11th April I had a lovely birthday . I got to speak to Dan and Jonathan and Sophie and the children, Mani sang Happy birthday to me and Cassie gave me a smile- aahh! We went out for a lovely meal at a restaurant called Vinyl in Whangerei, recommended by the campsite proprietor and a good choice it was too. We stayed near Paihia in the Bay of Islands for 3 nights near the Huhu falls in a fabulous campsite that was almost empty. We went to Waitanga which is the place where the Treaty between the British and the Maori was signed in 1842. They have restored the governor’s house where it took place and we spent some time there learning about the situation which made this treaty possible to the benefit of both the ... read more

Since our arrival back in Auckland we have occupied much of our time with live music at The Bunker, a folk club venue on Mount Victoria in Devonport, which is near the marina at Bayswater and in Ponsonby, another suburb of Auckland. In addition we've been spending our days at the Auckland Traditional Boatbuilding School where we're finishing off a clinker dinghy. The purchase of the said vessel came about after discussions with our friends John and Judy Salthouse, whose boatyard built Marnie in 1985. Judy's brother, Robert, runs the boatbuilding school at Hobsonville Airfield and on meeting with him he advised that the original dinghy to accompany Marnie was built by Snow Waters, a now deceased local dinghy builder who had been their next door neighbour for many years. Coincidentally, the last dinghy he'd been ... read more

A fews days driving through wonderful high desert landscape through Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos, displaying the terracotta coloured adobe housing landscape and cactus galore. We had a great time in these towns, which were fascinating in that most of the inhabitants were artists and musicians providing lovely entertainment. A short, turbulent flight to Silver City for a week on a dude ranch called Double E, a working cattle ranch. Here the cowboy spirit was able to surface as we penned calves, did mounted shooting and explored canyons and high desert land on horseback. Within hours of arrival we donned our hats, dusters and boots and were ready to round up cattle. The last few days were spent back in Oakland near San Francisco. Time in Alcatraz, San Francisco - for those who have visions of ... read more

Yes, that's right! Auckland. It's not a surprise to most, but it would be to my parents. I decided to make a detour back to NZ (which had been the plan all along) for my Dad's 60th birthday. And despite the years I took off my families' lives from the shock, I would say it was a very successful trip. So I flew back into bright blue skies in Auckland and met Cam who had come to pick me up (thanks again mate!) and he dropped me off at Leah's (thanks again as well!) where I would be hiding out for three days until my Dad's birthday. Of course the first thing I did was head to the beach via the bakery. Mince and Cheese pie and L&P! Quality Kiwi cuisine. The water was fantastic as ... read more

Browns Bay, Rangitoto, Retail Therapy, Rothesay Bay & Graham's 52nd, Bay of Islands, Westgate, City, Browns Bay, Poker night and hangover Friday, DVD night, cricket, Miranda, Piha. Right guys wlecome to a whistle stop blog of all our ongoings since the New Year. We saw the New Year in in a British run pub, good times. The first day of 2009 we spent lying on the beach at Browns Bay, we're not gonna be doing that again anytime soon! I expect in the UK we would have been nursing hangovers and sat infront of the fire trying to keep warm with a dominos. So yeah was awesome to be sitting on the beach, with Jayn and her friends and then back to Marion and John's for a barbie where eeryone brings 'a plate'. Basically meaning everyone ... read more

Today we had a trip to Devonport. Devonport is a pleasant little suburb of Auckland and home of the New Zealand Navy. You can actually see it from our window, but it's some distance by road, as you have to cross the Waitemata Harbour Bridge to get there. The easiest way to get there is by ferry from the Auckland waterfront. They run every half hour or so, and it takes about 10 minutes to get across. Devonport has a distinctive shape, it's a sort of peninsula, with two volcanic mounds, Mount Victoria at one end, and North Head at the other, jutting out into the gulf like a giant brassiere. (Trust him to think of that, I hear you say, but that really is the best way to describe it!) Once there, it's like a ... read more

I did the free tour with Straytravel today. They picked us up at 10:30 from the bar at the Fat Camel. Worm was our tourguide, he is Canadian, but was quite funny. Riwi rode shotgun, he is from up in Northland somewhere. And yes they did think we had wild animals as pets! First stop was the Sky Tower, one of the girls in our group won a Sky Jump & she nearly wet herself! Next stop was the Michael Savage Memorial Park, & Bastion Point in Mision Bay. There is some nice house ot there along Tamaki Drive. Next up was Mount Eden, a volcanic crater near Manakau. There was some spectacular views of the city and surrounds from there. Also found a big compas that shows you how far you are from home (12180km) ... read more

Today we went for a hike in Long Bay in the marine reserve, what a stunningly beautiful place! The beach is about 1km long, packed with people cause it was such a beautiful day. The bay is really beautiful, you can see the islands on the horison. There were sail boats, speed boats, & cruise ships lolling around the bay. The walk was quite exhausting even though it was just a couple of km's & I realized I'm a bit out of shape, huffing & puffing up the rises along the cliffs! We passed the nude beach, it's a bit of a sausage fest. I only saw one woman on the whole beach & she was a bit matured, shall we say. We sat down on the beach after the hike, just looking out over the ... read more

I'm currently staying with Nicol & Melanie Smit in Browns Bay. I'm loving NZ, it's such a family orientated place. There's so much to do with u r kids (if u have any). The people are really friendly & very helpfull. We spent yesterday in town at the Xmas Parade, it was a tons of fun. There were classic cars, boats, stalls, ice cream on the beach, boat races an airshow & the coast guard even did a mock rescue with the seahawk choper. We even had a boerie on a piece of bread! We had a braai with Lizel & Arno, Nicol & Melanie's friends who live in Torbay. We had a typical SA braai. Chops, wors & braai broodjies. It was awesome, a little piece of home! Were going hiking in the Long Bay ... read more
