I'm Sadie the cleaning lady.... Well after spending the evening in the camp laundry (with some strange South African dude who had lots of great fishing stories!) I thought I would treat myself to a cuppa hot chocolate, only to spill the full cup over the carpet and lounge seats! (should have stuck to white wine). Back to the laundry today to wash the pile of towels I had used to clean up my mess! This morning we set off early after a not so promising weather forecast. Walked down the beach (no not the 50km walk to the mouth of the Kaipara Harbour) then headed to the Gannet Colony. Monday 13th January, 2014. Drive to Auckland, North Island, New Zealand. We left Dargaville and continued our drive along the north west coast the North Island. We headed for a pinnacle called Tokatoka Peak that we had seen in the Dargaville blurb. We could see it clearly from the road but continued on and turned up to the start of the walking track. The scenery was very boring (we couldn't see the peak anymore) and it was a steep climb. We decided we had bigger fish to fry, so we returned to the road and drove back to where we had some good views of the peak and took some photos before continuing on our way. Ben en Shane waren superhosts. Niet alleen verwenden ze ons met lekker eten, ze hebben ons ook meegenomen naar de kust. De westkust bestaat hier niet uit prachtige witte stranden en palmbomen, maar uit kliffen, woeste begroeiing en zwart zand. En hoe beter te ontdekken dan via een lange wandeling met Ben, Shane en hun Amerikaanse vriend Andy. Veerle's voetjes dachten daar helaas iets anders over. Na 2,5 uur wandelen ontdekte zij bij de lunch dat 4 blaren de weg hadden weten te vinden naar haar voetjes, waarop zij (heldhaftig als ze is - ik schrijf dit zelf dus totaal niet overdreven) haar schoenen bij Dirk-Jaap in de rugzak deed en op blote voeten verder ging. Nog vergeten te zeggen in ons vorig verslag dat we één van de laatste dagen dat we in Auckland waren Yvonne bezocht hebben in Bethells Beach. Dat was de voorlaatste dag (onze vrije dag trouwens) bij de HelpX hosts in Waiatarua. We hebben een hele leuke dag met haar en haar man Philip meegemaakt. Ze wonen op 10 minuten rijden van een bekend strand daar in de buurt. Ook wonen ze tenmidden in het bos en achter hen is een natuurdomein. Het enige nadeel aan het wonen aan een natuurdomein is dat als je wil bouwen of verbouwen op je land of om het even wat wil doen moet toestemming vragen aan de gemeente. Bijvoorbeeld voor: bomen omhakken of een struik snoeien of broadband internet aanleggen. Het internet heeft 9 jaar geduurd vooraleer ze de vergunning ... read more

Hello, family and friends. We leave on our huge adventure in a couple of days. We are both very very excited. We decided to start a travel blog so all those interested could keep track of what we are up to and see our latest pics, so we will try and keep it updated as often as possible. Trix is very excited about spending time with my parents and her best pal Cassie for three months.
