Agitating over whether to go North, South, or West from Salta, and whether to take a Tour or car hire, we ended up meeting two Belgians to share a 2 day car trip South. Perfecto! The highlights were too many to recount, and photos do (only a little) more justice: *dramatic mountainous landscapes, with wildly different colours from the various mineral content *long valleys, with a tentative hold on what water is left either in the narrow rivulets remaining of the river, or under the ground *adobe (mudbrick) houses with their occupants scratching a tenuous living from the rugged and inhospitable terrain *farm animals (llamas, goats, horses, and very few sheep and cattle) happily grazing on ... (?) *climbing Garganta del Diablo (the devils throat) - an unusual erosion formation in the rocky terrain scribed at ... read more

Cafayate is a small colourful town located in the Valles Calchaquíes in the province of Salta, This place is definitely worth a visit. We took a trip into the mountainous area of Cafayate called Quebrada de Cafayate and here we were met with Cannons and the most colourful mountains ever. The mountains were shades of red, yellow, green and sometimes grey (iron, sulphur minerals produce the colours). We spent an entire day just wandering through these mountainous areas. The ground all around you in this small town is covered in sand, this was due to Cafayate being under sea level at one stage and all the sand remained. The town is quite small but have a lot of activities to offer, so when quad biking came up we did not even hesitate. The trip took us ... read more

Okay, the symbols on this keyboard aren't actually what is on this keyboard... and it's tripping me out! I am currently in Iguazu and have a lot of back blogging to do... SO... my next day, the journey to Cafayate... Off of 15 minutes of sleep, which I thought was 30, I piled onto the bus and sat in the front so that I would have some room for myself. Diego, the guide, saw me as a complete mess and conintued to help me out. I only got 15 minutes (Which my roommate told me upon his return the next day). And I am sure I am somewhere between drunk and hungover. He gave me his sympathies and continued to check in with me. I talked to an Irish girl and a German girl who had ... read more

Begge steder har ... read more

The word for today is WOW! Once again, we started at dark o'clock, but this time we didn't get back until 6 or so. We traveled to the winery-laden pueblo of Cafayate (Cah-fah-ZHA-tay). To get to the town, one needs to pass through Quedabra Cafayate (Cafayate Canyon). If yesterday was Mt. Lemmon, today was Sedona. I'm not exaggerating. This new camera starts over numbering shots every time you empty the card. As I was looking through my photo organizer, numerically there was literally an alternation between photos from today and photos from Sedona last week. I had to look for the (a) after the number to be sure what was what at times! In fact, in my first draft, I accidentally included a Sedona photo on this blog. Anyhow, it was amazing. There were these handmade ... read more

Blog time everybody. And we´ll begin with a confession. It is 3 weeks since our last blog and we have sinned oh so many times. The main one being that we´re about a month behind. We´re in Brazil right now and have just spent a week chilling on the beach...so all that follows is what´s happened in between. So after Mendoza, which for the record we found a wee bit dull....well ok, there was nothing wrong with the place, but it really wasn´t anything to write home about....so we headed to Tafi de Valle, which does absolutely sound like somewhere in Snowdonia. In Tafi we found that we were the only gringos in town - perfect! A great chance to practice our Spanglish and as a result enjoy the pleasure of seeing a dish arrive at ... read more

We had read about Indian ruins dating back about AD1000 which were home to the Quilmes Indians and was the last place to fall to the Spanish empire in 1667. This was our next stop and although we debated whether to go given that there are no direct buses, we were very pleased we made the effort. We bumped into our Australian friends in Amaiche (nearest village to the ruins) who had done some investigating and found a great tour that would flag down the bus on the main road at the end of the day and get us on our way to Cafayate. We threw our bags on the roof of an old land rover, piled into the back and we were off. Set amongst forests of cacti and built into the side of the ... read more

Then i headed to the desert in Chile to a the town of San Pedro de Atacama. This place is extremely cool, as there are loads of things to do in the surrounding area. Its bloody hot too, although its close to freezing at night. I met up with some dutch people and an english girl, we all got a hostel together. The dutch fella is over 6ft, bald, and speaks with a scottish accent.....he´s good craic though!.... In san pedro we went to see geysers at sunrise(early out of ... read more

Sometimes it's nice to take things slowly. After hitting the furthest corners of Argentina, with the inevitable long bus rides that entails, my next stop was just a few hours up the road, in Cafayate. Like Tafí, the place had apparently been packed over the Easter weekend, but when I arrived on the Monday it was pleasantly sleepy - not to mention hot. Cafayate is blessed with a wonderfully sunny climate, and some of the most spectacular scenery I've seen so far in Argentina. It also produces a fair amount of wine. My plan when I got here was to visit some of the wineries, go to the pre-Inca ruins at Quilmes, and try some wine flavoured ice cream. Well, one out of three ain't bad! Practically as soon as I walked into the hostel (Ruta ... read more

Hola again all, barely have you had time to take in and enjoy my Iguazu blog and I lumber upon you all the details of our next adventure. Hope you have the stomach. From Puerto Iguazu we endured yet another 24 hour bus journey (my concept of distances will be massively altered by the time I get back), and arrived in Salta, Northern Argentina, a burgeoning attraction for travellers and tourists alike for its natural landscapes, vineyards, architecture, and opportunities to take road trips scattered with incredible views. First impressions of Inti Huasi, to be our hostel for a over at week, were excellent, as resident legend Victor greeted me with a freshly made brew: this was to become a pattern throughout our stay, during which we have been treated mildly like Kings. As in Northern ... read more
