And so my South American adventure begins! To kick off, a fantastic weekend in London. After stumbling from the train under the weight of two backpacks (now aptly named Little and Large), I began in style with a trip to the Champagne Bar at St Pancras with the lovely Anna. Thanks to Mum and Dad, I knew "Little" was a not so little 8kg and "Large" a whopping 17kg. Mum had succeeded in winding me up earlier, announcing "Large" at 31kg and "Little" at 20kg. The fact I fell for this is testament to the level of panic I was in at the time, trying desperately to get some last minute bits and pieces tied up. Thankfully, some culling of items took place in London, saving both me and the bags (whose seams were stretched about ... read more

Thursday 4/4/13 – We rose early and were again stunned by the amount of mud in our bikes’ nooks and crevices. After a few more wipe downs from front to back, the bikes were clean enough and we left Peninsula Valdez northwards to Viedma, passing windy flat paddocks and sparse cattle for 500km. We again noticed that the passing landscapes of Patagonia are becoming slightly greener as we head north, however to me they are still no more interesting than observing the real-time drifting mass of a 1-kilogram platinum and iridium bar via atmospheric contamination. The highlight of the day was spotting a giant spider scurrying along the edge of the road. I’m not sure if it was a tarantula, but it certainly seemed big and hairy enough. It was surprisingly fast and camera shy, and ... read more

I think mister Google deserves a Nobel prize.... why, because without Google we would be simply lost in todays digitalized world. But of course there is a reason behind this crazy idea, I managed to delete all my pictures from the camera without downloading all of them. One search later and 40$ (I mean 39.90$, which makes it a great deal) lighter I got all my pics back. And yes, I can hear the IT geeks moaning, why did she pay… well the choice was a virus for free or to pay, also I was kind of in a hurry, since we are off to the beach for the weekend... I have added a few more pictures from our cycling tour which was great fun. Lots of love xxx P... read more

How to make Yorkshire Puddings: Take 2 good, well kept eggs. Add a pint of banter. Mix together. Put on a pre-planned flight to South America and cover in sun when ready. Well here we go, After an absolute ridiculous couple of leaving do's and parties and send off's were finally here, but only just. After 'The Match' and having more than a few bevvies round ours with the loved ones we were woken by me Mam at gone 12.45pm feeling like death and having to be at Donny train station in just under 2 and half hours and neither of us had yet to unpack our things from the barn party, never mind pack for our trip! We would have easily slept through 'til Monday if it wasn't for that wake up call so nice ... read more

Once again I have seen a new hotel and of course much more important a new city: Buenos Aires In a nutshell this was an exciting weekend with little sleep. We – a colleague from the bank and myself - left MVD Thursday morning with the ferry direction BA. As ferry trips go, it was an uneventful 3 hours long trip unlike our destination. Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina, and the second-largest metropolitan area in South America, after Greater São Paulo. BA has about 3 million inhabitants in the city and 13 million in the metropolitan area – in one word HUGE. But to be honest with you the center felt not as big and scary as I have expected it. Compared to London the subway called Subte is tiny but nevertheless was very ... read more

23rd March ’13 BA Today was slightly less walking thank God! We took the subway (turns out it’s a public holiday and it was free) to the station then a train to another station and then the tourist train to Tigre. This was quite a scenic ride and passed through lots of small stations where there were cafes on the platforms and one had an antiques fair going on and another a craft fair. We spent the journey sitting with a brother and sister from the UK who were backpacking for 4 weeks (staying in hostels etc) and were at the end of their trip and they raved about Bolivia and had done the overnight buses and were full of tales. He had also been to central america and said if you have travelled there then ... read more

21st March ’13 continued…. So eventually after hearing several thundery rumbles we decide we better set off for the bus station before it pours down, as it is a bit of a hike. We risked life and limb and dashed across the main road, bought tickets for the next bus and sat and waited. Once on the bus it did start to pour down but Spiderman was on the tele so that kept me entertained (only trouble is I will only get to see half of it…..how does it end?!) and we were given a sweet and a drink! Driving through the outskirts of Posadas there didn’t seem much to recommend itself about the place and the bus station wasn’t much better. It was tanking down so there was no point in trying to get out ... read more

I woke up after my late night adventure much earlier than I expected, and actually felt pretty good. My watch on the other hand appears to be dying a slow death. The screen went wonky for a while. It eventually came back, but I had to reset the time. I think it's just the battery going, but I don't think I can really rely on it to be my alarm for the rest of the trip. Early morning buses are going to be dicey... One thing that dawned on me is that I've been travelling for almost 48 hours and haven't met a single Australian... It's odd, but I don't expect that to last. I spent the morning looking into booking a flight to El Calafate to begin my trip working my way up from Patagonia, ... read more

Let the fun begin! Work has been crazy the last while, so I'm thrilled with the timing of this month off to explore Argentina! I have done very little planning at all for this trip. I've read some stuff, but I've booked nothing in advance (except the flight), and I packed the day of. So I'm mostly figuring it out as I go. Should be a good one! The first chance I had to start getting excited was at the check-in counter in Edmonton. Here we go, this is going to be good! I was looking forward to a month to do whatever I wanted.... I just needed a nap. I actually slept pretty decently on the plane, probably because I was so exhausted in the first place, and I had 20 hours to make it ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires February 15th 2013

We started our Argentina/Chile adventure in Buenos Aires on Feb 15th. After experiencing Chicago's beautiful snowy 25 degree weather, we were a tad shocked to be hit with the 90+ degree tempurature in BA. We spent our 2 days here walking around the city, enjoying the antique shops in the neighborhood of San Telmo, time worn mausoleums at the Recoleta cemetery (where all the rich BA folks throughout history spend eternity), and the wonderful Italian food (as vegetarians we needed to find a substitute for the mounds of steak the city offers). Overall BA was a typical "big city" and although fun for a day or two, we were excited to move on to other things... read more
