I went on a tour today of the town of Tigre on the river delta by catamaran and then on to the town of San Isidro by train. The river people live in houses on stilts because of the rising river at times. Several private clubs in BA have rowing practice on the river from their private docks, and also vacation houses. The vegetation in the are is semi tropical and lush. The town of San Isidro is the fifth of ten stops on the train from the station where we embarked, Delta, and is a short ride on a quaint little train. I don´t think the train is more than a tourist attraction, but it was pleasant to ride. There is a cathedral in the town and the usual shopping opportunities, but it was a ... read more

We crossed from Carmelo, Uruguay, through the Tigre Delta to Tigre in Argentina. The Tigre Delta begins at Tigre, with waterways that wind through the land for miles and miles. However, close to Tigre, some of the land has been given over to the well to do Portenos (BA natives) to build their holiday homes on. As we approached the town there were countless boat-wrecks rusting near the banks of the river - it is crazy that they are left there as they really are an eyesore. Tigre is considered part of the Buenos Aires district and is no more than 15kms from the centro. But it is very different - relaxed and green with some grand detached houses. We found the most amazing place to stay - a hundred year old house in a convincing ... read more

So, in the spirit of trying to actually get up to date with my attempts to let everyone know what I'm doing, I'm going to talk about my trip to Tigre and my week of Spanish lessons in the one post. This way I'll only be about a week or two behind where I actually am... and I may finally complete my travel writing sometime in 2012. Having explored the sites of Bs As in the days after I first arrived, I expanded my range and started to look at the city's hinterland. The one thing that was starting to get to me was the lack of large expanses of open water. Now, I may have been spoiled by my place back in Sydney, but the artificial confines of Puerto Maedryn really didn't do much for ... read more

Tigre is where people from Buenos Aires go to in weekends to escape the city. One gets there by taking a train, which gives a good view of the less fashionable sights of Buenos Aires: slums and dim suburbs galore. Tigre itself has a friendly 'local tourism' feel to it, but the real fun starts out of town: a massive delta of teh Rio Paraña makes for hepas of islands and canals, with lush green banks. Boats are the most common form of public transport in Tigre, and what's not to like about that. It's touristy nature does make it a bit of an uninteresting town for people that like to go to more tranquil places. I tried for a long time to find a boat to a remote island where i could just camp and ... read more

For easter weekend, we wanted to get out of the city, but were told that it's one of the busiest travel weekends of the year around here. To investigate for ourselves, we (collaborating with a classmate) went down to the major bus terminal which sends busses out to all ends of the country and beyond and, very last minute (i.e. a few hours before the busses left) tried to book a trip out to Iguazu to see the falls for the 3 day weekend. After spending over an hour at the bus station comparing prices, we were able to find cheap tickets to Iguazu and just before booking them decided we should probably book our return tickets as well. Alas, there were NO available seats to come home on Sunday... so no trip to Iguazu for ... read more

As a class, we have a few larger "excursions" planned for the term. The first of these was a trip to El Tigre, where many city-dwellers have little vacation "casitas" on the river banks (kind of like lakeside bungalows in New England). It was a gorgeous day - we took a nice boat ride to a restaurant on an island in the river, and afterwards made a visit to San Isidro, where we visited another feria and were treated to helados by our professor (who is AMAZING) ... read more

We had heard about a small town north of BA called Tigre. We heard that it was picturesque and worth a visit for the day. The subway ran from near our hostel to the train station so we decided to get that instead of the bus. Our train tickets to Tigre were a little under €1 each return, for a one hour journey. We passed through many towns on our way out of BA and saw a huge racing track called the Hippodrome. When we got to Tigre we went looking for a tourist office to see what there was to do. The town itself is on the river Tigre and takes its name from there (obviously!). Most activities are based around either taking a walk or a cruise along the river. We chose to take ... read more

We are nearing the end of this trip....and doing some of the things we missed at the beginning of the trip here... Yesterday, we walked arcross the city from our hotel through St. Telmo (where BA originated) to La Boca (where immigrants arrived, and tango grew famous, along with soccer) for about 7 hours, stopping for meals and sights. We strolled through antique markets, got caught in a thunderstorm, walked into La Boca (where looking at poverty painted bright colors is a tourist attraction), walked with the crowds waiting to to get into the Boca Juniors game (where Maradona played...) and decided not to join them (a good idea it turned since the thunderstorms increased as the gane time neared), and watched tango finally.... The day before, we spent time with Silvina and Enders, the couple ... read more

Today me and some of the people from the class(Chris, Heather, Caitlin, Katrina, Bonnie and Julia) took the train up to Tigre. It's about an hour outside of downtown B.A. and was quite beautiful. We met at the train station at 10:00 of which I'm including some pictures. I walked and on the way found different statues made from recycled stuff that were pretty cool. Once I met everyone the line for tickets went literally out the doors of the train station. We got tickets for a whole 2,70 pesos which is cheaper then a bottle of water. We grabbed some of the seats by the door which were higher in part because they looked interesting and in part because the train was pretty full. We realized quickly that you simply slide out of the seats ... read more

Saturday we had a trip to El Tigre, a city which is just north of Buenos Aires, and the Parana River Delta. We toured a series of islands and waterways, where many people have weekend houses. It sort of reminded me of in the United States how people have lakeside cottages they go to during their days off. Instead of roads, there are rivers, and instead of cars the people have boats. Even their supermarkets are on boats. It was a really pretty area to see, and it was nice to have a day away from the city, even though I’ve found I love living in the capital. We spent most of the day at a recreation area called El Alcazar, which had beaches, areas for sports, and food. One of the highlights of our day ... read more
