As I mentioned in an earlier post, Raul Alfonsin, ex-president of Argentina (1983-1989) died this past Tuesday. His funeral occurred today, and the procession passed by my apartment building, so I did a little documentation from the balcony (please excuse my poor videography skills) Alfonsin was a widely respected man in Argentina - many considered him to be the most honest, democratic leader of the nation. He took power after the tragic rule of Jorge Videla's military junta, and his election as president was a surprising victory for the radical party (most thought that the Peronist party would dominate). One of Alfonsin's biggest causes was human rights; one of his most famous actions as president was the trial of military officials from Videla's regime for their human rights violations. It was really interesting to watch the ... read more

A few of us decided to go back to San Telmo for the feria de antiguidades that happens there on Sundays - it was really neat to walk around the town and see all of the vendors, musicians, and street performers. There are also a few pictures at the end here from a fantastic lunch that we had with our UADE professors and program directors at a restarant called "Prosciutto" ... read more

Street protests are REALLY common in Argentina (it's not unusual to encounter traffic problems because sections of streets are closed off due to demonstrators...) We saw this one while walking to lunch one day after class.... read more

As a class, we have a few larger "excursions" planned for the term. The first of these was a trip to El Tigre, where many city-dwellers have little vacation "casitas" on the river banks (kind of like lakeside bungalows in New England). It was a gorgeous day - we took a nice boat ride to a restaurant on an island in the river, and afterwards made a visit to San Isidro, where we visited another feria and were treated to helados by our professor (who is AMAZING) ... read more

We took a bus tour as a class and stopped at a few key places in the city...we also spent some time over in San Telmo (an interesting barrio in BsAs best explored by day...gets a little sketchy at night...). Pictures from the trip!... read more

We took a little walk (slash long walk) over to Plaza San Martin to check out this display of "international bears"....there was one for every country, painted by different artists. I'm not sure why bears were the chosen animal, but I think the general theme was international diversity and cooperation (there were two "golden rule" bears in the center of the circle of bears in the plaza) ... read more

Some pictures from el cemetario at Recoleta...there's a popular quote that can be found in many travel guides which says that the cemetery "Is the most beautiful barrio in Buenos Aires...only all the people are dead" (or something along those lines). It really is incredible though - like a city of tombs, with incredible architecture and sculptures. It's also the final resting place of famous Argentines such as Evita, Sarmiento, Facundo, and as of today, Raul Alfonsin* *Alfonsin was the president of Argentina from 1983-1989. He died the day before yesterday at the age of 82, and today his funeral procession passed by our house (pictures and videos in a later entry). ... read more

These are some pictures from my first two days exploring - we went to the "feria" at Plaza Francia (an open-air artesanal market that's set up every weekend and on holidays/"feriados"), ate lunch at a cafe in downtown Recoleta, and checked out the busy area by Avenida Florida ... read more
