Quilmes and the Museo Pachamama We got up early the next morning to drive the 55 miles south to the pre-Columbian ruins at Quilmes. The settlement is located at 1,978 meters above sea level, and dating from around 1000 a.d., it was the largest human settlement before the Spaniards arrived in Argentina. Covering about 75 acres, the city supported a population upwards of 5,000 in terraced structures with thick walls, overlooking irrigated farmlands. The Quilmes Indians were the last native group to be defeated by the Spainards. The last 2000 survivors were deported to Buenos Aires, where their name now represents an industrial suburb and a beer factory. We were happy to arrived early and have a chance to climb around and take some photos before the tour buses arrived. We checked out the small museum ... read more

Salta to Cachi The road from to Salta to Cachi starts out going through the lush Lerma Valley. Things quickly changed from the green to the colorful rocks of the Quebrada de Escoipe. This was the first place in South America where we saw cactus. This mostly gravel, winding road climbs to over 10,000 ft. You may have heard of the famous Train to the Clouds, but we felt like we were in the Rental Car to the clouds as we drove higher and higher. The clouds really came down all around us at one point and we could barely see anything. Fortuntately the burros along the road were wise enough to stay out of our way! As we descended, we drove through Parque Nacional Los Cardones named for the cardone (or candelabra) cactus that grow ... read more

For the last week and a bit I´ve been getting in touch with nature in Patagonia, which is the very very south of Argentina and Chile. After a 35 hour bus ride from Bariloche (yes 35 hours!), we were in El Calafate, Argentina! I was with two chirpy Northern Ireland girls named Julie and Kate that were from the Spanish school in Bariloche and by coincidence were on the same bus to El Calafate, so we banded together to check out Patagonia! The town is very small and touristy, but pretty with lots of wood cabins. Mostly it serves as a base for the Perito Merino Glacier nearby. The glacier is one of the few in the world still advancing (bloody global warming!), and it is HUGE! We took a boat ride that goes quite close ... read more

Before arriving, I had some romantic visions of Cafayate….small vineyards like wheel spokes branching out from a cozy town, all nestled among more of my favorite Quebrada colors. And it is just that but, when you mix in hordes of Argentine teenagers and university students, it loses some of its appeal. So during my two days in Cafayate, my main goal was to avoid the noise and try to stick to my romantic picture of the place. With ominous storms always around the corner, signs that lead to nowhere, and badly blazed paths that only goats can figure out, it was easy enough to lose myself from the crowd. I took a sandy road to a sandy path up the mountainside to look for some caves. No caves, no ruins, either, when I later looked for ... read more

Finally had some time to add an entry after lots of sightseeing and Patagonian lamb and red wine. The trip to Perito Moreno was probably one of the best ever. The glacier is awe inspiring and it kept everybody´s interest all through the day. It is particularly good when some of the ice falls from the glacier and the noise reverberates around you like fireworks. Met a couple from London who we spent all day with and then all night with for dinner and drinks. Had some fantastic Patagonian lamb which is the best I have ever tasted. John McHugh would love it. Next day up early again for a boatrip around the Los Glaciares National Park which has lots of glaciers and icebergs. The boat weeved betwen the icebergs and the colour was amazing when ... read more

Out of Chile, and into argentinian Patagonia. The sign at the border said 'The Malvinas are Argentinian'- the only really large sign there; maybe to reflect the 25 year anniversary of the lost war. Gary has a UK passport, but mine's Irish, so I told him he's on his own, loyal as ever ! A 5 hour bus journey over the pampas brought us to el Calafate. The pampas was just what you expect, a vast expanse of nothing- no houses, or people, and barely a road. The bus spent half the journey on a dirt road. A few guanacos, rheas, sheep on huge estancias and that's just about it all the way. Ther hotel in Calafate is very new, all wood, like a big cabin, so we're lucky. The town itself is very much a ... read more

Here are some photos of the first bit of the trip from my camera. Have finally got them put on a CD and found an internet cafe that will let me put the CD in the machine! Had an amazing last few days in our hire car driving through the Andes, one hell of an experience. No photos of that yet but will do blog soon with all the news from that bit of the trip. We are back in Salta now just to return the now very dusty hire car and catch a bus or two onto next part of the trip heading north to the boarder with Bolivia. bye for now love Rachxxxx... read more

Tucuman It was time for a break from BA but was I ready for the 23hr bus journey? Cama? Not for me thanks, I want discomfort for the whole nine yards. I really want to feel ready to explore the North. We actually wanted to go straight to Cafayate but you can't so, on the fifth or fifteenth stop, we had to change to another bus, which meant a 4hr wait so we took the opportunity to have a look around Tucuman, albeit a rather sleepwalk look. After maybe 10 mins of walking and trying to convince our body clock it was lunch time and not breakfast, we gave up and decided to sit down for lunch with a good bottle of wine and the only veg option on the menue (good old pasta). Tucuman is ... read more

We left Tucuman with good instructions on how to get to the Nomade hostel in Tafi del Valle. We were glad that we did.....´over the bridge and turn right to a pink house'. It was 200m down a dark track and you could feel the warmth of the welcome from some distance. We sat down at 11pm to a healthy 'asado' barbeque with all the other hostellers and finished with cake for the birthday girl who happened to be staying. Our plan had been to stay just one night and head on to Cafayate. However, the hostel staff persuaded us to stay another day and do a hike into a nearby valley. Our guide turned up the next morning and we went to the bottom of the nearby mountain in a battered taxi. Our route took ... read more
