The tour to and from Cafayate took 12 hours. There was a good mix of people in the van, two Brits, two Americans, the rest from Argentina and me. We stopped to take photos of geological sites along the way. The mountains are red clay, sentimentary rock. Hmmmmm, about twenty of my photos did not transfer to my flashdrive and I deleted the camera....guess they are gone. Oh, well, you get the idea of the day from photos. The colours were really vivid as the sun began to set....ooops, those are the missing pictures....... read more

Here we are in Cafayate, Argentina. We left Chilecito on a fine day and made our way to Andalgala. The problem is that there were a lot of road works, with the urgent need to 'Pave the World', I guess, before the oil runs out ?. If they continue at this rate, before long we will be able to do Harley tours over here, just joking really, as we there are still plenty of adventure roads over here... Leo took a dive while exiting one of the river crossing on the road from Andalgala to Santa Maria, but lucky for him it was a sandy landing, he winded himself and hurt his pride a bit, and broke the left hand mirror, he is currently out shopping for a replacement. Actually he featured high on yesterdays ride, ... read more

I took an organised tour to Cafayate today, because I thought that I would see more variety than if I went alone. In addition, I am truly tired of arranging buses (often 2,3,4 buses) to get to a location. It´s exhausting, and I didn´t want to go through what happened in Paraguay. Saltá ´province´s main produce is tabacco. It is pretty driving in the ´country´ towards Cafayate, since you can see tabacco plants left and right, and in the distance the green mountains. Quebrada de Cafayate is amazing!!! I cannot describe the feeling. It is now a canyon, but millions of years ago, the OCEAN used to come right up there! (ps: the ocean is nowhere NEAR this site now). In the canyon, along on the cliffs and mountains, there are fossils from when there were ... read more

Bodega Nanni ... read more

Oh my god! What an amazing New Year I had! Everything just seems to be working out perfectly. Had I not forgotten my passport and missed buses etc I would have missed out on so many experiences. When I said before that I would be happier seeing the stars on NYE instead of dancing I didn´t realise that I could do both!! Just a quick aside first though. Getting off the beaten track has been great in terms of the people I have met. I have hardly seen any english /australian backpacker types. Nearly everyone I have met recently has been from Argentina which is great. The hostel I was staying in organised a BBQ for NYE which was really good fun with lots of dancing and eating. At about 1am they whisked us off in ... read more

The tick was the size of a small grape. I found his fat body buried in the tan fur of Tidie´s neck. I was careful not to grab strands with my thumb and forefinger. The tick waved his legs feebly, frantic for his warm home.I dropped him on the ground and let my foot drop. Like a ketchup packet, his belly split and spurted stale blood into the dirt. As Tidie trotted away to chase chickens,I sat down in my seat at the table, ready to resume our game of UNO. Tom, a belgium I had met at the boarder between Bolivia and Argentina, chatted rapidly in Spanish with the children, a boy and girl of about twelve. I listened feebly, the words blurring together in my ears. My mindwandered, and I stared into the distance, ... read more

Salta is by far my favorite city so far. Incredible colonial architecture backdropped by insane mountain landscapes. I met a friend from luxenburge and another guy from Buenos aires in Salta and the guy from buenos aires has a car so we drove today to cafayate, 3 hours south of salta. the drive was so beautiful. the road winds through the dessert mountains and the mountains are all different colors, green, brown, tan, white, red, orange, and texture is extremely varied. this landscape is of another planet, we stopped at la garganta del diablo (the throat of the devil) which is a cavern that pierces a moutain, all the mountains have easily deciverable layers. we are going to explore the mountains around cafayate tomarrow. salud. ... read more

Our bus the next day to the small wine-producing town of Cafayate takes us through this crazy colourful canyon called the Quebrada de Cafayate. We strike up a friendship with 2 Australians, Rob and Keiran, when a bottle of wine stashed in our overhead luggage falls out and nearly brains Rob. We check into the same hostel, where we link up with Ray and Ana from New Zealand on the roof terrace and together we set about sampling the excellent local wines. My favorite is a light fruity white Torrontes, best icy cold. It´s a civilised few days spent touring the local vineyards, tasting at the bodegas and cheese farms...picnics at waterfalls after 20km walks...the Salta Philharmonic playing a free open-air concert one night in the lovely town square. But us English speaking nations do seem ... read more

Yesterday night Judith, Lea and I went out to an amazing Parilla place. Parilla is equivalent to BBQing without the BBQ sauce in the states. HOWEVER Argentina really knows how to make some satisfying meats... La Casona del Molino was where we all indulged in way too much food, but man was it good! When in Salta, eat at La Casona del Molino--- PLUS there was live music. great night! Quebrada de Cafayete, what amazing landscape! There were so many impressive sights as we drove the 183 km long National Route 68 from Salta to Cafayete.... As we drove along road 68 I felt like I was exploring Mars, with the red sandstone landforms in each direction I looked. It´s beautiful contrasting colors were further exagerated by the beautiful day we had yesterday. There is almost ... read more
