I'm staying in El Calafate at the moment, just lazing about and enjoying the nice weather. I'm staying in the best hostel I've stayed at so far. It's called America Del Sur, and it's run by a bunch of mid-20Yr old ex-pat Buenos Aires people who are so crazy and fun. And they're always chillin in the lounge with all the travellers with some sort of reggae music playing, and they've got under floor heating everywhere you go so the whole place has got just the best atmosphere.    Today I went to the Perito Moreno Glacier which was absolutely amazing! it's massive! It's about 5km's wide, and all up about as big as the Buenos Aires city. It's creaking and groaning all the time cos it moves forward at about two meters a day, and at one ... read more

Well I´m here and safe and lost and loving it! I´ve been in Buenos Aires for nearly a week now and so far everything has been awesome! thanks heaps to everyone that came out to the airport the other day, it was a great send off and kept a smile on my face all the way to Argentina. And Mark you´ll be pleased to know that the lonely planet guide you gave me was the first thing I turned to when I got there, I opened it up and pointed at a juicey looking hostel to the weird taxi driver and he delivered me in one piece so cheers. So far I´ve been just bumming around in the city doing heaps of cool stuff and meeting a lot of rad people. I went to a Boca ... read more

Hola Amigos Last week I was busy job searching - I have a job already (starts in March) but am checking out all the options. I think I will take a job that pays a little less, but offers me free Spanish courses. I´ve been taking some, and can´t really afford it, so free ones is a good idea. This past week I was in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Great time, the woman there are awesome. The city is very European looking, lots of old buildings, etc, but the streets are littered with garbage. On garbage night, people would put there stuff out, but 10 mins later poor people (who are surprisingly dressed quite well) would tear through the garbage taking whatever looked like it might be worth something. Argentina is in serious economic problems, so we ... read more

South America » Argentina » Misiones » Iguazú National Park October 20th 2003

It's not easy getting to Ushuaia, dear reader, which is the southernmost city in the world. Particularly when you travel overland on the bus from Santiago in Chile, now that's some commute! But the journal continues, and I'm glad to have made it. The city itself is spectacular as you stroll around the beautifully paved streets, while surrounded by a backdrop of snow capped mountains. The sights include taking in the gorgeous harbour which serves as the starting point for cruise ships setting sail for the final frontier of Antarctica. Ushuaia is without a doubt a unique travel destination and you can't help smiling as you walk around the city, because on this beautiful planet of ours this is truly the end of the road. It's just not possible to travel any further south and still ... read more

Puerto Iguazú forms a natural balcony that looks to Brazil over the inferior Iguazu and the Paraguay rivers through the Alto Paraná. From the city you can take different excursions and visits to the Iguazú National Park and the Iguazu Falls which are considered being one of the Seven Wonders of the World due to their natural magnificence and their wonderful vegetation, astounding those who have the possibility of getting in contact with them. There is nothing to be compared with Cataratas del Iguazú (Iguazú Falls) because they are incredible. They have 250 spectacular falls that weigh 70 meters and they are connected to the Iguazú River which originates 1300 meters above the sea level and flows into the Paraná River only to 90 meters. My advice is to explore the place by you. We took ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta August 18th 2003

Salta is the capital city of the Argentine province of Salta, located on the Valle de Lerma 1152 meters above sea level. Nicknamed in Spanish as Salta la Linda ("Salta the Beauty"), it is visited by a great many tourists because of its colonial architecture, a number of museums, but also because it's the starting point of the "Train to the Clouds" (Tren a las nubes) and to red-soiled Cafayate, as well as to other nearby tourist destinations. Throughout the province, trekking and rafting, climbing and bungee jumping are also practiced. From Salta we made trips to Valle de la luna and Tren a las nubes. To the West of Salta, the Puna's arid high plain with salty lakes (Arizaro, Pocitos) has few inhabitants, and its main city is San Antonio de los Cobres. High snowy ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires August 10th 2003

Buenos Aires ("Good Airs" in Spanish, originally meaning "Fair Winds") is the capital of Argentina and its largest city and port, as well as one of the largest cities in Latin America. The people of Buenos Aires are known as porteños ("people of the port"), acknowledging the major historical importance of the port in the development of the city and the whole nation. Buenos Aires is, in a certain way, a metaphor for Argentina. Its streets and surroundings gather over half of the country's population and represent its political, economic and cultural heart. It was home for Argentine writers Jorge Luis Borges, Adolfo Bioy Casares, Ernesto Sábato and Victoria Ocampo. And Maria Eva Duarte (Evita Peron), Carlos Gardel (a synonym of tango ), latin American revolutionary and political leader Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, not to ... read more
