You can’t take what might be your only trip to Australia and not visit perhaps its most iconic landmark. And that is why we find ourselves here, in the barren, practically uninhabited, fly infested Red Centre of Australia, finishing off the family portion of our great trip at Uluru, or Ayers Rock. We arrived here shortly after 11:00 am yesterday after doing the four-hour drive from Alice Springs, or The Alice as the Aussies call it. It wasn’t 100+ degrees with a scorching sun like we were expecting, but rather it was in the low 80’s and it was spitting rain all day. Although, this was probably more pleasant, it really posed a threat to some of the things that we planned on doing here. Namely, viewing the bright red rock at sunset, looking up to ... read more

Caught the 9:35 greyhound bus from Noosa to Hervey Bay arrived at 2:25 then rang the hostel for a courtesy pick up this done arrived at the hostel and was shown to the dorm which is more of a self contained flat with four people in the dorm. As I had planned to stop here 2 nights I extended to 3 nights. I booked a day trip to Fraser Island for Sat 20th Jan. This afternoon I went down to the esplanade and got my bearings then went to the Irish bar for food as I am sick of getting chips with everything, they seem to be the only place that offers a different type of potato’s ie mashed. ... read more

Fraser Island was the first of our three prepaid tours, and being such we were a little apprehensive for if the tour turned into a bit of a nightmare we'd be stuffed, it was already paid for mate! We needn't have worried; we had an absolutely brilliant time. The tour itself and the people we got to know during the trip made it what it was, a real fun adventure. In hindsight it was our best trip, we couldn't have asked for a better trip or a better bunch of people to share it with. We went on a 2 night 3 day Cooldingo tour, food and Accommodation included. Our days were spent seeing the various attractions of the Island, touring around in a custom made bus. If you didn't know already, Fraser Island is the ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Dunedin January 19th 2007

One of the cool things about New Zealand's South Island is the abundance of unusual wildlife that is available to anyone to go and see. Our campsite for the night was not far from a place called Shag Point which we drove to first thing to have a spot of breafast before wandering over to the cliffs and finding a handful of seals basking on the rocks below. A few minutes' drive away was a viewing area for yellow eyed penguins but we were there way too early and the penguins had all gone swimming for the day (well, the weather was nice so who can blame them?). The penguins don't come ashore again until early evening, so we cursed our rotten luck to have come at the wrong time of day. Rather than wait around ... read more

This was a nice little 3 day trip up the Young River, over Gillespie pass into the Siberia Valley, then down the Wilkin. On arriving in Makarora, DOC told us the river was 'in flood' and we would need to take a jet boat. Strangely enough, the jet boat guy reckoned we would need to take his jet boat as well. Not convinced, we thought we would go down and have a look for ourselves. The crossing was a waist deep affair, but not too swift and we were pleased that we gave it a go (even if that meant wet undies for the tramp up the river). We later found out the trampers before us that decided the river was flooded were from Aussie and weren't used to seeing water in rivers. The tramp itself ... read more

A Maori legend has it that long ago a god-like being, Tu-te-raki-whanoa, wielded his axe to carve out the landscape of South Island. If you look at a map of the southern end of South Island, you might well believe it. Indeed, the island's southwestern coast, facing Australia and the Tasman Sea, does look like it has had an axe taken to it - convoluted and narrow inlets seemingly hewn out of the spine of the Alps. Southland's dozens of fjords are in fact the result not of a cosmic axe but of millions of years of erosion by immense rivers of ice - glaciers. Now retreated, the glaciers dug deep V-shaped valleys into the mountain rock. Fiordland (with an i...) is the result. Our gateway to Fiordland is Manapouri, a small settlement that has played ... read more

Today is a beach day! We went to the famous Bondi Beach and our jaws dropped the minute we got there (albeit for different reasons). It is a gorgeous white sand beach with trademarked* blue water. It is also populated with many topless women and strapping surfer dudes. Despite the extremely high UV ratings in this part of the world, less than 10% of the people on the beach were using umbrellas or sun shades of any kind. CM is always in search of shade, so we rented an umbrella. The government takes skin cancer seriously - there is a public service campaign for sun protection and the Cancer Society sells sunblock with a portion of the proceeds going to research. The ads feature a penguin and read "Slip, Slap, Slop": 1) Slip on a shirt, ... read more

Sunnuntaina piti lähteä matkaan heti aamusta, sillä hostellista oli kirjauduttava ulos jo aamukymmeneltä. Onneksi ei ollut paha krapula! Bussi maaseudulle, tarkemmin sanottuna Kyabramiin, lähtee vasta 18.30. Neljän hengen huon... read more

Landed in Perth, Western Australia at 8.15 am. Lots of queues at immigration, but officials were friendly and only doing their jobs. Couldn’t wait to see John and Nikki, but they weren’t there when we walked out of the Arrivals Lounge. Bob trotted off to put on his shorts and then Chris spotted John and Nikki walking towards us. It was great to see them again all smiling and laughing as usual and we all had lots of kisses and hugs. They had brought both cars, so all the men got in John’s car and all the ladies in Nikki’s. It was about 40 minutes drive to Mindarie, (situated on the outer northern coastal suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia and is located 36 km from Perth's central business district. I'm sure most of you have heard of the Great Barrier Reef at some point or another. However I wasn't aware that it was one of the Seven Wonders of the World until we had arrived in Port Douglas and started making plans to go out and see it. Then, I started wondering what the other wonders where, and that is when I found out that there aren’t just Seven Wonders of the World, but like Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, Seven Wonders of the Modern World, Seven Wonders of the Natural World, and the list goes on. Anyway, the GBR is one of the Natural World Wonders because it is the only living thing that can be seen from space, or something like that! Back to our day there: we left the marina on ... read more
