Most of day 5 was spent setting up the scaffolding. Mike gave us a ½ day because it was a Saturday. Mike suggested we go to Pi Hua Beach in the Northwest of Auckland. The views of Green Bay (New Zealand not the Wisconsin one) were just awesome. Our wonderful drivers Kirk and Bill had some interesting turns through the mountains to get there. We climbed Lion Rock and strolled the black sand beach. On the way back we stopped at quaint overlook restaurant called The Elevation that had scenic view of Auckland proper. After a long day we came back to the motel and went to our Lebonese owned cowboy restaurant The Stampede (execellent food). One of the construction workers from the build site was nice enough to meet us for diner. Paul was also ... read more

Torbay is one of many 'bays' on the eastern North Shore above Auckland's main hub, and it has a quiet, comfortable feel about it - for those keen aficionados of 70s UK comedy, there is no hint of a Basil Fawlty or anyone resembling him in this particular 'Torbay'. I am in sleepy Torbay for the foreseeable future, and better weather is now well on its way following treachorous winter conditions that apparently claimed a house in some sort of landslip incident in the local area, back in August. Although I'd heard at an earlier point in time that the building in question was in Torbay, I thought nothing of it when I was busy house-hunting in various suburbs a couple of weeks back, but astonishingly the road in which I now live is, in fact, ... read more

Polly: To anyone thinking of visiting New Zealand, I would strongly recommend a trip to the west coast of South America (or Canada perhaps) on the way - it totally sorts out the whole jet-lag thing. We took off from Santiago at 10:45pm on the 26th September, had a few beverages over the Pacific Ocean, then slept for about 7 hours. We landed in Auckland, 13 hours later at 4:45am (the clocks changed that morning) on the 28th. Apart from losing a day of my life, which is still puzzling me, we were almost in sync with NZ time, we just needed to resist the urge to nap at about 4pm and push on through. It really was quite civilised! We got a shuttle bus & rolled up at Becky & Tom's at about 6:30am. Becky, ... read more

The Mad scramble. Our newly acquired unemployment status went from a blissful surrealism, to careful planning as the list of Must Dos looked daunting and days were in short supply. With one day to go, Cousie Katherine attained Sainthood through voluntary service to the impending empoverished/ unwashed. Muchos gracias!!! I have never seen my dear wife so happy - in intermissions between throwing out, storing, selling, and of course close to tears leaving our little clean house behind under cover of darkness in a car (that we are trying to sell) running on three cylinders due to a last minute fault caused by a potential buyers mechanical inspection... And the last night with Darlene, Warrick, Mia, 2 cats. It is all feeling remarkably unreal, and the company is most welcome. Benj (at 3am) on the possession ... read more
