It's a strange little fact that not that many people know about, not even most Welsh people, but deeply tucked away in south America there are small Welsh colonies in the Patagonia region of Argentina, nestled away off the usual beaten gringo-trail. Being from Wales and travelling south America anyway I decided to pay them a visit for a few days. And here´s the brief story... The first band of Welshmen and women arrived in Puerto Madryn in the year of our lord 1865, on a ship called Mimosa that set sail from Liverpool docks a few months earlier with the hopes and aspirations of 153 Welshmen and women on board. The long and the short of it is is that they left Wales because they thought the Welsh language, culture and tradition was being ... read more

Early start to catch the plane (yes, I know, the 4th in almost as many days, but I didn´t fly anywhere yesterday), and the sun has come out to say farewell. Stunning blue sky, with just a few clouds clinging onto the mountains. No first class ticket this time, just regular economy - never be the same again. Fortunately it´s only a 30 min flight, to Rio Gallago, home to the current Argentinian president. This is where we enter into Patagonia proper. Vast open spaces, with absolutely nothing as far as the eye can see. The Andes way over in the West remove any moisture from the air, and only break the wind for a short time, so the wind blows across the empty space, drying the land, no trees able to grow and provide shelter. ... read more

We promise we won´t only update this with stories of animals - no matter how cute they are, but we have to just mention a few more first! We actually missed a huge colony of animals off the journal last time and that was the elephant seals we saw in Punta Norte, with many many pups body popping their way along the beach! Anyway, following that, we visited a place called Punta Tombo - the place that was the main reason we stayed at Puerto Madryn, and probably even Argentina! Here is the biggest colony of Magellanic Penguins in the world with over 1.5 million of the little beauties running around! The area they live at for 5 months of the year is about 200 hectares, which sounds huge, but you can´t walk 3 steps without ... read more

Hi there to all at home and on the road. Since the last entry Diana and I spent New Year on a small island south of Rio called Isle Grande. Were only going to spend a week there but it was so lovely that ended up 18 night there and then discovered our 60 day visas were due to expire so we hot footed it to Sao Paulo via a quaint seaside town called Parati were there was great music and the best Thai resturant ever. Spent 4 days in Sao Paulo ( the third largest city in the world, 26mill people).then a 6hr bus ride to Curatiba where we had a 4hr train ride thru native Atlantic forest. The last of the kind left in Brasil or Sth America for that matter. The Falls at ... read more

January 31st, 2006, evening after Port Madryn penguin colony at Punta Tombo. Day 26 of our cruise of 105, 79 to go. Arrived in port at 8 am, boarded the bus at 8:30 for a total drive time of 4 hours each way, painful, flat dirt road and scrub brush only. We saw only 2 small town, 2 farms and one gas station in all that time. The ground is very dry as the western Pacific moisture does not come over the Andes. Penguin colony was a treat, they just walk all over from their burrows to the ocean and back, while the humans are contained inside fencing. Dads, moms, juveniles and babies are all over the place, apparently 1 000 000 of them. 42 degrees of latitude south, 64 degrees of longitude w 18 degrees ... read more

Have now got 7 days of riding under my belt and am now sitting in a funky internet cafe in the town of Rio Gallegos in Argentina. Rode through Tierra del Fuego listening to Eddie Izzard and Johnny Cash. Not an obvious pairing but they make interesting earfellows. I have been impressed by how extremely friendly and helpful everyone is despite the fact that my Spanish is really pretty abysmal. My approach to communication is to smile a lot, point, eat anything and say ok. It seems to work reasonably well. I don´t think I have massively offended anyone or done anything illegal yet. The highlight so far has been staying a night on a sheep farm in the Chilean part of Tierra del Fuego. I had hoped to camp in a place called Cullen. However ... read more

Hello After a good bus journey (with bad films) we arrived in Puerto Madryn, put our tent up and headed off on a bike to find some sealions. Noone told us that it was 100% gravel and sand and would be like near on impossible to move! But we managed to go 17kms there and 17kms back! but when we got there the ranger told us the bad news.... there ís only 1 sealion and hes asleep, the rest are out at sea eating. Puerto Madryn is a lovely seaside town, its the Welsh settlement in Argentina. Its windy like Wales and smells very seaweedy (also like Wales). It has roads named Gwenyth and Davis etc, but its not Wales.. theres no rock! We met a lovely couple from France and went off on an adventure ... read more

Even though it was a last minute decision and I knew nothing of the trekking involved, the tour I embarqued on went very well with the 32 truck passangers all getting along. We left the Tierra del Fuego on the 16th of January making our 1st leg of our 16 days trip together accross Patagonia. We left behind the ghosts of the Selk'nam, who, can't you believe it, in their days, had a vocabulary larger then our English (!!!). Isn't complex language a sign an advanced civilization? Did the natives of the mountains of Torres del Paine go 'Waow' like me everytime they looked up? Did they camp where our tour truck took us, and washed in its cold blue lake? (We had welcomed hot showers at our already set campsite). They must have fished trouts ... read more
