So with my new and smoothly running chain I left Osorno, had I paid more attention to the GPS I would have avoided a detour but then again I did go for the ride. Back on track going up back to the border, towards Argie and Bariloche, I passed every vehicle that I could, which was all of them, first in line is better than being the last. The same sour puss that had let me out of Argie let me in, they should send them all on a smile education. Having had the "fill up you tank when ever possible" idea firmly cemented in my mind got me into the petrol station in Villa Angostura the first village after the border. There's an Argie bloke with a bike waiting in the ever present queues as ... read more

Sunday in Osorno is a bore so we went to Puerto Montt, and after 10 km on the highway that was enough back roads towards the volcano called Osorno. It was a lovely day with clearish skies and the volcano grew in front of us, sort of Fuji a very nice snow capped cone and looking like a text book illustration of a volcano. I do not know it it was the same that spewed ashes all over the pass over to Chile. Anyway it was a nice run into Montt with a strong wind coming of the lake, people camping down by the lake and swimming in that cold water, well the Swedes rather live with cold water as well, not me less than 30 C I do not even dip my toes. The bay ... read more

So , we went a bought pickled cucumbers, cheese, olives, peanuts and crisps in the super market and we did not forget the beer ,nice snacks in El Bolson. The other people in the hostel admired our style. The suare in El Bolson was crowded with wannabe hippies with dreads and tats trying to sell handicrafts to the tourists. The guy who ran the hostel said ”que alegria” about every 2 minutes or , no matter what. One thing can be said about Joy’s hostel and that is that it’s noisy. Being only two in the group as Alejandro wanted to hustle to Bariloche made the morning start up shorter, at 7.30 we were on our away on a nice road between the mountains going back into Chile again, The BMW guys wanted serve which can be had ... read more

Believe everything you've heard about Buenos Aires and then double it. For me, Buenos Aires is the crown of South America. Some will feel I am being biased, since my husband was born and bred here, but I'm not and I invite those sceptics to go and see for themselves. I am a city girl, who has lived in London for 9 years before embarking on our trip to South America, and Buenos Aires is undoubtedly one of the greatest cities on earth. I was fortunate to see this great city through the eyes of a naïve tourist and through the eyes of a resident. I saw the good, the bad and the ugly. I see Buenos Aires as a mix between Paris and Barcelona (without the beach front location). The architecture is truly stunning and ... read more

We all arrived safely to our homes. All are wonderful, gracious people. Last night we attended the Rotary meeting of General Rodriquez Rotary club. They have a dedicated building with a kitchen and a barbecue grill to do Asado. We had Roasted pork, blood sausage and another type of sausage for dinner. They raise awareness of Polio by holding a marathon. FUN! Today we are at El Rancho, a farm with cows and pigs. But the best part of the day is the SUN ! Yes it is shining. Rotary Friendship Exchange is all about making friends and acquaintances in another country. This team is doing this task very well.... read more

I thought it appropriate to dedicate a separate piece to this as even before my time here is done I can say that it has been one of the best experiences of my life, the people and mooments I have had will be unmeasurable in time to come. Though I am writing this at the end of my second last week, I will likely not publish until I am done here incase anything new happens which I may wish to share. After extensive research, I settled on the organisation called Life. In Spanish it stands for Luchamos por una Infancia Feliz y con Esperanza, translated it means Fighting for a Happy Childhood and one with Hope. Over here volunteering must be a big business, as most of the organisations wanted to charge relatively large fees, considering ... read more

Cant quite beleive it has been over 2 weeks since I last wrote! Apologies for this. Partly due to being lazy and partly due t being busy and caught up in the moment. Those close to me have known I am alive and well though so not quite vanished off the face of the planet. After over a month of living in hostels it has been amazing to have our own flat. We are situated centrally in a new apartment build on the 3rd floor in a studio style flat. It has the standard cooking area, living area with TV etc, then bed with drawers and so on. We also have a balcony with BBQ overlooking a large garden, and the building itself is host to a solarium and swimming pool. For the first week whenever ... read more

Well, its my first week in Buenos Aires and I already love it here. It’s a city which feels a lot like home, and the cooler weather is a really nice change from hot and humid Brazil. The homestay where I am staying is gorgeous. It’s an old colonial style house and I’ve been given my host mother’s son’s bedroom (sorry mate) until two English girls using the spare room leave next week. I have a private bathroom (complete with claw foot bath) and there is a floor-to-ceiling bookcase in the room. It is really is lovely here, think high ceilings, polished floor boards, a large desk I can study on and double doors opening onto the courtyard outside. My host, Maria lives here with her two children (a girl, 11 and a boy, 15). She ... read more

I can not put my finger on it but there is something that resonates deeply within me and Buenos Aires! Stepping off the seacat ferry i instantly fell in love with this place. Equipped with my lonely planet book this time and my hostel address i proceeded to the nearby bus terminal to enquire on which bus would be most appropriate....to my amazement 5 bus drivers on their break willingly assisted to identify the most appropriate bus route and since i did not have the relevant change they even let me ride for FREE! The streets are wide and well lit during the night, so it feels safe to walk around on your own. I am so looking forward to exploring this city. Over the coming days that is exactly what I did....walked as much as ... read more

I should point out that other than some major bruising to my nose and upper lip and in various parts of my body (arms and back side) I am FINE and have survived one of the most traumatic experiences of my life to date!!! Well some days it is better not getting out of bed....today was obviously one of those. In my attempt to move between hostels several blocks apart, I had my first taster of the regular con....which I quickly brushed off as a one off from which I got away with a story and no financial or physical loss. The con goes like this - 3 people (1 woman and 2 guys all with day packs on their backs) tried to steel my backpack....their ploy was to throw some putrite brown liquid onto my ... read more
