A four-hour flight from Auckland took us to the tiny island of Raratonga one of the 15 Cook Islands in the South Pacific. It had been suggested that we could stopover in Tahiti, which was exciting enough, but on researching, the Cook Islands seem to have better reviews. We landed in pouring rain, not very tropical, but we had a warm welcome, first a singer with ukulele (we later found out he had been welcoming, and seeing off people for 30 years!) then a flower necklace put around our necks. For the first time since we left, we will in the staying in the same place for a whole week, 8 days to be precise. Although we left New Zealand on Saturday, because we travelled across the international dateline, we arrived on Friday - how cool ... read more

Geo: -21.2318, -159.763Today is a day Mom is going to enjoy. Her favorite thing is boats and we are going out in the lagoon on a glass bottom boat. A note left on our door last night by our Cruise Critic organizer indicates that there will be no snorkeling on this outing. That's odd. I have the website info and it specifically references swimming and snorkeling. We're wearing our swim suits anyway. Rarotonga, located just inside the Tropic of Capricorn, is the vibrant capital of the Cook Islands in the South Pacific. The central mass of this island, often referred to as the jewel of the Pacific, is the eroded remains of a volcanic pyramid whose crags now form jungle-covered peaks and ridges ideal for hiking and caving. With our island time limited, we chose to ... read more

Hi everyone, still have some wi-fi time left, (wish I had more), just to give a brief history on how many Cook Islands there are. There are 15 altogether, 6 in the Northern group and the rest in the Southern group, where we are staying and visited yesterday. The islands in the Northern group are harder to get to, they are quite isolated and have very few visitors due to the distance and infrequency of transport. For instance Manihki is where they have the black pearl farms and it takes 4 hours on a plane to get there. Unbelievable !! A round trip to the northern group takes around 2 weeks, there are 2 vessels that travel between Rarotonga and the outer islands but you have to bring you're own food and share accomodation with other ... read more

Oceania » Cook Islands » Aitutaki April 12th 2015

Hi everyone, had a fantastic day yesterday (well everyday is like that !) but this was great, we made the painful decision to go to another island, the catch is, you can only get to these other places by planes !! Oh yes, back to that one again, so we put our brave heads on and booked to go to Aitutaki which was a 40 minute plane journey away. Ok, 40 minutes isn't long but it is if you're scared !! We got picked up very very early, except that I was awake at 04.30 because the Rooster started yelling !! We were met at the airport by the guide called Paul where we met the other parties. Onto the airstrip we went, quivering might I add !! Didn't even go through security, got a ticket ... read more

Hi everyone, it's very relaxing here as you can imagine, yesterday afternoon we caught the local bus to the night market at Muri. Now there are only two local buses, one is called 'Anti-Clockwise' and the other is called 'Clockwise', well to begin with, we both couldn't get our heads round it, we had the map of the island, turning it this way and that way, the lady who runs the bungalows was watching us, thinking, how on earth did these two get here !!! Well, we have now gone around the island all the way on the bus which costs 8 dollars (NZ) each, doesn't matter how long you're on there, that's what it costs. They are the same two drivers, so they now know where we have to get off as they don't seem ... read more

Hi blog-followers, sorry for the delay, working out how to get wi-fi !!! Yes we are in the COOK ISLANDS, soooooo lovely, on an island called Rarotonga. We left NZ on Tuesday night, flight took 3 1/2 hours, arrived at 2.0O am to rain, absolutely pouring. The chap who picked us up at the airport said it would be fine and we are in day two and it has been sooooo hot, in its 90's. We have a bungalow just by the beach, and we have a pool, our own kitchen, bathroom and sitting area, it really is very nice, everyone is friendly and happy. We have chickens and cockerels which wake us up, so I just put in my ear plugs, really don't want to get up at 5.00 am !!! We lazed around all ... read more

Oceania » Cook Islands » Rarotonga December 2nd 2014

Arrived in Rarotonga the day before we left, having crossed the international date line mid flight. Yes we are now official time travellers! This totally confused us, having had a Wednesday, then left NZ on Thursday, landed on another Wednesday then having another Thursday. It was a long week! After a rather turbulent flight we were gutted to find the weather was very warm but misty grey and raining and had been for a few days. We hadn't come all this way for warm rain! But we were soon smiling as the airport was full of the sound of tropical music being played and we were greeted with a fragrant lei for each of us. Some looked better with flowers around their necks than others. By lunch time the next day however the weather brightened up ... read more

(This blog covers the whole 2 weeks of our stay in Rarotonga, since the Wifi was too expensive to keep uploading data and pictures there) The flight from LA to Rarotonga was about 11 hours overnight. I invested in one of those semicircular neck pillows at LA airport, and using this, the long flight was not too bad at all. Arriving at Rarotonga island was exciting. As we flew in we could see this picture postcard tropical island surrounded by a coral reef through the window. The whole island was lush and green and mountainous in the interior. Immediately after clearing customs we were greeted by the pre arranged airport transport driver, who threw a garland of flowers over each of our necks, before bringing us over to the waiting minibus. There were 2 other couples ... read more

Geo: -21.2318, -159.763The last two days we have been totally occupied by the Athletics. On Wednesday the day began in an overcast way. After breakfast caught the 10am bus to the track as I was running the Junior Men's and Women's High Jump at 12pm. This was a good event and we only had a few showers during it, not like the driving rain from last night. Our Jumps team has a mixture of Australians, Kiwis and Cook Islanders and everyone is friendly and flexible in what they can do. Then at 2pm we officiated at the Heptathlon Long Jump. Another event which ran smoothly. It is great to see a variety of Islanders here .We had Tahitians, New Guineans, Fijians as well as competitors from Australia and NZ.Once that was finished I had lunch and ... read more

Geo: -21.2318, -159.763On Monday morning we had a couple of hours with the car we had hired. We drove into Avarua and looked into a couple of the souvenir shops. There was very little there to buy but we did get a couple of wrap-around skirts for the little girls. We then took the car back to the resort. I did stop and take a photo of the very low key Parliament building. After lunch at the Edgewater we took the bus to the stadium for a meeting for all technical officials. This allowed us to meet our fellow officials and inspect the sites on which we will be operating for the next three days. After an hour or so there we returned to the resort. The highlight today was the Opening Ceremony of the Championships. This was ... read more
