Well......its not over till the fat lady sings!!!!!!..... I should be at this moment somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean heading back towards Europe........but I'm not!!!!! I'm in the Sheraton Santiago having a mojito by the pool sending you this blog courtesy of the biggest dim wits ever...IBERIA!!!!!!!!!!........ Back to this morning when I arrived at Santiago airport to check in for my flight to Madrid........huge queues!...but I had printed all my boarding passes and checked in online last night....so I demanded to drop my bags off and continue through to the gate.......no way ......the flight was delayed 12 hours!!!!!!........I went beserk at Iberia....called them the most incompetent airline I had ever the missfortune of using.....I said that I would not stay in the airport for all that time and as the flight was delayed more than ... read more

Buonasera, What can I say............what a fabulous city......very sophisticated ( also expensive....on a par with Europe but prohibitively expensive by S American standards ), very clean and modern. All the designer shops you can think of and an excellent fish market, where I ate at the Galleon ( excellent sea bass )..which goes some way to redeem the disaster in Punta Arenas. Huge plazas and lots of people and traffic......forgotton what a big city was like!!!! Found the best coffee ever.....Haiti........and the girls serving it werent bad either!! Excellent day and now looking forward to Valparaiso an Vin del Mar which i have been told are completely different! A domani..... saluti....e sogni d'oro..... Mario ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Punta Arenas December 4th 2009

Buongiorno, From a very hot Santiago de Chile.....over 30 at 10.30am......makes a change from freezing Punta Arenas!! Ok lets go back a couple of days, as i have not had the chance to get internet connection...... As I said Torres de Paine was spectacular, but a lot less so was Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas. In fact I was dissapointed with Punta arenas as originally I had planned to make it a base to explore the end of the world....I am so glad that I made Ushuaia the longer base as it had so much more to offer......and it is the real stepping stone to Antarctica.....look at the images and make your own mind up......if you plan to ever come this far south, make it Ushuaia always. Yesterday I decided that because these were some of ... read more

Ok left this morning at 5.30 from El Calafate.....all went efficiantly and well with Always Glaciers....I just had to keep reminding them that I was staying in Chile and not going back to Argentina.....like everyone else........... Got through customs and immigration after the customary search for drugs, food etc......they wondered why I had left Chile 10 days ago and now returned........told them I loved it that much couldnt stay away! We then went into the National Park................it was awesome......took hundreds of images....then went trecking for a couple of hours....you have to be here to appreciate this ......Switzerland on steroids! Now the letdown.............Puerto Natales is a dump!....thats it, am glad am only staying here the ... read more

Its 1st December, and am in El Calafate This trip is just amazing......am here specifically for the Parc Nationale des Glaciares....... Back to yesterday morning which had me visiting the strangest place for me on a trip......a jail!!!!! It was considered one of the worst places anyone could be sent......all the worst murderers in Argentina were sent to Ushuaia.....they have kept it prety much as it was......it felt very chilling and jarring being there....anyway made for some contrasting images..... It was so cold and wintery.....this was coming on for their summer remember....that when I left the airport I wondered if the flight was going to leave. As I said El Calafate is about 1000kms north in Patagonia, so it seemed strange to see all this barren desert again....... Landed and transferred to a really nice hotel ... read more

Buonasera....its 11.30pm Ive just come in and its getting dark!!!!!!......... What a wonderfull day.......set off this morning on the well named Fin del Mundo with about nine other people sailing up the Beagle Channel. All started well as we paid our port fees, had our bags x rayed, and left Ushuaia harbour. We were headed towards the lighthouse at the end of the world......made famous in Jules Vernes novel....( but there is apparently a more southerly one ). I was chatting to the captain and told him that I had my sailing licence.......upon which he insisted that I take the wheel and head a course for the lighthouse.......shit!.....I couldnt even see the lighthouse.......so remembering nautical night classes I asked for the chart and present position then plotted the course, set the compass and was away......that was ... read more

Ushuaia.............made it!! Flew in this morning after two long flights firstly from Salta, then after quite a delay from Buenos Airies, on my new least popular airline......Aereolineas Argentinas.....I wont be joining their frequent flyer program. It all started very sedately yesterday when I had my last chorizo in San Lorenzo washed down by a Salta Negro....then on arrival at Salta airport informed that the flight was going to be 2 hours late........still had plenty of time for connection.....but the airport is so small that there was nothing to do.....no complimentary wifi either.....what is it with airports these days.......some provide it some dont.....they cant make that much money out of it...... When it did eventually arrive what a cattle truck......we were all squeezed in.....I saw no spare seats....which were the worse Ive sat in.....how old was this heap ... read more

Well Buongiorno, Its Friday morning and Im sitting on the porch of Casa Hernandez in San Lorenzo, Salta,.......ma che bella giornata!!!...... Lets go back a little........after what was a superb dinner in Cafayate we emerged at about midnight to find this fabulous little bodega open ......so after the briefest of deliberations we decided to join them.....more Malbec.....Music.....Merriment......Malbec.....Mus......you get the idea ( see images )...... Next morning bade the girls a fond farewell, and left them to their cycling, wine, dancing and the rest of their trip which ends in March next year...... The drive back to Salta was much easier as this was on an all tarmac road......however it was no less spectacular, and took me the best part of the day as I kept stopping for photographic opportunities......see images. This whole area is one place ... read more

Buongiorno, The brilliant thing about Argentina is that most people understand Italiano!!!! This morning I awake to find myself in the wine producing region of Argentina......and what wine!!!!! Back to yesterday......left Salta at 7am and headed west towards Cachi.....this was after a recommendation from my host Alex.....asked the girls if they wanted to accompany me, with some private photography tuition thrown in...how could they refuse!!!!.....so of we went into this stunning valley towards Cafayate. Once in the valley we were rewarded with some amazing condors swooping over the car and catching the thermals.....we stopped immediately and spent the next 1/2 hour watching these amazing birds. We then arrived in Cachi, which is a beautiful town amongst the mountains. Had breakfast in the town square and then invited by a teacher to see the local school where ... read more
