Initially we were planning to visit the modern museum but on location found out that it was under renovation, so instead we followed south passing Russian Orthodox church and finally reaching la Boca. La Boca was created by the settlement of italian immigrants. Its a pretty neat place with tango dancers of every restaurant patio and multitude of little shops. Getting there was the most interesting part ... read more

Then we went to the “Puerto de Frutos” (fruit port) in the afternoon, which is now a crafts fair located in the old fruit market by the riverside. The trip to Tigre took us 40 minutes on a train. This was the first time I saw shanty towns in BsAs in such proximity as the train pulled out of the station. It looked davastating and disturbing. ... read more

Geo: -34.5843, -58.5251Up at 5:45 AM for the early train to the Tigre Delta. For a tour, you'd think it'd be a little more luxurious, in terms of sleeping in, but this is as rough as my backpacking trips! Breakfast was skipped, and we piled into a bunch of taxis bound for the train station.Ranjit made an interesting observation - he told Wade and I that last night he had been casually gazing out their room's window (which happens to be on the opposite of the courtyard from ours, one floor up), and commented on Wade's habit of brushing his teeth in his underwear. "I feel sorry for you ...", he told me! I dunno ... this whole "Cult of Wade" thing is getting out of hand ... we suspected that Ranjit was stealthily lurking behind ... read more

Hola again!! Im stuck in Mendozas bus terminal for another few hours as i wasnt allowed on the earlier bus so i thought i might as well carry on with my blogs while im on a roll and have time..... although these ones will be shorter because im starting to get square eyes! ;o) Tigre is a popular river-front town an hour north of BA! The boats to Uruguay are cheaper from Tigre than from BA so Aubrey and I decided to spend a few days in Tigre on the way to Uruguay! There was only one hostel we could find in Tigre so it was obviously really expensive, although luckily i had a HI card which made it a bit cheaper! That afternoon we just wandered around the town and then relaxed in the hostel ... read more

A day in Tigre After sleeping in to 'recover” from a week of learning and socializing last night (I could not believe how many people get all dressed up for Halloween even here, loco!) I made pancakes for the family! Yeah a real breakfast! I had brought a packet of pancake mix and maple syrup as a little “typical American breakfast” gift for the family and so Cristina asked me to show her how to make them. What a good start to the weekend! In the afternoon I met one of the teachers who wanted to join me on a short trip to Tigre, and so we met downtown and took the train to this city approx. 35 miles outside of B's A's in the river delta. Tigre is one of the most popular weekend get-aways ... read more

Today we are off to Tigre…the New Orleans of Argentina. Well maybe not quite that sophisticated but it is a delta town about an hour outta town. Our class meets up at the Belgrano train station. This is the same train system that we didn’t take to La Plata because of its decrepit status. I have to agree it’s not the Ritz but it gets you there. What do you want for 80 centavos. We had to stand most of the way looking out at some of the northern burbs that the affluenzer BA’ers are moving to in droves to get outta the pollution, both atmospheric and audi-ale. Tigre gets its name from the jaguars that lived around here once…they call them tigres in South America. We jumped off the tren and moseyed over to the ... read more

We awoke at 0730 and had planned to go to Boca District to see if we could get tickets to Sunday afternoons Boca Juniors v Estudiantes game but bumped in to a couple of blokes who seemed to think that they would not be on sale until game day. Plan B was to take a 50 minute train ride to Tigre, a town north of Buenos Aires that lies on Delta del Paraná. It turned out to be a good decision. We took the Subte to Retiro then boarded a train to Tigre 50 minutes for $1.10 (NZ$0.55)! The hub of the town is Puerto de Frutos a huge market but (this being Argentina) nothing was opened when we got there around 10am. The Argentines don’t seem to do anything until midday so we walked a ... read more

Last week of Spanish school. On Wednesday night we go with Flor and Martin to a modern ballet, something I would never normally go to but it is short and varied enough to keep me entertained. More exciting is the thought of pizza and Brazilian cocktails afterwards which is enough to make us shamefully 30 minutes late for school the next day. One of our tasks at school this week is to buy certain ingrediants from a shop, we misunderstand and buy and then cook them for tea. Slightly embarassing the next day when everybody else has brought theirs in to class. On Friday we 'graduate' from school and get a recognised level of study. Although this may sound like a bit of a joke, we have actually learnt enough Spanish now to get through the ... read more

Well, I suppose it would be fitting to talk about this weekend. I spent a large chunk of it outside of the city, and now that I think about it this was the first time I’ve left since Iguazú, which now that I think about it was only a month ago. Lots of sudden realizations here. That’s all of course as long as you don’t count the few minutes that I spent on the other side of avenida General Paz when I went to Mataderos. You all can figure that out for yourselves. So this weekend officially started, I guess, on Saturday (though Friday may as well have been a weekend day as well). Regardless though, I “awoke,” meaning I opened my eyes and gave up the night-long struggle to fall asleep, at 7:40 and checked ... read more

Finally with my studies all over and done it was time to travel for my remaining days here in South America…If you asked me now, I would tell you rite now im at a stage where I feel like this is my place and I actually feel like I live here and in a way im sort of really sad to be leaving very soon….i mean literally I know the streets of Buenos Aires inside out now..know the customs and at times even began using the slang here when getting around so travellin to other places didn’t seem that daunting anymore… Becuz I was also at a stage where my budget is goin to break any min now…I decided to go and visit Tigre and the Delta area and San Isidro the cheap way and Im ... read more
