Woke up during the night but went back to sleep on my own. I guess it’s the nice Hyatt bed! We walked down to the pier and went to the Department of Conservation (DOC) office. The lady there was very helpful and suggested that we try to base ourselves at a camp ground and take day walks instead of always having to break down and set up camp every day. We walked around downtown, which is very hilly and realized what bad shape we are in to be heading out on hikes. I figure we should be in pretty good shape after four months of walking and hiking. Picked up a bus timetable at the bus station so we can decide how many hours we need to buy on our bus pass. Scoped out the grocery ... read more

Well, I think I’ve had about all the time I need in Auckland now (tonight will be my fifth night) and so I’ve booked a coach to travel north to a place called Paihia, which is near the Bay of Islands for three nights in a chalet by the beach. The Youth Hostel that I have been staying in in Auckland is great with excellent cooking facilities and lots of friendly travellers . I wasn’t expecting to be eating beans on toast,( I bought the beans as someone else had a loaf) and playing Boggle within my first day of being here, and what a fab introduction to New Zealand to go to a rugby game, start chatting to a local and be given 2 tickets for another game!! It feels very damp in this city ... read more

We got up and had breakfast, then got ready to fly to Auckland. Michael wanted to find an internet café so we went to the airport around noon. Michael used the internet to make fantasy football changes (we are 17 hours ahead of the US) and I sat around reading. We are bored with Fiji and anxious to get to NZ. Flight to Auckland was uneventful and dinner on airplane was good. We got to Auckland, took a taxi to the Hyatt and went to bed right away. ... read more

Greetings from Auckland! After what seemed like days on airplanes and in airports (in reality only 30 hours plus one crossing of the date line) we're here in New Zealand. Not much to report yet. The people here are all very nice and efficient, and everything is very clean. And apparently they don't have fat people here. More news later, after we've had an adventure or two. xoxo Geri and Brian ... read more

Well hello there from a new country - New Zealand incase you didnt see the top bit. Well what have I been up to since I Left Brisbane. Will tell you in a bit after what I did on my last day in Brissy. Firstly I went to the art gallery and museum. The former to be avoided during any Queensland holidays or schoolies. I unfortunately went on 'Toddler Tuesday' and discovered how much noise Toddlers can make in a small space. From there I moved on to the consortium, not v interesting you may think but inside was a treat for all gay men everywhere - An exhibition on Kylie's Dresses, not all of them as there are over 300! Before she got ill she donated all of her outfits to the Kylie Collection which ... read more

Had a fairly chilled day yesteday, walked out to the harbour bridge and out across to the middle of it (Don't think I need to do Cromer Pier now Dad!) Then went up the Sky Tower in the afternoon for some wicked 360 views of the city. Then sat in the highest cafe in the Southern Hemisphere and watched Liverpool v. Man utd. Wish I'd known it was nil nil before I started watching! Last day today :( But I do get to come back and see everyone :) and then go to uni! :) Going to take a ferry out to Waiheke Island today because it's meant be really pretty and nice beaches etc! Hi guys , Dave here - well we arrived in Aukland - another 5 star HOSTEL! note superman senior that thats not the same as a 5 star hotel, it just means you get a bit more for you 8 pounds a night - like a clean toilet for instance. Anyway it was a nice day and i thought to myself 'why not go and throw myself of the highest tower in NZ i mean whats the worst that could happen?????'. So i did a base jump of the Sky tower.........twice. Pretty amazing experience and after watching spiderman the night before i now know how my childhood hero feels!? Id say the worst part is the first step off the platform, after that its a one way ticket with a great view. Gem manage to take ... read more

Hi there all Well it's Friday morning for us, now recovered from the jet lag. Both Helena and I have been having some very weird moments, such as waking up in the middle of the night (lunch time in the UK) even though not hungry, trying not to fall asleep during the day and feeling very much like drunks due to tiredness! Luckily that is all past now and our body clocks have adjusted to Kiwi time! The hostel is in a camden-town-esque area with a high punk and street culture scene. Auckland city central is about 2miles square, surrounded by acres of suburbs. It has the feel of most Ports, being slightly rough around the edges but very alive and vibrant. Colonial Architecture meets American fast food and Asian skyscrapers is the best description I ... read more

Good evening all! We have arrived in New Zealand, Auckland! The weather is spring like, slightly damp in the air but comfortable (not cold!) The flight was crazy, left the UK at 4.00pm Sunday, arrived here Tuesday at 5.15am! Crossing time zones all over the place, we were finger-printed in LA, along with everyone else; while the plane was refuelled. However we did get free Tea and snacks. The trip added up like this: 10.00am leave sunny Ashford, 4.00pm leave UK = 10hr flight. 2hr stop over in LA. 15 hr flight to Auckland. 2hr bus ride on shuttle bus to hostel (crazy taxi driver!), due to heavy traffic in the city. We have both decided that we wouldn't want to stop over for a night in LA, as it would have made it far longer, ... read more
