After spending an amazing day in Puerto Pyramide visiting the whales of Golfo Nuevo, I spent my next day in Puerto Madryn relaxing and enjoying my time away from Buenos Aires. I slept in late, drank my morning coffee leisurely and wrote in my journal all the while trying to figure out a way to travel a little further south in hopes of seeing the elusive Magellan Penguin colony of Punto Tumbo. I had considered an organized tour but felt that it was incredibly overpriced; I was determined to find another way. I had enquired about renting a car and found that it would be cheaper and much better if I could only find one other person to share the cost and experience with. That is when I ran into Erin and Olga, a couple from ... read more

After a long and arduous 17 hours journey by bus, I finally arrived in Puerto Madryn; this bus, which for whatever reason stopped in every tiny town all night long couldn’t have been worse. Not only was the heat cranked all night long, yes, I was a sweaty mess, but I was also sitting beside this old Italian guy who really wanted to talk with a Canadian kid. Trouble was I understood about 20 % of what he was saying, but that didn’t seem to bother him. Needless to say, I was happy to see the entrance of the Puerto Madryn bus station. This is a small town in the Province of Chubut (Patagonia) that is settled along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The main industry is fishing and tourism as this is the ... read more

So we left Buenos Aires on Tuesday 19 September and caught the overnight bus all the way down the East coast of Argentina to Puerto Madryn. It was a 20 hour trip but fortunately we were in a business class style bus so was pretty luxurious. They had a bingo game for which Amelia called the English-Spanish translation and then went on to win! They also insist on playing the bloodiest, most violent and scary films imaginable at about 11pm! Puerto Madryn is the nearest town to the Peninsula Valdes which is a funny shaped national park sticking out into the Atlantic. We did a terrifying jeep tour up and down impossibly steep lunar coastal terrain. The most exciting part was the whale watching. We were worried that they wouldn't come out to play for us ... read more

Hola chicos y chicas. Yes tis true. I have finally left Barriloche after 3 weeks of learning spanish and generally having a great time. It was comfort to the extreme as I had my own bedroom and a television. Now Im back to the snoring fellow dormers and the poor sleeps!! The day after my birthday, I reached school only to find out me and Peter were to have a new teacher for my final week. Irupe, my original teacher, was great and very patient with us beginners. Now we were to notch it up a level with Silvia, a 29year old blonde Argy who was a great teacher, and fit! Bugger, how was I expected to learn now. Actually, the week was excellent, and I am very glad I stayed on for a 3rd week. ... read more

Into the Valleys of Patagonia then, so to speak. In 1870, a number of welsh emmigrated to Argentina to escape the persecution of the English so they could freely speak their own language and practice their own religion. They settled in area of Patagonia in Argentina and they are still there today. So we stopped for a night in place called Gaiman to check it out. To say the town was sleepy would give people with narcolepsy a bad name! There was hardly anyone on the streets and nothing seemed to be open. At first I was hugely impressed that the Welsh could settle in such a barren, windy area of Patagonia and make a life here. Now I´m even more amazed that people here can live here 120 years on as there seemed to be ... read more

Puerto Madrynissa Hanna paasi laulamaan partioleirien muistojen kunniaksi laululeikkia "aiti antoi mulle rahaa, osta vahan kalaa. Mina... read more

After our adventures in Bariloche the next stop on our tour of South America was a place called Puerto Madyrn. When we first arrived in Puerto Madyrn we soon realised that there was not much to do apart from whale watching. Bim, Turner and myself were very keen on whale watching but were quite concerned for Gareth knowing that he did cry watching Free Willy and we didn't want the experience to bring back all them sad memories. Once again we were the last to board the mini bus to leave for the Patagonia National Wildlife park - if only they could make these trips a little bit later in the morning we'd be fine. Our guide for the day was Hugo, an Argentinean wildlife enthusiast who talked for the whole 1 and 1/2 hr journey ... read more

It was a very long journey down to Puerto Madryn on the northern edge of the Patagonian region. We arrived in the afternoon, leaving us the morning to stare out of the window of the coach and marvel at the sheer nothingness of the barren landscape before us. Puerto Madryn is definitely an upmarket beach resort which would be lovely in the Summer but it does manage to lure visitors in the winter, principally because the Golfo Nuevo bay is the home of the Southern Right Whale during its breeding season! The whales escape from the cold Antartic waters at the beginning of June to bathe in this secluded bay which receives warm tidal fronts from the North, just off the coast of Brazil. Whales continue to arrive up until July as the ecoystem is sufficiently ... read more

Puerto Madryn, on the Atlantic coast, is renowned for its whale watching, as the Southern Right Whale breeds there, often only meters from the shoreline. While there, i came across another texan, Matt, who though i hadnt met him before, was a friend of my friend Joey, and had been to parties at my house in college!... read more
