We´ve spent the last two weeks in La Cumbre - Jamie has been doing his paragliding course, and while at first I was interested, as soon as I saw the big drop and thought about jumping off all by myself, I realised that maybe this was a special activity just for Jay and I would be much better suited for laying around the pool and taking nice walks in the countryside. And it turns out that La Cumbre has a lot to offer the non-paraglider. Behind the town, there is a lovely walk up to the statue of Christo the Redentor. You can sit up there and look out on the town below, and right out to the hills. Behind the statue, there is a walk to a small lake/reservoir. Jamie and I took a walk ... read more

A violent gust of wind catches my canopy and I struggle to keep it on the ground. Nervously I look over my shoulder at the drop below - it's a long way down. Will I even be able to reach the landing field 2km away with such a strong head wind? I try to relax and run through the launch in my mind. There's so much to remember! I have waited for 8 hours in the baking sun for this moment. The sun will be setting soon - this will be my one and only chance to fly today. I feel the wind on my back ease off slightly and look over at my instructor in expectation. He pauses for a moment and then nods, "Now Jamie!". A quick step back and a gentle pull on ... read more

South America » Argentina » Córdoba » Villa General Belgrano November 14th 2007

The trip from Cordoba to Villa General Belgrano was great. 90 minutes of going up and down hills, round bends, past lakes etc. Very scenic. For a small town VGB is pretty spread out, really felt like we were a long way from city life. It can be quite a loing walk to get to where you are staying - in our case the Hotel Bremen. Walked there past the bierkellers, the shops selling Graf Spee memorabilia and kuchen and the apline sstyle houses. In case you don´t know the town was founded by German emigrants and in 1944 a couple of hundred of the survivors from the ship were relocated here. Found out that there is a festival in town this weekend. Tried some of the beer from the local brewery, Viejo Munich, excellent before ... read more

I think we could easily have spent our entire trip exploring North-West Argentina, as it's a beautiful region, the weather is perfect - well a little too hot, perhaps - and there is plenty to see and do, much more than we had initially expected. We had originally planned two weeks in the north west, but that quickly became three, and would easily have become four had we not taken the decision to move on. Tucumán: Where the siesta should be obligatory San Migual de Tucumán (or Tucumán as practically every one calls it) is the largest city in the northwest but we spent less time here than in any other place we visited, with only 12 hours between our arrival from Tafi del Valle on the bus and and our departure on an overnight bus ... read more

After coming down from Northwest Argentina we spent a few days in the centre of the country. We spent 2 days in Cordoba, Argentina´s second largest city, and to be honest it was enough time for us. I think we are developing an understanding of our likes and dislikes more as this trip goes on. We seem to find that big cities drain us and we cannot concentrate for too long on them! Having said that, Cordoba is a nice city and certainly has some pleasant sites. We enjoyed visiting the Musee des Bellas Artes (some of these Argentines certainly know how to paint) as well as some of the local Jesuit sites (Cordoba was an important city for the Jesuits, founded by them in 1573). Just 2 hours from Cordoba, however, we found our true ... read more

First of all, Happy Halloween! This is my favorite holiday of all. I dont´know why, I just like it. Party on. Well, it rained today. It would have been a good day to leave, except I couldn´t get my ass out of bed because on acount of my extreme tiredness. And I had extreme tiredness because some guy in my dorn coughed all night, ALL NIGHT, and I couldn´t sleep, so I couldn´t get up. Oh well. My bus tommorw leaves at 11 pm for an over nighter (I always take overnighters, that way I save money, becasue I don´t have to pay for a hostle that night), and then I´ll be in San Juan. I´m not in the best of moods today,´but a few things brighted my path. There is nothing like the fosslized skeleton ... read more

Tomorrow is my last day in Cordoba, and then the next morning I´ll be moving on. Actually, I feel like I´m ready to be done with this place now... but one more day of relaxation will be good for me. Yesterday I didn´t do much, and on mondays, most things are closed, so there wasn´t much to do. Mostly, I switched hostels. The first I was in was recommended Lonely Planet, but these tend to be a little expensive, plus I think they raise their prices after they get mention in "the backpackers bible". I found an ad for a different one "El refugio" and I like it much better. A problem with some of the backpacking scene is that a lot of kids come down here to not do anything but party and get laid. ... read more

Well, I've been in Argentina for three months and I'm starting to feel very comfortable in my new crib. This edition of the blog will deal with making "native" friends. (there has got to be a better term) Fortunately, before I arrived I already had an Ecuadorian friend who lives here in Córdoba. Through this friend i soon made many non-English speaking Córdoban friends. Luckily, it was through these friends that I originally discovered the Argentine tendency for males to also take part in the latin kissing of the cheeks. I've always been much more personal than the average more formal, less touchy American, but even I originally was surprised. So, although these friends of mine are as busy as their American youth counterparts we have found some occasions to enjoy each other's company. For example, ... read more

La città è carina ma non di certo la migliore, il centro, tutto pedonale, sembra un grande centro commerciale all'aperto, ci sono però una serie di begli edifici, soprattutto in stile coloniale, che la riscattano.... read more
