Oct 31 "Save the Whales, Eat the Japanese" - on a t-shirt I saw on one of the customers yesterday. I've got nothing against the Japanese (except the ones who poach whales), but that's goddamn funny. I've been in New Zealand now for a week, but it seems like so much longer. I've done a lot, seen a lot, and met a lot of people. My first international flight was much less arduous than I thought; twelve hours on a plane and I managed to sleep for the first eight or so (with the help of Xanax). NZ time is 17 hours ahead of US Eastern time so I lost almost a day when I arrived. At customs, you're required to show your passport, explain to them why you're in New Zealand, how long you plan ... read more

Hello all!! Sorry about the lack of video, I can't get it to upload! Since i last wrote I did a long hike in the Tongariro National park called the Tongariro Crossing. It is a full day hike across a volcano - very exciting! Firstly I have to say I have been so lucky with the weather in New Zealand and the Tongariro Crossing completes my trip. The walk began quite rocky and flat and cold, but I soon warmed up on the Devil's staircase which takes you to the bottom of Mount Ngauruhoe (or Mount Doom if you have seen Lord of the Rings). I now know why it is called the Devil's staircase, as it was a real mission to get up - 45 minutes of climbing stairs!! However, well worth it when you ... read more

It had been a long time between visits to my beloved home country, but I still managed to take Ursula to New Zealand in the same decade I left... just. We arrived at Auckland airport on the morning of December 31st 2009. We immediately made a bee-line to Auckland's one universal spiritual focal point: the café. We managed to stop for breakfast 500 metres short of my mother's house - who I haven't seen for eighteen months - so that I could experience the primal joy that only a well-made coffee and an eggs benedict could possible engender. Ah... home. Now that my mother lives in Titirangi, in West Auckland, I am by genetic association a "westie". This means I wear tight black jeans and have a penchant for heavy metal and big dogs. Ursula and ... read more

It's a sunny Sunday so it's time to head to the beach. I had actually written on our calendar "Day Out!!!" a few days back so we were doing something if it killed me. Yes the usual picnic was packed. We were only heading to West Auckland which meant less than an hours drive so that meant hubby could watch his football match in the morning first. Poor thing has been suffering actually as he has to get up early to watch his matches, he is and always will be a firm Inter Milan supporter! There are a few beaches in West Auckland that we want to check out and we decided on Bethell's Beach today. When we arrived at the carpark we were shocked to see that it was already full! Thankfully on arrival at ... read more

Saturday 28th - Sunday 29th April 2009 My lovely fellow Scot Lisa and I decided to hire a car and try out our camping gear ahead of our big easter road trip last weekend. We didn't go far but you don't have to go far out of the city here to get the amazing scenery so we opted for the West Coach surf beach Muriwai - about 45 mins drive from Auckland. It was a nice drive through the usual hills, farms, vineyards etc and the beach was HUGE with black sand and lots of nice surfer types. We tried to fein coolness in our wetsuits and on the body board but we couldn't quite get passed 'lukewarm' with our constant giggling and shouts of "Wheeeeeeeeeee" I don't think we impressed any surfers at all and ... read more

A year and a half ago, we started to plan a humble trip that was supposed to take us to visit relatives and friends. That small trip ended up being a full round the world journey, touching 6 continents and reaching over 20 countries! The plan is the following: Australia (just a couple of hours in the airport though!), Thailand, China (Hong Kong only), India, Nepal, Jordan (airport again) Egypt, Spain, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, England, USA (NYC and LA) Mexico, Chile (airport twice) and finally Argentina before going back to the beginning in Auckland, NZ. Thinking of you people, and how to make this amazing trip a little part of you too, that's how we came to write this blog, where we can reach everybody without having to write ... read more

So! We are here in Auckland! We stayed at a hotel last night and met our new flatmates this morning! They don't mind that we are staying short term and have already found a guy who can move in the day we leave and stay for a few months. Stephanie and her boyfriend Daniel are our age, as well as their other flatmate who in some ways reminds me of Rob! We miss you, Rob! They are really easy to get along with, and we have already met both of their families and most of their friends. We just got back from the most amazing dinner with Daniel's family! All the women worked for a catering service at one point or another in their lives. It was even better than the Turkish food we found in ... read more

Jack is very pleased with himself. Apparently the gun comment gave you all heart attacks. The email address we are checking the most is zweberj@augsburg.edu if anyone wants to send us emails. We are in Auckland now, ready to wake up tomorrow and meet the temporary flatmates! As always, we will let you know how it goes!... read more
