A bright sunny morning here in Auckland. Yesterday I spent the day with my new bunkmate Sarah, from the UK, and we went to a nice beach outside of Auckland called Mission Bay. It seems there's a great epidemic going on here, and it's called Ice Cream. I saw that they had a Movenpick there in Mission Bay, and the lineup was about 2 blocks long. New Zealanders love their ice cream. I layed out on the beach for a couple of hours, and enjoyed the people watching. It's a very family orientated place. Everywhere you go people have their coolers (or chilly bins as they call it here), parked on the narrowest roads, and sitting on the steepest hills, all taking in the nice spring weather and sunshine. And of course there are many people ... read more

I know, I know, I'm still in bloody Auckland but this place is like a black hole - escape is near impossible. There is good news on the event horizon though because Adam has finally arrived! HURRAH. I dont know if I've explained, but Adam is an old mate from Uni, who I did the great Lands End to John O'Groats bike ride with me many, many moons ago. He's in the middle of a year travelling and happens to be spending a month in NZ at precisely the same time as me, and is up for hiring a car to get around, which should save us money and give us a bit of freedom. Anyway, he arrived at the hostel 2 days ago looking like the Wild Man of Bourneo, (whoever that is?!), with a ... read more

A blog cant get more up-to-date than this.... Today I faced my fear of heights and won. I ascended the tallest building in the southern hemisphere and after having a look around, instead of taking the lift down, I decided to go outside and jump. Later on I climbed up again, donned a harness and climbed up the inside of the mast to the 'crows nest', a hundred metres above where most people get to. I never thought I'd get to do either of these things. The idea of clambering around on the top of a tall building, on the wrong side of the glass, has always been the stuff of nightmares and morbid fascination for me. I can tell you with no doubt at all that that standing on a ledge 300m above the ground, ... read more

(Entry by Gemma) Well, we have been in New Zealand for 3 weeks, how time flies. We are back in Auckland now which is where we started 3 weeks ago. We flew in on friday 30th September and spent our first two nights in a hostel in Auckland. I must admit, the first few days in New Zealand weren't that great, it was nothing to do with the country, but i think it just took time to settle into somewhere new and get used to the drop in temperature compared to Australia. I think the main reason was that we had lots of sorting out to do and had to work out how our budget was going to stretch to renting a car which is the best way to see the country, that is after a ... read more

We got a van!!!!!!! Thursday (20th) we found a van we liked, negotiated the price, got it checked out by the mechanic, then negotiated the price and got it knocked down further for the price of the repairs that needed to doing. So we were going to get it the day after. After spending the whole day there, don't know how!, we went to get a late lunch at one of the many food courts that sell Japanese, chinese, Malay, Indian, Mongolian, Turkish food and many more and we had a curry, very nice. Friday (21st) spoke to the owner of the hostel who put worries in our minds. It just so happened there are several mechanics staying at the hostel so we met the guys whos van it is and we drove it to our ... read more

It's finally a nice sunny day here in Auckland after 3 days of dark, cloudy skies. I woke up to hear the gulls making some noise, so I figured it was nice weather. Yesterday was interesting. I found an ad for a local car market, and figured I'd walk and check it out. Well, cars were either junk with bondo on them, or they were too expensive. I spoke with a man who was selling a station wagon (yes, they're still making them over here) He was selling it for $1600 NZ dollars seemed in good shape except for the broken mirror, cobwebs on the car, no working radio or interior lights. He told me this story about how he just had a reconditioned engine and transmission in the car. Well, call me not stupid, but ... read more

Today has been pretty much a day of getting some business done. Today I opened a mailbox at a local travelers service place. I need that so I can have my bank statements and it's also necessary for when I buy a car, hopefully, maybe tomorrow. There's a Car Fair that goes on here every Saturday morning. I opened up a bank accoutn with Bank of New Zealand today also, and that felt really good. What's really nice down here is that fact that there are people who are called ambassadors that walk up and down the main streets here, and I think they're Maori. They are basically there to help you, if you have any questions about Auckland. I had to find a local grocery store to buy some things and they were quite friendly. ... read more

Had a lovely, lazy time doing absolutely nothing over the past days. Well, I did a little trip across the bay to Devonport yesterday, and went out with some girls - Helen and Sinade - for fish and chips the night before last, but apart from that it's been perfectly vacant! Saying that, I am starting to get a bit stir crazy, and although there are loads of gallaries around here that I've been perusing, (with some stunning stuff), and I even popped in the Uni to see a variety of musical performances, (including a stunning solo by an angelic mezzo soprano from Schumann's Frauenliebe und Leben), I'm dying for Adam to get here so we can have a large, (and much needed), piss up then finally get on the road! His flight gets in tonight ... read more

Ahh, holidays! here we are in New Zealand for 7 weeks of intense relaxing and discovery...We started with Auckland where we landed on Wednesday 13th October. We stayed in a campsite by the beach for the first 2 days (Takapuna), in NorthShore, with Rangitoto island volcano greeting us every morning across the waters of the Hauraki gulf. The sunshine also made an appearance for our walks along the beach, nice part of Auckland! We then caught up with my friends Neville and Loretta who live in Northcote and they showed us around - Mount Eden and One Tree Hill in Auckland. We also headed to Murawai on the West Coast, dark volcanic sands, strong surf and green hills. We have now reached Paihia in the Bay of Islands in Northland (North of Auckland) from where we'll ... read more

Well it's only 1 day to go!!! It's been the most freaky 2 weeks you could ever imagine. Our trip was looming ever closer, and then to add extra pressure, we decided to add in 'House Buying' to the mix! Yep, we bought our apartment so at least when we come home, we'll be coming home to our very own home. Huge thanks to Brett (Adam's Dad) for helping us make this possible. Dinner last night at Jule's folks, Rene's amazing Roast Chicken, I know I'm going to miss that for the next month! Rene and Evan were kind enough to give us a special present which will help us out along the way while we are there, thank you so much! Grant and Greer came over last night, they will be looking after our apartment ... read more
