The only thing missing when we got off the bus was tumbleweed crossing the roads.. We were in the "west", up in the mountains of Andes at 1660m. The plan was to get off, and take a new bus to Salta the same evening. But when we got off, the silence was so appealing that we decided to stay for just one night.. By the way, one night became three. We found a cosy small hospedaje "Casa de husped" (look this up), driven by a very attentive "mother", her daughter and the son in law. The were all wonderful people!! We meet a Danish girl named Ana, whom we quickly made good contact with. She had gotten som recommendations from the house hosts about where to eat (cheap and good).. So we agreed on going together ... read more

(Some dear friends of ours once showed us a video of them drinking wine and watching a sunset in Greece. Based on that experience, I expect that this entry might be more interesting to us than you. Please enjoy our pictures, and read the text some night when you are struggling to sleep. ) We set out mid-morning on Jan. 21st for the town of Cafayate in a popular wine producing region called the Valles Calchaquíes. We caught a collective taxi ride from the Parque San Martin in Salta with two older ladies. The drive took us 180 km along the small, relaxed Ruta 68. There was a mix of scenery along the way. The ladies and our diver liked the views of the red-hued rock formations in the Quebrada de las Conchas along the way, ... read more

Don't even try to pronounce this one, we sure can't. But they do have lots of pretty artisan craft stalls and wine flavored ice cream. Did I mention this ice cream is "con alcohol"? Lovely. ... read more

Buongiorno, The brilliant thing about Argentina is that most people understand Italiano!!!! This morning I awake to find myself in the wine producing region of Argentina......and what wine!!!!! Back to yesterday......left Salta at 7am and headed west towards Cachi.....this was after a recommendation from my host Alex.....asked the girls if they wanted to accompany me, with some private photography tuition thrown in...how could they refuse!!!!.....so of we went into this stunning valley towards Cafayate. Once in the valley we were rewarded with some amazing condors swooping over the car and catching the thermals.....we stopped immediately and spent the next 1/2 hour watching these amazing birds. We then arrived in Cachi, which is a beautiful town amongst the mountains. Had breakfast in the town square and then invited by a teacher to see the local school where ... read more

Oh Cafayete! What can we say? The asado´s were delicious, the wine was divine and the people were welcoming. The only unfortunate thing was that this was the point where our "family" had gone separate ways so were by ourselves again. Luckily, we still had one member with us. On the first day, we were greeted by the friendly family who owned the hostel. Little did we know, there are a lot more things to do in Cafayete than we thought. After being overwhelmed with the list the hostel had given us, we decided to look things over while eating emapanadas. The empañadas were delicious! We were accustomed to only 2 types of empañadas and they offered 12 different types here! Let´s just say we got super excited and stuffed ourselves. Little need to say, we ... read more

A short drive to Cafayate and we arrived at a big campsite which we pretty much had to ourselves. We spent the day walking around the town, which was pretty nice, small but pretty. The first night was typically spent on camp, as we had a lot of booze to get through and the town didn't have many pubs. We cooked some great food, and made a huge vat of mulled wine. It was another really good campsite night, finishing at a silly hour. We were up early the next day to hire Mountain bikes and cycle to a number of wineries in the area. It took us ages to find the first one, but it was absolutely stunning. We were supposed to do tastings, but quickly realised it was much cheaper to buy lots of ... read more

This entry will be short since words cannot do justice to the beauty of Cafayate. In short: WOW, WOW & WOW! We arrived at night after a long day of travels. Be warned if you are going from Valle de Fertil, it is a long trek to Cafayate. First we had to bus to La Rioja then Catamarca then Amancha de Valle then finally to Cafayate. Luckily, in the small town of Amancha de Valle there is a delicious restaurant across from the ¨bus station¨. It was really off the ¨gringo trail¨ and it was amazing, we got to know the owner of the resto, what a nice man!! In Cafayate, we stayed at Rusty-K Hostel owned and run by Walter and his wife. (If you visit Cafayate, you must stay there too!) This family run ... read more

So I´m still here! Cafayate has just been too awesome to leave. Sadly I bought a plane ticket 5 minutes ago to go to Iguazu tommorow morning, so I need to catch the 5 am bus to Salta tommorow morning. So recap. Danny has pretty much been my best friend since I got here. I mentioned the wine tours... well many more wine tours.. wine ice cream, more empanadas, and too much tasty stuff. I´m going on a diet!! So we went to the waterfalls, a nice 5 hour hike that included substantial climbing on slippery rocks, and crossing the river many many times. Eventually I sliped and fell a little but only to lose a bet to buy Danny a beer which he would not otherwise accept ;) hehehe Many nights of BBQ with friends... ... read more

Well I can´t believe where i am or how its possible i ended up here. PS: Thanks Martin!! To confess, despite the beauty and wonder of salta, I felt a little lonely and sad for reason I won´t detail. However, I met a generous soul, Martin, who worked at my hostel. We pretty much spent every day together doing basically not much, and playing jenga in the night. We even went to see a movie and it was great fun. Thanks Martin!!! so I boarded the late night bus to cafeyate. i arrived around midnight in this town and as I got closer I thought, man, where the hell am i gonna stay??? i had my lonely planet so i wasn´t tooooo worried but i felt tired and scared... willl i call, will i walk for ... read more
