Happy New Year New Year, new continent. Almost as far as we'll get from home, yet a whole lot more like home than anywhere we've been so far. Except that it wasn't minus 4 on New Year's Eve. And you can plan a barbeque (complete with shrimp of course) further than 12 minutes in advance. Also a lot more homey than anywhere we've stayed, thanks to the excellent and endless hospitality from Alison and Shay (thanks again guys!) - it's handy having family in far flung places. Especially handy when they can direct you to a rather fine spot for catching the New Year fireworks over Sydney Harbour. We were lucky they were willing to take us out in public after David tried to walk through a glass door at the back of their flat. He ... read more

Sunday Harbour Cruise. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words. There are quite a few in this blog. On Monday I caught the train to Circular Quay downtown Sydney to go on the "Coffee Cruise" on the Captain Cook Cruises As an aside,an interesting thing about the trains, they are double decker's,on the platform you enter the train and there are about 20 seats on that level then you have the option also of going downstairs to the lower deck or up to the upper deck a good utilisation of space. They don't really look any bigger than the trains in the U.K. The other point I found out was that you swivel the top part of the seat so that you could face the way the train was travelling At Circular Quay I purchased the ticket ... read more

Well I've finally reached Sydney having got close to then crossed the equator for the first time in my life. Actually I'm really in Doncaster and I made the banner and..... To backtrack slightly - I left my idyllic corner of Kyoto and finally got to Osaka after a one hour wait on the wrong platform at Kyoto station followed by a twelve minute train ride to Osaka on the "Shinkansen". Thereafter I spent a further hour trying to negotiate the local train system before wandering out of JR Namba station to spend three hours wandering around lost until an expat from the Potteries told me how to get to my modest but comfortable hotel. I had enough time to have a good look around Minami which district can only be the true model for "Bladerunner". ... read more

Hi All, Since we last wrote we have been to Surfers Paradise and Noosa but only spent a couple of days in each place, but we have just returned from camping on Fraser Island which the majority of the photos we will upload will be from there! Surfers Paradise was a bit too commercial for our liking and a bit of a shock after the relaxing atmosphere of Byron Bay so we only spent one night there and then caught the greyhound up to Noosa and stayed in a lovely little Backpackers right on the river for a couple of days. We departed for Hervey Bay - a gateway to Fraser on Sunday and had a meeting at the hostel, formed a group of 11 between ourselves and then set off at 7 the next morning! ... read more

Got up early. Walked miles to this Sky ride park which had a gondola going up, not even to the top of, a hill. Looked around and decided to go back down as the 'luge' looked really placid. This place would be good for families but it wasn't for us. We'd been fooled by the maps that the Zorb place was closer than it was and I had insisted on walking. Anyway, we walked back to the campervan and then drove to the Zorb place. This is where you can get inside an inflated giant ball and roll down a hill. I went down in a 'wet' Zorb which had water inside and decided to go down the zig-zag circuit rather than straight down. I have to say it was really good fun and as we ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Islands January 18th 2007

We picked up a leaflet at the local tourist information centre about sailing in the 'Bay of Islands'. We were informed about the Bay of Islands from a couple we met whilst visiting the Similan Islands in Thailand. They had retired and had a catamaran moored in one of the bay's. There were many excellent tours you could go on but by far the best was a day's sail around the Bay of Islands aboard the 'Schooner' the 'R. Tucker Thompson'. This tall ship was spectacular and we were told that you could help out aboard and learn to sail it. We jumped at the chance to be aboard such a magnificent ship. As you can see from the photos it truly was a great day and fantastic experience. We never really learnt much though. We ... read more
