Oceania » Cook Islands » Rarotonga January 18th 2007

With 'why does it always rain on me?' running firmly through my mind, I tried to ignore the pounding rain upon arrival at Rarotonga at 4am, telling myself it will have cleared up by the morning. My spirits were lifted when I entered the arrivals hall (well small room which also served as immigration, departures, duty free shopping and anything else you'd need at an airport!) and was greeted by a man singing tradtional island music and playing a ukelele - at 4am!!!! Loa Angeles could certainly learn some lessons here! I'd had a bit of a nightmare organising some accommodation as everywhere was really busy, but had managed to get a bed in the Tiare Village, which promised to be a clean, friendly, hostel environment, only a short walk from the beach - ideal! Unfortunately, ... read more

Desperate to get these blogs up to date, and this is one hell of a story to tell! As i mentioned, we met rob in hervey bay looking a skeletal white next to us, happy as larry and chuffed to bits to be there! But as it turns out the backpacking life may not be for bobby............ read on and see why! We were staying in the Fraser Rovers hostel, sounded great and looked great, nice dorms, big fans, swimming pool, bar and we could book our 4x4 adventure on the sand island known as Fraser through them! So we settled down to a few bears, listening to the talk on how to be 'Dingo Safe' and how not to drive a 4x4, finding out what our self guided itinery was and meeting the other guys ... read more

This was a shameless hut bagging trip really, - plus a chance to see the Cascade saddle route from below. Yep, glad we didn't do that sucker in the wind and rain. Climbing up to Liverpool Hut gave us a sense of what it would be like. My arms were just as sore as my legs from scrambling. Had a look around French Ridge Hut too. Saw a couple of glaciers peeling off and thundering to the valley below. Cool. ... read more

Now when I say to people that Glynn and I love rock, it never occurs to me that people might actually think we're into geology rather than guitars. Today however, was one of those days where nature had clearly misunderstood our meaning and so we found ourselves surrounded by rock after rock after rock, mostly in a good way though! It was a lovely morning when we woke up at the Dansey's Pass Campsite so we took the opportunity to go for a walk by the river running right alongside the site. We had no idea that the river cut through some lovely slate rock formations and we had fun climbing over the jagged edges and watching the turbulent waters racing down the valley. Back in the van, we first went off to look for a ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Franz Josef January 18th 2007

Well this morning we set off for the town of Franz Josef driving down the west coast of the South Island. The good thing about the Magic bus is that instead of just getting to from A to B it does stops of interest along the way that also brake up the drive. Our first stop was morning coffee in a little town with a few great coffee shops; the one we went in had the hugest tea pot collection- I even spotted the famous Count down tea pot that loosing contestants are given when they leave which made me smile. We then went on to a little town called Ross which is famous for gold panning. You pay 5 dollars to have a go your self but when Liz and Sarah had a go ... read more

We arrived last night in Sydney from New Zealand and were really impressed. Large buildings, beautiful beaches and nice people - it could be the perfect city! Today we walked around Sydney and took the ferry to Watson's Bay. We walked around for a bit and hiked up to the "The Gap" - cliffs where they filmed the end of Mission Impossible II. It was hot and we stopped for gelato - not as cheap as in Italy, but pretty tasty nonetheless. The ferries in Sydney are excellent, fast and cheap. They're a great way to see different surrounding areas. In the evening we went out to dinner looking for Moreton Bay Bugs. We found a place and recognized two girls from England who had been on our plane from New Zealand. We pushed tables together ... read more

We had a fantastic welcome to New Zealand from the O'Neill family, our friends from England who emigrated to New Zealand a few years ago. Kim and her youngest son Harry picked us up from Wellington airport and took us straight to Chocolate Fish, a beach cafe which is a Wellington institution, for hot chocolate...and chocolate fish, overlooking the sea. Joanna then proceeded to get sunburnt in about half an hour - an early reminder that there are gaps in the ozone layer around here! That night we had a proper 'down under' barbeque at Kim and Joe's house, where we were staying, giving us a chance to catch up with their three children living at home (Harry, Jack and Emily) and the rest of the family, namely their dog Boris and cat Zorro! We were ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua January 18th 2007

The next stop was Rotorua for a bit of culture and a lot of fun. The first day saw us diving into a giant plastic ball with water in the bottom and then sploshing around inside as the ball rolled down a hill. Excellent fun and I (H) couldn't stop laughing all the way down. After that John jumped on the freefall extreme which was basically a small outdoor wind tunnel. He had fun but he was obviously itching for the real thing!!! Our second day saw us head to White Island - New Zealand's live marine volcano. We had a brilliant tour around the volcano making it up to the crater. Unfortunately the volcano was a bit too active and the gases it was throwing out obscured the view a little (and smelt really really ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Lake Tekapo January 18th 2007

From Dunedin we started to make a bit of a marathon journey to reach the north island in two days. Naturally the first stop for the bus was the steepest bloomin street in the world - agh, we couldnt believe the bus took us there, all that walking for nothing! Anyway, onwards and outwards back into the beautiful scenery NZ has to offer. The bus journeys in the south island constantly provided us with amazing views, we never bored of them because at times they were simply awe-inspiring, varying from Hobbiton rolling hills, flat farming land with large deer farms to treacherous snow capped peaks covered in glaciers and expansive lakes that reflect the colour of the sky. The bus ride to Lake Matheson was no different and there we stopped for a photo opportunity to ... read more
