Friday 21 July - Bolivia to Argentina We were collected at 03.45 for our flight to Buenos Aires via Santa Cruz, we were surprised at the items not allowed in hold luggage such as laptops, cell phones etc. our guide told us that this was to avoid the staff on the X-ray machines from stealing them. We were really quite tired when we arrived at our hotel, The Brick Hotel. We had decided that we would like to go to Uruguay on our free day, Sunday. We left Keith organising tickets for the ferry journey with Belen the concierge while we went in search of a coffee shop. Buenos Aires is very much a cafe culture and we were keen to partake in this local custom, especially when we discovered that they served wine. We immersed ... read more

Welcome to Day-2 in Buenos Aires. We got up by 7:00 and stuffed the last of our loose items in the suitcases. The hanging items were indeed going to be moved by the stewards, so that was no problem for us. We left everything in our cabin, said goodbye to our Steward (Glenn) and headed up to the Horizon Court for breakfast. Since today is Ash Wednesday we had to be sure to avoid meat, but there were plenty of other things we could eat, and frankly we were not overly hungry yet after last night scrumptious dinner. This is the 3rd time we have done back-to-back cruises, but it is the first time we will move from one cabin to another. We had originally reserved this cabin for both cruises, however back in January we ... read more

Hello from Buenos Aires. This is an early report (just the first half of the day) because we have evening activities which will prevent us from posting later tonight, so here’s what we did. We got up this morning about 6:30 because we have an 8:15 meeting time for our excursion today. We got what has become our usual excursion-day breakfast – tea & juice from the Horizon Court and breakfast biscuits with donuts. Janet says they are better than Egg McMuffins but the chocolate donuts are not as good as Chocolate Long Johns at home. But we got ourselves down to the lounge about 8:00. We got off the ship and the bus left promptly at 9:00. We drove through Buenos Aires city and into Buenos Aires province, heading for a place called Tegre. The ... read more

6/1/2017 After having only two hours sleep from the previous night, Scarlet and I still made it down for breakfast in the morning. We had booked in to go on a walking tour around La Boca which is an area that is known for its colourful buildings, football scene and also violence/dangerousness. We were waiting around for the tour to go for a while and 30 of us got a public bus. With so many on the bus, little sleep and a slight hangovjer it wasn't that enjoyable! Once we got to La Boca it was all worth it. The buildings, graffiti and atmosphere were amazing! Everything was so colourful and bright. The only thing that let us down on the tour was the tour guide. Although he was so sweet and cute, his English wasn't ... read more

Hola chicos! (as they seem to say around here...) We write on a lazy Sunday afternoon looking out across the snow-capped Andes from our hostel in El Calafate, on our last full day in Argentina. We are in great spirits, particularly on hearing about Wednesday's big win at Huddersfield earlier this afternoon. We arrived here last Tuesday, following an hour long ferry to Buenos Aires from Uruguay. With more than 14 million inhabitants, 'BA' is the second most populous city in South America after São Paulo, and Lonely Planet's take on it as "cosmopolitan, seductive, emotional, frustrating and chock-full of attitude" is probably a fair summary of the place and its people. The traffic alone makes central London look serene - one of the main thoroughfares has 18 lanes! Conversely, our itinerary here was leisurely and ... read more

Buenos Aires, 5 Sept through 12 Sept, 2016 The weather during our first week in Buenos Aires was definitely wintery, cold and wet, however at the beginning of our second week the clouds and rain go away and the sun comes out. It's wonderful how the weather affects the mood of these two travelers and of course the Buenos Aires natives. Yes, our second week in Argentina and after attending 7, 2 hour Spanish lessons, the decision is made to finish. I in particular, have gone about as far as I can go in a classroom environment. Our female teacher was nuerotic and was just a little too intense. I think she was happy we have decided to call it a day, and immediately we cancel a smile comes onto her face. I for one, needed ... read more

Another adventure with my friend Malcolm, this time we are going to South America and spending two months in Argentina and Brazil. Unfortunately, Malcolm arrived in New Zealand carrying a flu bug and even after being bed ridden for several days the bug is with us as we set off for Buenos Aires. Oh, those poor passengers on the airplane! Buenos Aires is often referred as the Paris of South America, I will be interested to see if it lives up to its label. This weeks blog will be in diary form: Sunday, 28/08, 2016 The flight to BA is long and uneventful, just the way I like a flight to be. On arrival, the two of us breeze through customs, find our luggage and proceed to our taxi. It's Sunday at 5.00pm and the drive ... read more

My final days here in Argentina's capitol were spent helping my friend Mariano in his lab at Center for Toxicology. His Tekmar 3000 Concentrator was giving him fits and I was happy to lend him a hand. He was also generous enough to kick me a little scratch (of which I was unsuccessful in my attempts to refuse). Working in the lab and being around the equipment that has been much of my life the past twelve years brought unexpected emotions of homesickness, and believe it or not missing work as well. It was nice to be doing work related things again. It was nice to feel useful, and to have a sense of purpose. I was able to isolate the problem in the concentrator to a massive leak in the purge flow regulator. Once I ... read more
