Back in B.A and Nico gives me my birthday presents. He says that the custom in B.A is to give second hand books as gifts -for they tell two stories -the story in the book and the story of its owners. He has bought me a Spanish English dictionary (subtle hint!;) a theatre programme with a beautiful art deco design from their opera house Teatro Colon and also a little tango story with some beautiful illustrated postcards. He has also written me a letter and then we just spend hours in bed. “ When I stroke your skin my hand is like a scanner trying to remember every part of you...” We go to the Japanese Gardens which are part of the Jardins Botanicals. For some reason they are packed-so although beautiful it doesn't feel particularly ... read more

“I’m smart enough to know when to be Yankee, and when to be Canadian, eh!” So said the bleach-blonde bombshell in her seventies; fixing the bat winged, 50’s spectacles with one hand, fixing the wad of foreign notes stashed in her bra with the other... It’s the eccentrics that give the best advice, though you often fail to realise it at the time. It was this pearl that came to mind whilst crossing the Paraguayan border into Argentina recently, as we, two British travellers, passed beneath the banners reading “MALVINAS!”; the islands better known to the English as the Falklands... Though we might miss the odd headline from time to time; despite the fact that we may not know a single song in the UK top ten; regardless of being completely unaware of (further, completely uninterested ... read more

Monday morning is a public holiday and Mattias wakes me up for a traditional Porteno breakfastof crackers with soft white cheese and jam. Then we go to MALBA – the Museum of Modern Latin American Art. The building is a beautiful, elegantly cool and light filled space. Unlike the Tate Modern or its equivalents around the world the exhibitions and floors are easily do-able in a couple of hours which makes it just the right size for my limited attention span. There is an exhibiton on – bye bye american pie – showcasing photography and artists from the Warhol era as well as some of South America's most famous artists. He introduces me to Antonio Berni – an artist that has created a reoccuring character in his work – Juanita Laguan - a young man that ... read more

Estava calor em ba (buenos aires ... read more

A beautiful wilderness area of Patagonia and home for the next four days was a dome in an ecocamp. All power from water and sun, everything recycled and all human waste composted - eco poos as they came to be known. Each dome was quite luxurious with very large comfortable bed, wood burning stove, bathroom and balcony overlooking the Torres ( four granite towers formed millions of years ago. Unfortunately a large part of the National Park was destroyed by bush fires but still plenty for us to see. We did three hikes, one up a vertical slope with no marked path ( no exaggeration!), one a recovery 5 mile nature safari and finally an eleven mile fairly mountainous hike, just to prove we could still do it. (Suzanne was sharing her paracetamol with a charming ... read more

So, I ended my adventures in Argentina in Buenos Aires. I took an overnight bus from Salta to Buenos Aires, and stayed in a hostel in the Congreso area. Sadly my travel companion departed for England, but I carried on discovering this amazing city solo. I don't quite know how to express my love for Buenos Aires. For me, it was an amazing experience for many reasons. I was very happy there, and got to know the city, because I was there for two weeks. It is somewhere I could definitely live, and always springs to mind when others ask me about my travels and places I love! I spent two weeks in Buenos Aires attending a Spanish school Monday to Friday from 9am - 1pm (VOS school, http://www.vosbuenosaires.com/en/). My class was small, maximum four students ... read more

We arrived in Buenos Aires after a fourteen and half hour bus trip feeling refreshed - the first time that had ever happened on an overnight bus trip! It almost warranted the cost of the ticket…. A taxi took us from the bus station to our hostel (which the driver had trouble finding due to odd street numbering) but after settling into the very comfortable, friendly Chill House we walked to the nearby bus stop and caught a bus into the down town area. We spent a while wandering Plaza De Mayo, the large square and political centre of the city. As with many of these plazas in South America it was lined with signs and banners of protest against a current issue. One side of the plaza fronted Government House or Casa Rosado ( Pink ... read more

Our location at Los Ejercitos lies under the shadow of an abandoned hospital, the project aborted midway through construction. I am certain that the architect knew that it was doomed from the start, and so decided to entertain all of his structural fantasies with a free reign, as a child sits down determined to draw the biggest skyscraper in the world. It is sickeningly big; black cavernous holes, once intended to be ward windows, pepper the entire twenty stories like paralysed, unblinking eyes. It is without question the most terrifying building I have ever seen. Nowhere else does the abortion of hope stand so tall and disfigured, a mocking reminder to be endured every day. Underneath the children mark out a rudimentary football pitch, complete with posts composed of dogshit. With curious regularity, I have found ... read more

Buenos Aires is, quite rightly, known as the Paris of the South. Such a beautiful city, full of beef and wine! There are many 19th and early 20th century buildings and wide boulevards with a definite French air. We have an apartment overlooking Plaza San Martin, right next to Retiro station which means we can jump onto the subway easily. The smarter art and residential areas of Recoletta and Palermo have spread to the north and are not served on the subway so we have walked miles - best way to know a city! Portenos, as residents of BA are called, are on the whole, very friendly and helpful - when looking discretely at a map, one has to assure quite a few folks that we are indeed ok! The 19th century parks are a joy ... read more

So where were we...... After my last email we went to the famous Recoleta cemetry right accross from where we are staying. It only took us three days but its always the way isn´t it? Definitely different to our cemetries at home. EEEeeeekkkk! You can actually see the coffins inside the big stone coffin houses, with white cloths and vases and crosses and other religous things. It´s most famous for being where Eva Peron is buried so we went for a squiz at her grave which was just like all of the rest of them really, but with more flowers. I think I might read her autobiography when I finish my current book, sounds like an amazing story! Then last night we hit uptown for a real proper Tango show. It was called Sabor a Tango ... read more
