Another day, another bus. This time it was a 17 hour overnight to Buenos Aires. After a surprisingly good nights sleep we arrived in Buenos Aires around midday bright eyed and bush tailed; that didn't last for long. With 40 degree heat and nowhere to stay, it wasn't long before we were wandering around the streets of Palermo in dire need of a place to cool down. Not too much later we decided to splash out and treat ourselves to a hotel...well kinda, it was pretty basic and cheaper than most hostels! Once settled in, we took a wander around the immediate area, had a bite to eat then headed back for an early night. After treating ourselves to a monster lay in (8:30am), we were up for a quick brekkie and out the door. First ... read more

BEDS 'R BURNING IN BUENOS AIRES. The 6th wealthiest country in the World in the 1950s...inflation in the hundreds of percents 1998-2002...now I understand the song 'Cry for me Argentina'...this land of past glories. Yet a land filled with present glories...evidenced by its past, its present, its people...its stunning landscapes. A week in B.A before Patagonia...no way you're staying in a hotel they said...you'd offend the family...so we stayed in Adrogue in the North of B.A...the home of Martin & Mercedes...gracious hosts. Mercedes 9 months pregnant...ready to pop any moment...gave us their young daughter's room...our Aussie mate & his Argentinian partner in separate lodgings out the front. Part of their extended family for a month...extraordinary generosity afforded to us...pretty well parties every night...but like life...plenty of curve balls. ... read more

Dear Ada and Valentyn, thank you for introducing us to the world of tango !

Es folgt mir ganz gut, ... read more

Ungefaehr ... read more

So the summer is starting here in Argentina. The weather has been hotting up and as there was a bank holiday Monday, with the long weekend people were out and about and it was really starting to feel a lot like summer! Spent the Saturday by the river, we went to a place called Peru Beach, which is in San Isidro, about an hours drive from the city centre (because of the traffic, not because of the distance!). It was about 32 degrees again on Saturday, so I was thankful for the breeze coming off the river. This is a really nice part of the city, and it has a really chilled surfer kind of vibe. It is forbidden to swim in the water - unfortunately, I wanted nothing more than to strip off and dive ... read more

Last weekend I experienced one of the most quintessentially Argentinian events of the year - the Argentine Polo Open Championship which is held each year in the Palermo area of Buenos Aires. Polo in Argentina is recognised world wide and the Argentinians have apparently not lost a world championship in polo since 1949. They are the best in the world at it, which I guess comes as no surprise since the symbol of the horse is so unanimous with Argentina. Horse racing, polo and the national sport of 'pato' are all widely popular, not to mention the importance of the 'gauchos' in Argentinian identity. It was my first time in Palermo and I have to say I really loved the place, it is very beautiful and again reminiscent of Paris with it's intricate and decadent architecture. ... read more

This has got to be one of the most beautiful cities we have ever seen. Arrived at 10.30 and spent afternoon on a city tour as we only have 20 hrs here and intend to make the most of it! The jaquarandi is is in full bloom and the sun is shining. 28 degs. It is known as the Paris of the South and for good reason. Huge wide leafy avenues and parks and statues everywhere. Saw Evita's tomb in Recoleta. She's getting a bit high now though. Going to a restaurant for famed Argie steak and Tango show shortly. Get 3 hrs kip then leave at 5am for flight to Peru. Makes up for poor start to trip though would have liked a bit longer here. Hasta manyana!... read more

Hi everybody! Ok so my first blog entry from Buenos Aires. I arrived here yesterday at about 11am local time, after having spent around 28 hours in transit! Was a long journey - we left my house in Dublin at 7am on Friday morning and flew to London, then a 8 hour flight to JFK and from there the 10 hour leg to Buenos Aires. I couldn't get over the size of the plane, the first time I went to the States it was just a regular Boeing 737 but this time both of the international flights were huge big planes. I was worried as I heard bad things about American Airlines, but both flights were grand. We had lots of food and films/TV series etc to entertain us. The flight out of New York on ... read more

We only had a few days in Buenos Aries, we had a tour guide. It was so good to be able to go to the hotel and drink the water after the last two places we were. BA is a very impressive and grand city, that is alive with colourful culture and something happening everywhere. On the first night we were there we had a dinner at a fine restaurant then we saw a tango show, it wasn’t really my cup of tea, but when in Rome… The following day our guide took us on a tour, we were taken to the magnificent Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Luján, where Jorge Mario Bergoglio who would become Pope Francis used to celebrate Mass. Following this we retuned to the city, to the main sq where their parliament, ... read more
