Day 7 - West Coast Drive

Last night we had a lovely dinner in Franz Josef and then drove to Hokitika and stayed at a wonderful farmstay called Kaniere Farmstay. It was a nice place with two rooms and a kitchen. They had some cows from scotland called Belted Galloway Cattle. They were very furry with messy hair.

We drove around Hokitika a bit in the morning and checked out the tea room with the "largest teapot collection in New Zealand" They served some very nice pancakes there. We also visited the Jade Factory and the local library was having a quilt display so we stopped in a took a look.

Next we drove to Greymouth and spent some time at the local McDonalds using the internet access there. Greymounth is where the TranzAlpine Railway terminates on the West coast and they have a nice bit of downtown. We ate lunch at a local pub...nothing special and drove on to Punakaiki and saw the pancack rocks and blowholes. Unfortunatly the blowholes were not blowing 😊

After that we drove on to Westport. The area around Westport is beautiful. We would not recomend the food or town of Westport. Westport is an old coal mining town and it shows. There is also a large colony of fur seals that pull out on the point outside of town, Cape Foulwind. It was very windy 😊 The highlight of the seal colony was 2 fighting seals. We caught the tip end of the fight on video, but it isn't worth posting.

Tomorrow we are hoping to go rafting down the Buller Gorge. the trip may be cancled if they don't get at least 4 people to go.
