of female students that wanted to volunteer to teach English or Spanish to the women and the children of his organization) about how and why he started the organization and about his work, but I didn't understand the details about what he said, my Portuguese was not ... read more

We stayed in the historic center of Salvador known as the Pelourinho (Pel). In English, "Pelourinho" means whipping-post. It was named as such because it is where Africans were sold into slavery upon arriving in Salvador. Most of the buildings in the Pel were built while Brazil was a Portuguese colony. Brazil was the seat of the Portuguese Monarch during the period that Napoleon's Army possessed Portugal. The King of Portugal moved to Brazil until Europe was able to push the French back into France. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Portugal_(1777%E2%80%931834). Salvador lived up to its reputation of colorful food, people, and music. It is very photogenic. Wolfgang and Miranda (of Amsterdam), who we met in the Amazon jungle, typically stay in hostels when they travel, so we thought we would give it a try. We stayed in a Hostel in ... read more

To be honest, I missed the afternoon part of it because I was on a family outing until 4:30p. And I was so tired after that I took a nap for one hour. Most of my friends went to check it out around 2p. By the time I got up, everyone I knew went...and some people warned that it's not too good to go by myself, since men are such creepers here, and I don't want them bothering me, nor do I want my camera stolen. So I stayed by my window to take some shots. I was wistfully looking out the window when a phone call came. It was Greg, my neighbor, and he wanted to go hang out with the people in the parade. So.. lucky for all of us, I was able to ... read more

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/13/world/americas/13brazil.html?_r=1 I was looking through the new and saw a pic I recognized, yup, that's Salvador, my temporary home. This community has been autonomous for the last 15 years, taking care of their problems without police involvement, etc. But yeah, Carlinhos Brown went and got the/his community to work together to get infrastructure and build a music school and promote exchanges between the kids of the middle class neighborhood just beside it and the kids of Candeal. There are a lot of slums around the city. Big communities of poor people. Not ghetto or anything, just poor folks without many means of climbing up the social ladder. ... read more

A wonderful end to a wonderful weekend! It started with the Boat Tour, then a nice jazz JAM at the Modern Art Museum on Sat after watching The City of Gods (it's a good movie, but, not the type I like) with Julisa and Allegra. Today, I finally went to the beach with my family, and we ate acaraje and I ate too much shrimp to induce my allergic reaction to crustaceans. I broke out in hives as I was arriving to Sonia's Caruru Festa. Her mom was putting on a gathering to honor children (?), I'm not sure. It was very nice : ) OH, FOR LUCY: I got a pic of one of those recycled bottles! COKE!! You'll see the ring!! There is a bug on the photos page.. it messes up the amount, ... read more

The majority of the pictures will be taken during the boat tour of All Saints Bay going to Itaparica Island and Frades Island. We rented a boat to take 55 students around the bay with music and drinks. (Along the way, I saw a school of fish jumping out of the water, in and out and in and out, a few times. I didn't take any pics of that though.) There are nice beaches. We ate a good Bahian meal. Some local kids caught an iguana and it had a photo-op with me. Nice day out... I know, you want some pics of me in class 'cause no one will believe I'm here to study...(I'm studying the beaches of Brazil!! haha) My family wants to go to the beach tomorrow. I saw 2 Chinese people getting ... read more

I had to register at the Federal Police for temporary residence (since I'm staying more than 3 weeks here). Afterward, I went to Catussaba beach. I look chubbier because I have my suit under my clothes.. and I've been eating.. I dont know.. haha I also went to a birthday party of my mom's friend, who was turning 80. A lot of cake! haha. Then, I went back to Shopping Barra, hoping to snap some pictures of those balls in the water.. but they had a fashion show instead! (That occupied the space.) Next time! I took random pics of the mall. You will see American icons.. Victoria's Secret lotion which cost $9 in the States, cost R$73. $1 is R$1.8. That is around $40 to buy that, 4 times as expensive!! Well, that was the ... read more

We rolled into Recife and headed straight to the lovely neighbouring city of Olinda. Olinda has a small but superb historic centre (at times small is just what you need). It’s one of South Americas most charming and well restored gems. We enjoyed the beautiful centre full of churches, cobble stone colonial architectured streets and plazas, all magnificently restored. Olinda also boasts a vibrant artesian culture, is chilled out and full of nice little cafes and posadas. It’s a great place to come and relax for a couple of days and isn’t overrun with tourists either. We left Olinda for Recife to catch an overnight bus to a city that we had heard so much about, for good and for bad. We arrived in Salvador da Bahia, found our hostel and had another great breakfast. Pelourinho-or Pelor for short, is the historic center of Salvador. The word Pelourinho derives from a word meaning "whipping post". Salvador is currently the cultural center of Brazil because it is the oldest city in with deep connections to its colonial past and it was the first capital of Brazil from the 16-18th century. Slaves used to be brought here to work on the sugar plantations, but later, coffee and mining in the southeast became more important and the capital moved to Rio de Janeiro, and later to Brasilia. Salvador has been in the decline ever since. The population is around 3 million, making Salvador the 3rd biggest city in Brazil, after Rio with 10 million, and Sao Paulo with 19 million. According to wiki, 80% of the population here has African ancestry. We had a ... read more
