One of the more pleasurable experiences while one is on holiday is to wake in the morning to a view that is new to you and the sun shining. And so it was this morning in our cosy holiday home in Waimangaroa. We are a short distance back from the beach so the view of the sea is in the distance but the native NZ pigeon or Kereru was sitting in the tree right outside the lounge breakfasting on berries was a delight to see. We very occasionally see them far away in tree tops at home but not as close as here. With no weekend housework to do we lay in listening to the radio interviews of the victorious and vanquished from the National Election yesterday. The status quo will prevail for another 3 years. It has been nearly 12 months since our last ‘holiday’ and so it is time to recharge the work batteries and take a break. This time we are off to the South Island and plan a quick circuit of the island starting and ending back in Christchurch and getting as far south as Alexandra for the spring Blossom Festival while staying with Chris and Marilyn(Chris being Gretchen’s brother) Our dear friends Ruth and Owen turned up at 6.30am this morning to chauffer us to Tauranga Airport in readiness for our flight to Christchurch. The Bombardier Q300 is no Airbus A-380 which we flew to and from Europe a year ago and we squeezed into seat 13 A & B(didn’t realise airlines still used ‘13’ in their seat numbers)right in the back of the plane, any further ... read more

Geo: -41.7581, 171.602I can feel the wind blowing through my hair – all ¾ of an inch of it - as the skies clear up and we hit the rugged west coast of the South Island. We are scooting up the coast, staying one night at each location until we get to the point at which we head slightly inland and north. It is exhilarating, freeing, joyful! We have had a run of glorious sunshine and cool breezes and all we do is drive, locate a walk or two to view various landscapes and stunning vistas and stay in unique and friendly backpacker hostels. Our favourites are Global Village and Beaconstone Eco Lodge. I now ask each hostel if they have a cat (to which I am intensely allergic), guiding our decisions about places to stay. ... read more

We had read that there was a little natural hot springs area somewhere across the Lewis Pass. There were no signs to it but it was a certain distance past the sign to the nature reserve. So we kept our eyes peeled for the sign and pulled off into the picnic area to see what we could find. It was only a short distance from the car park apparently so we headed along the river trying to avoid being eaten alive by the killer sand flies! Unfortunately due to what can only be described as a landslide all the hot pools had been filled in!! You could see where they would have been as there were wet sand rings surrounded by rocks in neat little circles! The only one remaining was right by the rivers edge ... read more

So i hitched out of golden bay, which was my longest ever wait at 2.5 hours outside Nelson, then 1.25 hours a little way down the road shocking! But i eventually got there and met ben and sarah in Christchurch, not quite as planned but at least we got there. We had a couple drinks in town and then went back to our seperate hostels. Saturday we met up and then tracked down some friends of mine who are living in town building new bikes out of broken ones. We rode around town for a little while on 'mutant bikes' in the beautiful sun and had a really nice day. In the evening a friend of my friends was having a going away party so my post-birthday bash was tagged on to this and great fun ... read more

... read more

Last night we had a lovely dinner in Franz Josef and then drove to Hokitika and stayed at a wonderful farmstay called Kaniere Farmstay. It was a nice place with two rooms and a kitchen. They had some cows from scotland called Belted Galloway Cattle. They were very furry with messy hair. We drove around Hokitika a bit in the morning and checked out the tea room with the "largest teapot collection in New Zealand" They served some very nice pancakes there. We also visited the Jade Factory and the local library was having a quilt display so we stopped in a took a look. Next we drove to Greymouth and spent some time at the local McDonalds using the internet access there. Greymounth is where the TranzAlpine Railway terminates on the West coast and they ... read more

Monday I set out to cross a small mountain pass near Reefton (through the Waitahu Track). I made my first stream crossing. It appeared to be a straight forward crossing (it was only 10 feet across and relatively shallow), but I slipped and fell into the creek. There was some water in my boots, but all in all I survived with only a bruised ego a new respect for the water. I ultimately made it to the valley slope next to the Waitahu River where the track disappeared due to a major landslide. There were other smaller trails that seemed to lead further down into the valley, but it was getting late, I was without my map and I was now unsure of my ability to cross the river, particularly with the recent rains. So I ... read more

On the 30th we left Picton and headed to Greymouth, via Westport. The drive took us 6hrs but we stopped and looked at a few things along the way. The South Island is quite different from the North, it reminds me of Alberta a lot. There are lots of foothills and Mountains around to look at! On the road from Picton to Westport we discover where our favorite New Zealand wine comes from, which was kinda cool to see considering we had know idea where it was! We drove to Westport to check out a seal colony which was located at Cape Foulwind (with a name like that you know what to expect!). We saw 20 or so seals laying around on the rocks and playing in the surf and we also saw a few pups. ... read more
