Monday 8 th April, Port HedlandG’day Discovery Park Port HedlandCost $43 per night with membershipRated by us 6/10Mileage 17089 travelled 342Easy pack up this morning on what appears to be a cooler day, lets hope the cyclone has passed and taken it’s low with it and the hot weather.Stopped on the way out of Dampier to photograph probably the most photographed sculptor in The Pilbarra, a bronze statue of Red Dog and information boards about his life. It was really well done and he is famous I guess. The day is cloudy and overcast and the patterns in the clouds are amazing, took lots of photos along the way. The landscape is flat and brown looks like the rain has not reached here this year. A little further along it was noticeably greener wi ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Blue Mountains April 7th 2024

Today is an early start. We are expecting decent weather, so we hav earmarked today, based on the weather forecast, to go to The Blue Mountains. The Blue Mountains is a rugged region west of Sydney. It is known for dramatic scenery, and my any waterfalls and beautiful view points. I got up at 6:30, to my alarm, it wasn’t very easy, but I did it! I think Bernard went for 6am! We were showered changed, and ready to go by 7am. Perfectly to the plan! We checked our bags for brollies, snacks, water, phone wires, and phones. Gavin, who apartment shares with Bernard, has really kindly let us use his car, which makes a huge difference for us today. We headed down base level 2, to collect Gavin’s car, we set off, ready for the ... read more

Can you visit Tasmania in just a short week, you can, but you will very fast find out that you need more. So on this blog entry...we touched few places, and we already know that we will need to get back. This blog is about a night in Launceston, the long drive around to reach Hobart and finally two nights in Hobart plus two dives at Eagleneck next to the Tasman National Park. The golf is done...the wine tastings are done, but trust me, those two we could do a lot more too! Driving from the two main cities of Tasmania, I name Launceston and Hobart, by Highway 1, is only just over 2 hours drive. This would be way too easy...and we would not see much of the wonders of this amazing island. So instead, ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland April 6th 2024

We had been warned. Auckland is damp and freezing throughout the winter months. Thankfully, we would only be there for three days! All of the foregoing is true, but our little stay gave us enough of a flavor of the place to persuade us both that we should return another (warmer) time. Though we were sleeping at a wonderful, peaceful hostel outside the center (Brown Kiwi), we spent the first night resting at an old work colleague's house on the other side of town, where we had been invited for supper (and quite a few bottles of wine). The following day, we cleansed ourselves of the hangover by walking for over two hours back into town, gaining a beautiful sense for the various suburbs on the way back,In addition to the region's often unpredictable weather. Once ... read more

Today was another lazy start, which was good for me! I had a really easy night, followed by an easy morning. I've had a message from Bernard, he is on his way home. I'm pleased that he went all out, on his night out. I don't want him to miss out of his own life, just to sit at home with me! A job that I need to sort out, whilst I have the time, is my SIM card. I have had an email to inform me that I have only 3 days left. It’s so important when you are travelling to always have access to the Internet. I will only need 4 days short of data until I leave, but I still need it for those 4 days. I managed to access the app, and ... read more

Saturday 6 th April, DampierDampier Caravan ParkCost $39 per night Rated by us 5/10Mileage 16747 travelled 0Late rise after a cool night thanks to thye air con, so glad we got it working, the night temperatures still been in the high 20’s and humid. We had a slow drive around Karratha and Dampier, not much for tourists but then it is a mining, shipping town. G is enjoying watching the ships load and I found a sign with some interesting fun facts about the port. The work that goes on here is fascinating, not sure why there are so many people live here just for the port as the mines are all inland. The one port we are looking at loads 16 ships per week with a blended iron ore all going to china, ... read more

Today I slept in . It was a late night last night. I woke up naturally at 9:30. I noticed a message from Bernard; he actually got up for the 6:30 Vicious cycle class!! WOW! It’s his day off, he had a late night…. And he still went! That’s dedication. I can’t remember being that dedicated to anything! Ha ha. Maybe it’s an age thing! I just relaxed around the apartment, I chatted on with Gavin for a while whilst I had a cup of tea. Then Bernard came home. (The arrival of Chez Bernard!) Last night, we had discussed going for bagels for brekky, but due to the endless pouring rain, Bernard had picked up some shopping on the way home from vicious. He set up his pots and pans, whilst I did an excellent ... read more

Here we are, on the big island of Tasmania. This is a first for Tanya and I. Oh surprise! Tripadvisor algorithm now believes that I've seen 98% of the world! What a big joke isn't it? The ride from King Island was another short hop on a small Saab 340. Solid rain was forecasted for that afternoon, so I did keep my finger crossed. We indeed had some rain, but nothing to bother too much. Did pick up a way nicer car at the small airport of Burnie...way more expensive rental too...and we drove the short 2 hours ride to Launceston, the second biggest city of Tasmania, population 77,363! Tonight, not only do we have a comfortable bed, but a decent kitchenette too! So once check-in done, straight to the supermarket to stock on some local ... read more

Friday 5 th April, DampierDampier Caravan ParkCost $39 per night Rated by us 5/10Mileage 16747 travelled 332Interesting run out of Onslow towards Dampier, lots of salt lakes dissected by the highway, they harvest them every few years in rotation, they seem to cover a lot of ground. The landscape is now very barren with towering hills full of iron ore, the dust and ground is the famous red that gets into everything, annoying but you have to experience it to see what it can do. White bed sheets are looking very pink despite nightly showers, may need to get some cheap dark ones!!!The road is what I call typical Australia, it runs dead straight and disappears into the horizon, the heat shimmers in the distance and causes a mirage of were the ... read more

I did set the alarm for 9am this morning, but actually woke up naturally at 8:40. I was so ready for my bed last night! I was the apprehensive all day about the cycle class. As it turned out, for no reason, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. Don’t get me wrong, it was hard work, but I actually enjoyed it. So today is a new day! I thought I might ache, but I think that all the walking, and knowing how to pace myself, allowed me to participate at my level, and enjoy it! So no aches today. I’m going to keep the walking going today. Bernard is at work, so I’m out exploring on my own. As always the first job for me is to have breakfast. I decided to get the train into ... read more
