..... and you say that they way you say ah... venice! Just to fill you in. Well, after a couple of somewhat hellish days, I arrived in the cultural capital of South America. Or so they said... but you know what? I got here, and sure enough... these people aren´t fucking around. There are galleries every 20 ft, statues, plazas with trees in bloom in deep purple, old churches, modern museums, adorable cafes, walkways covered in trelised vines that are just now blooming in fuschia flowers, cobblestone, a nice breeze... and well... anything else you might think could be in a perfect city. The siestia is serious business around here. Everything closes at about 1, and then nothing is open again until about 8, except... for ice cream parlors... of which there is one on every ... read more

Alta Garcia is a distant and small suburb of Cordoba that has the odd distinction of being the childhood home of ¨Che" (go look it up if you dont´know, silly), and of Falla, who I learned was a very distinguished turn-of-the-century-composer, originally from Spain. So I went out there to see it. Mostly, I found I was enchanted by the small and happy town. A river ran through the center and most of the town was down there at three in the afternoon sitting in the shade and standing in the river. The quite tree lined streets reminded me of any north american settled and old suburb. I noticed that one of the reasons this comparison was so striking was that lilacs were growing along the roads. I love that smell! Unlike the midwest, you can ... read more

CORDOBA Cordoba er Argentinas næststørste by.

Got up the same sort of time and headed out on our second ride. I had the same horse as yesterday but she must have eaten well overnight as she was less interested in the taste of my trousers today. We were heading for a place called the Top of the World, the highest point on the 6,000 acre ranch. We got to the point where we had to start a steep incline, and Chantal as the least confident there decided not to do it. She had a bigger horse than me so we swapped, which seemed like a good idea. Except her horse was the slowest horse in the world and no matter what I did she wouldn't break into a trot. Still, could have been worse - Lynette managed to almost kill her horse. ... read more

Woke up and had eggy bread - the only decent breakfast I've had since leaving home. At around 10, Hume, the ranch manager, arrived with the horses we were to be riding today. He showed me to my trusty steed and I got on. At which point he pissed himself laughing as my feet were pretty much touching the floor. He swapped me over onto a different horse which was better but she did have a tendency to keep biting my ankle every time I kicked her to make her move. We set off on the ride which was fairly uneventful once I'd got over my fear. Some of the terrain was pretty rough and I was surprised the horse could manage it with me on it. I'm not sure I could have done so if ... read more

Cordoba!!!What's to say about Cordoba? Not much. It is the second industrial center of Argentina, but retains many of its historical buildings dating from the colonial era. El Centro (Spanish for "downtown") is the most important commercial area, with clothes, food, hardware, fishing equipment, shoes, computer shops, etc., but also most surprisingly, this city has the biggest concentration of "hotels by the hour". These are hourly rate hotels where people take their secret lovers for a romp in the good old proverbial hay. they vary from cheap establishments to the deluxe option with wall-to-wall mirrors, jaccuzis.... Use your imagination! these deluxe versions are a part of under the table Argentine culture that is very well disguised. Anyway, we didn´t get to experience these "love by the hour hotels" ( prices way out of a backpackers budget ... read more

Woke up this morning and still a bit drunk from last night decided to take Billy's tent down while he was still in it. Big mistake - he threw the biggest strop since I was forced to go see Armageddon at the cinema a few years back. We packed up and headed to the local Wal Mart to stock up on supplies - we were to be spending the next 3 nights on a ranch in the middle of nowhere, so plenty of booze was essential. Chantal (the token Australian in the group) was alarmingly excited by the prospect of going to a supermarket and took tons of photos of it. We got the the Estancia at around lunchtime after taking the van up some not very safe looking mountain roads, where we were greeted by ... read more

Left Buenos Aires early on the 19th and it's the first place I've been sorry to leave. I think it's the kind of city I could easily spend a week or two in just people watching and taking in the nightlife. The drive to Cordoba, Argentina's second city, took pretty much all day, which wasn´t helped by the minging hangover I had. The campsite was also pretty basic but someone had thought to leave us a very nice present in one of the toilets which was quite pleasant. The next day we headed into the city itself to buy some essentials; food, drink and a new pair of trainers. The city was pretty dull to be honest so we didn't hang about too long. On the way back however, the taxi we were in pulled down ... read more

The meat is cooking (very slowly) and the night is young (12.00am). Enjoying a rooftop 'asado' before hitting the town. Warming up with a 1 litre cup of Argentinian ale ('Quilmes') The Beginning of the End! No turning back! It's all down hill from here! The dodgy Argentinian pop music starts to sound good! We're even meeting some locals...whoever they might be!... read more
