OK, I know - I haven't been blogging regularly (read, at all) for the last couple of weeks. so now i'm gonna try and remember everything that's happened for all of that time. hope you're in a reading mood... Christmas was spent at the esther honey veterinary clinic with two scottish vet student girls (Alice & Catherine) who were doing a similar placement for their course. there were other people there too, a vet from belgium (sophie) and a recent high school graduate from Melb (Lucy) and a bunch of animals. it was a bit of a makeshift christmas lunch - not really the traditional meal you would expect at home, but it was awesome anyway. The week between christmas and new years was spent at the hospital - i was on a surgical rotation for ... read more

Well, it seems like while the rest of the country has been having average weather, we seem to have stumbled upon the one place in New Zealand where the sun has been shining. We don't know quite what to do with ourselves. Ben had the great idea that we would turn two or three decent trips into a mega trip of about 14 days. The plan was to start on the Caples, throw in the Routeburn, dash up the Dart river, hop over cascade saddle into the Matukituki, get to the Wilkin via some contrived route through the Albert burn and finish off with Gillsepie pass and the Young Valley (14 days or so) This was a fine idea in principle, but the reality hit home when I tried to put on my pack at the ... read more

The Road Trip began the day after Boxing day in Sydney. (That's the 27th December Bish) Myself, Daz, Shaz, Mum, Dad, Anna and Benjy all piled into a Kia People Carrier and headed up the East Coast. The aim was to reach Australia Zoo which is of course famous for being Steve Irwins Zoo (RIP Steve, we luv ya but you have got the most annoying daughter in the whole wide world). It is located in Beerwah which is a couple of hours north of Brisbane. After liasing with a few local Aussies in Sydney they couldn't believe that we were planning to reach the Zoo in a day. Well we set out to prove them wrong,.................we didn't!! It took us 3 hours to get out of Sydney but we felt that a 12 hour stint ... read more

Hi folks, I'm staying in central Brisbane for a week to get a closer look at the city. Brisbane is a nice city, with a village type feel and just enough people to feel busy but relaxed. As it's not such an old city compared to most others I have been to outside Oz, I haven't had a knackering itinerary of ancient monuments and museums to cram into my days; it's more about picking an area from the map in the Rough Guide I stole from the Bellview in Cairns, getting there, and walking around exploring in a totally random way. So far I spent time roaming the South Bank - I think it might be modelled on our own South Bank as it has the same sort of feel, with museums and theatres in big ... read more

Well we have been deciding on arrival how long we want to stay as nothing is pre booked. Melbourne looked nice and after a couple of weeks out in the sticks with thousands of Aussie nuckle draggers we needed a bit of city life. We stayed in a nice hotel and recharged the batteries. Our last day was to be at the MCG for the one day England v Aus. Neither of us had been to a cricket match before and didnt know what to expect. How long a one dayer takes or even how the game is planned. We arrived at 1 for a 2:15 start and found ourselves surrounded by thousands of Aussie nuckle draggers except for Cleggy, a guy four rows down with an England flag and Cleggy written on his back. As ... read more

This is something I would often told my girls when they were trying out their wings and forgot to pack their parachutes! As I dusted them off, I would say; "You'll get to Z from A just as surely if you go from A to B and then C ....." It's a long way from Australia (there's the 'A'), to Spain and South America. And there is only 'me, myself and I' on this trip. So Singapore is a good place to try out many new things. Customs & Immigration in a post-September 11 world, hostel life, huge crowds of people everywhere and wrestling with the combination locks on my small case. Necessary, because I've left my glasses inside and I can't see the numbers! The Singaporeans are a smiling, friendly, very multi-cultural group of people. ... read more

Wow! Who said I wasn't IT literate? This looks good I think - I'm doing well, so far... The journey - it began in the year 2001 when I was travelling through Europe wondering what I was going to do with my life... Having already been a Social Worker for a few years and having the experiences of working in both Australia and the UK, with a bit of travelling thrown in (which was my dream!), I found myself faced with questions about "the next step"..... The answer hit me when I was on a bus travelling with fantastic friends (from Oakhall) "I know what is beating in my heart - working in Africa with traumatised kids..." So, being a Christian, I prayed... and prayed... and told God He could send me anywhere in the world ... read more

Melbourne Town Hall Melbourne Town Hall is the central municipal building of the city of Melbourne and it is the seat of the Local Government Area of the City of Melbourne. Melbourne was officially incorporated as a town on December 13, 1842, however, it wasn't until 1854 that its first Town Hall was completed. Begun in 1851, the work ground to a halt with the beginning of the Victorian gold rush. The foundation stone of a new, grander Town Hall was laid on November 29, 1867 by the visiting Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, after the demolition of the first. The current Town Hall officially opened on August 11, 1870 and is another piece created by architect Joseph Reed. The building is topped by Prince Alfred's Tower, named after the Duke. The Tower includes a 2.44 ... read more
