Hello from Ponsonby Road! Caitlin and I have moved on from the Fat Camel. It was nice but kind of a sterile environment that was trying too hard to be the Real World. Imagine living in those trendy IKEA rooms... not the most homey feel. We've moved on to a suburb just west of Auckland called Ponsonby. We're at the Ueneke (?) Lodge right on the strip of cafes, nightclubs, bars and cute little boutiques. It's a yuppie neighborhood so I feel pretty lucky for this prime real estate for only NZ$20 bucks a night. The biggest plus is there is FREE PARKING for our newest travelling companion. Introducing..... CHIPPY! Our mint green (haha, mint chip?) 1984 Honda City is a 2 door, tiny little car complete with fold down hatchback style seats, a tiny little ... read more

we arrived in auckland early yesterday. meesh and i spent the day getting oriented in the city. we checked in where it was required and finished our paperwork for jobs we might get somewhere down the road....then we walked and walked and walked and walked. we ended up atop the skytower which affords a panoramic view of this city surrounded by ocean. in reality our day was uneventful, just all so new. refreshing is the right word i think. auckland cannot possibly overload one's senses, it can simply and patiently stimulate them. even test driving a car on the left side of the road didn't scare me....it would have anywhere else. meesh and i were both amazed at the aura of the city. for me it is a drastic change from the pace and feel ... read more

We are now getting very excited and busy as we try to get everything done that needs to be done until we go to the Columbus airport on Thursday afternoon. We are leaving a beautiful Fall with all the trees in bright colors to go down to what looks like wonderful Spring weather. Chrissy got her okay from the doctor last week and a haircut today. So, she's ready. I have two wonderful friends who will keep Chateau Linens and try to keep up with Roesweld Equipment for us. Got to go pack. ... read more

Greetings from Godzone (God's own country)! Cait and I landed in Auckland yesterday morning. We're at the Fat Camel hostel in downtown. Lots of young backpackers, loud colorful decor and clean, if impersonal. We've already done so much in just two days. The Sky Tower is the tallest point in the Southern Hemisphere at 382 meters (? Not sure about that fact.) We've seen at least half a dozen people jump off it! On Monday, Cameron Dias jumped off! They attach you to cables and you have a controlled fall for about 12 seconds. Parnell Road is filled with cafes, a GREAT chocolate boutique, restaurants and craft stores. Queen Street is the downtown with courtyards of Asian food stands, tall buildings, designer stores and the only apartment buildings we've seen here in Auckland (everyone owns houses). ... read more

I'm really doing a happy dance right now. I finally found a vehicle for myself. After a very frustrating week of visiting backpacker car lots, I saw an ad in the paper for a car lot located in Mount Wellington. Mt. Wellington is about a 40 minute bus ride north of the city. I happened to stumble upon a 1994 Toyota Hiace (sorry I have no pictures at the moment). It was like the clouds parted and a sunbeam shone right on it! It's white, 2.0L, diesel (gas here is 1.30/ltre, diesel is 90c/litre), with 200,000 kms on it. It was used as a vehicle for an older electrician. It's great, it's a clean slate for me to do what I want with. Not like yukky vans that have been owned by who knows how many ... read more

Wagons Ho! We picked up the car, (a crappy silver Nissan with a worrying built-in symphony of clicks, whirs and clunks), and headed up north to Pahia, (which for some unknown reason you have to pronounce like a war cry - PRRRAAAAAIIIIEEEEEEEAAAAA), stopping at Centrabury Lodge after spotting an offer for free kayak hire. The water was quite choppy, and it'd been ages since I'd last kayaked, but we soon got the hand of it and were zooming around the beautiful bay of islands, dodging the rocks, ferries and speed boats. This place is really amazing - the horizon is dotted with stunning collections of small, wild uninhabited islands, one of which we landed on and I proclaimed as the Principality of Rickland, where the first Pugil Tennis competition ever in the world took place. ... read more

It’s the end of a long weekend here in NZ. While many of you were back at school celebrating Homecoming (so sad I missed it!), it was Labour Day weekend here, so Monday was a day off. For me that meant taking a day off from doing pretty much nothing anyway. But more on Monday later. As I said in last week’s entry, I planned on going to a rugby game on Friday and watching a surf competition on Saturday. But rain Friday night drowned out the rugby game plan so I stayed in. My back up plan was to go to the “Best of Fashion Week” show down at Viaduct, but that plan also got ditched when all the tickets were sold out. Oh well, I didn’t have the right shoes anyway. So I spent ... read more

A bright sunny morning here in Auckland. Yesterday I spent the day with my new bunkmate Sarah, from the UK, and we went to a nice beach outside of Auckland called Mission Bay. It seems there's a great epidemic going on here, and it's called Ice Cream. I saw that they had a Movenpick there in Mission Bay, and the lineup was about 2 blocks long. New Zealanders love their ice cream. I layed out on the beach for a couple of hours, and enjoyed the people watching. It's a very family orientated place. Everywhere you go people have their coolers (or chilly bins as they call it here), parked on the narrowest roads, and sitting on the steepest hills, all taking in the nice spring weather and sunshine. And of course there are many people ... read more

I know, I know, I'm still in bloody Auckland but this place is like a black hole - escape is near impossible. There is good news on the event horizon though because Adam has finally arrived! HURRAH. I dont know if I've explained, but Adam is an old mate from Uni, who I did the great Lands End to John O'Groats bike ride with me many, many moons ago. He's in the middle of a year travelling and happens to be spending a month in NZ at precisely the same time as me, and is up for hiring a car to get around, which should save us money and give us a bit of freedom. Anyway, he arrived at the hostel 2 days ago looking like the Wild Man of Bourneo, (whoever that is?!), with a ... read more

A blog cant get more up-to-date than this.... Today I faced my fear of heights and won. I ascended the tallest building in the southern hemisphere and after having a look around, instead of taking the lift down, I decided to go outside and jump. Later on I climbed up again, donned a harness and climbed up the inside of the mast to the 'crows nest', a hundred metres above where most people get to. I never thought I'd get to do either of these things. The idea of clambering around on the top of a tall building, on the wrong side of the glass, has always been the stuff of nightmares and morbid fascination for me. I can tell you with no doubt at all that that standing on a ledge 300m above the ground, ... read more
