White Water Rafting and Jet Boating Finally got the chance to white water rafting after the weather conspiring against us in River Valley, unfortunately this river was only a grade 3-4 compared to river valleys 5. Though as it was the first time i had ever done it, this made little difference as had no real point of reference. Mind you when you were on the rapids you could tell they were quite a bit tamer, than you would have expected. Was all good fun though, and we were offered the chance to go down one of the rapids in the water (obv with a life jacket on), which i gleefully accepted. It is of course winter though and the water was absolutely freezing - so much so that on hitting the water ones chest ... read more

Woke up bright and early for the horse ride Id booked the previous day. Rode a beautiful chesnut called Walter and he was cool (not so little pony). As some of the group had never ridden and were decidedly nervous the guides split the group in two. We headed off for a few canters leaving the first timers in the dust. We rode through the bush then along the sandy banks of the Buller River through some of the magnificent scenery we'd seen from the bus. It was awesome. We also headed off to the gallop field en route to which I was warned that Walter was the fastest and most mental! great! After that nugget of info I was bracing myself. He was cool though. He Knew he was about to get a gallop and ... read more

Another delightful day in New Zealand. NZ is absolutely fabulous as you would imagine. We are in Westport now which is on the West Coast of NZ. This morning we went on a hike along the coast up to a local lighthouse - the coastline is stunning. We even met up with some horses and cows grazing on the way. Afterwords, we went to a great lunch - I had shark ceviche - Delicious. We also went on tours of a local farm and a local port including a tug boat ride. Tonight we are going to another families house for a barbecue and then our host family is taking us out to the local pub to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. It is interesting being on the move all of the time. We stay with host ... read more

Well, I am now in the South Island of New Zealand. Near Westport to be exact! I travelled to several places in the North Island including Taupo, Tauranga, Rotorua and Napier, all are nice, too clean and organised for my liking I think... I gave up on the farm as I wanted to do more hands on stuff with animals, so asked several treking centres if I could come and work in exchange for accomodation. I had loads of resonses and chose one that looked the most interesting. It is called Bullers Adventure Tours and has all sorts of adventure options from white water rafting to quad biking. I am helping with the treks and looking after the 11 horses, with another girl. The scenery around here is amazing, I am based in the Buller Gorge ... read more

argg!! chippy's exhaust pipe broke in half. yah yah, you can laugh....but it's not funny. we are stuck in this crappy industrial town with no car and nothing to do. bleck. and it's saturday so we have to be here til monday when the garages open again. i slept on all this negativity and now i'm over it. just 12 k's out of town is cape foulwind....another seal colony and some really rugged coastline. i rented a bike and road out there and back for the day. it was beautiful, as most things are here. not a bad way to spend the day and tomorrow chippy gets fixed and we're off to the glaciers. woohoo!! woohoo is right. we're now at the franz josef glacier. it's a great little mountain town....boardered by the franz josef glacier ... read more

I'm writing from a bar/cafe/internet outpost in Westport on the West Coast. I THOUGHT this blog would be about the amazing time we had in Abel Tasman or the revisiting of Shambhala, but instead, I'm going to b*tch about our car troubles. Bear with me. Cait and I had pulled off to the side of the road to look at the map and see where we were going to stop for the night. We left Shambhala and the Golden Bay. After deciding to keep on going on to the Pancake Rocks down the West Coast, I pulled back onto the road to travel another hour or so. That's when we heard an awful clang and a scraping noise. "Shit," we both said at the same time. I stopped the car and we took a look under ... read more

Day 65 An early start, we headed for Abel Tasman National Park. We went for a walk along the beach where we parked ourselves for a bit. The tide came in loads in the few hours we were there so we had to go an alternative way back! In the afternoon Stuart did a jet boat ride on the Buller Gorge which was good fun, the boat did quick turns and made everyone soaking wet.... read more

Greymouth - Greymouth is the largest town on the West Coast built on the Grey River. Good place to park the motor home is behind the Caltex station downtown built and maintained by Kea motorhome rentals. Be sure to stop and see the Jade Boulder Gallery, 1 Guinness Street, for the ultimate in jade work. A definite not to be missed place to go 10 km south of town is Shantytown, a restored 1800's pioneer town based upon the West Coast gold rushes of the mid 1800's. We like to stay at Lake Brunner(great trout fishing) outside of town a few kms. From Greymouth it is 102kms to Westport along a scenic ocean drive. 46 kms to your next stop at Punakaki Rocks. A real tourist stop but one well worth seeing. Usually plenty of parking ... read more
