The bus took 17 hours mas o menos (more or less) from Bs.As. Martha and I crashed hard (this being the day after the 8 am night out). This first stop in Patagonia for us was on the Atlantic coast. It’s a dry, empty land- like Cabo in Mexico but without mountains. The wind blows almost constantly. It’s not terribly hot. On the beach in P. Madryn hordes of Argentinians cope with the wind. They are ordinary looking- many are overweight just like in the US, but all had their mate paraphernalia (see below). It's a young crowd- teenagers and families. There was not much in P. Madryn to hold our interest, but P. Piramides, in the national park on Peninsula Valdes, enchanted us. It was one of those almost perfect beaches… had a tiny community ... read more

Bit of a backtrack as I don't think I did the glacier justice. I still can't believe that it is moving!...like a river in really slo-mo...(and why abbreviate a word like slo-mo?) and the middle runs (?) a bit faster than the sides, and the face we see probably fell as snow about a million years ago!!.....and the snap, crackle and pop is exactly like a hugely amplified version of pouring your single malt over frsh ice...(I had a girlfriend once, she never believed in, or understood 'fresh' ice!) I saw another (little) glacier today on a tour of the lake out of Esquel, and saw some shaky looking rare and really old trees!..but also met some nice people, good to do a toury thing and give the bike a day off just for a change! ... read more

The past couple of days have been spent in Puerto Madryn. On the outskirts of Peninsula Valdez this town was originally settled by Welsh immigrants last century. My brief experience in Buenas Aires was brief, to say the least. arriving off the plane i proceeded to get lost in the airport looking for immigration. fortunately i was not the only person, so it didn't look bad for me. At the airport, the customs officials waved me through without any looking or inspection of my baggage (nor stamp on the passport). i just dropped my card off and left. hopefully this will not come back to bite me in the ass when i try to leave the country. I then went to the areoparque de Jorge Newbury (the domestic airport) where it was a zoo. In Pto. ... read more

Some things can never be forgiven. Never. When it comes to the issue of the many deaths that occured during the Malvenas conflagration, whilst I have no historical knowledge to draw on I am quite prepared to persuade myself that the wonderfully moral and righteous British Democracy is at least as culpable as the murderous dictatorship that ruled Argentina at the time. Johnny Foreigner invading our turf can, after time, be passed over, at least by those who didn´t suffer directly or indirectly at the time. However, Maradona´s outrageous cheating that led to England´s exit from the 1986 World Cup and to that same Maradona eventually lifting the trophy and placing it triumphally to his undeserving lips must live forever in infamy. Don´t tell me that England players have cheated in many ways over the years. ... read more

Most of our travelling around Argentina so far has been by bus. They aren´t really any long distance trains here, but we´d read about an overnight train journey that crossed from East to West Argentina through Patagonia. Sounded good. So for over a week we tried to book tickets online, went into numerous travel agencies in different cities, all without success. Then the guy who sorted our flights out from Mendoza (Saint Francisco) also finally sorted out our tickets for this train (took 3 hours: 4 phonecalls, 2 emails, 2 faxes & a trip to the bank to transfer money). It was worth all the bother. We had a great time, feeling like Michael Palin chugging at about 20 miles an hour through unpopulated desert and scrubland for hours and hours and hours, drinking beer and ... read more

San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina Visited November 24 and 25, 2005 To see this page with pictures and proper formatting, please visit: http://www.fmschmitt.com/travels/2005SouthAmerica/bariloche/bariloche.html All of our travel pictures and commentary are accessible at: http://www.fmschmitt.com/travels.htm After two days of cold and overcast weather, the bright sun greeted us on our last morning in Bariloche with this sparkling view of lake Nahuel Huapi and the Andes beyond. Our first (and only full) day in Bariloche suffered from the cold and drizzle that assaulted us during the previous day’s lake crossing from Chile into Argentina. However, the second day provided us with a sunny, if blustery, morning to explore this overly-expanding town in an absolutely gorgeous location. Looking North across Lago Nahuel Huapi to the Andes from Bariloche's port Architec... read more
