Hi everyone, had a fantastic day yesterday (well everyday is like that !) but this was great, we made the painful decision to go to another island, the catch is, you can only get to these other places by planes !! Oh yes, back to that one again, so we put our brave heads on and booked to go to Aitutaki which was a 40 minute plane journey away. Ok, 40 minutes isn't long but it is if you're scared !! We got picked up very very early, except that I was awake at 04.30 because the Rooster started yelling !! We were met at the airport by the guide called Paul where we met the other parties. Onto the airstrip we went, quivering might I add !! Didn't even go through security, got a ticket like a bus ticket !!! Well, pleasantly surprised, miniature aeroplane seemed bigger, it was a Saab 340. Comon you plane spotters, you must know what one of those are like !! It wasn't a Jumbo, but OK, at least you had an aisle !! Couldn't swing a cat around it, but not bad. Off we go, Stu looking a bit tense, I wasn't much better
myself but hey ho, we were up in the air and in no time landing, so all in all we were fine, even though we both mentioned still gotta go back again !! So off we go onto a bus but it was more like a truck with a cover over it !! Paul took us on a tour of Aitutaki which took all of 10 minutes, passing a house on the way, where a lady waves to the tourists everyday, she is 103 years old, No Really, that's what Paul said. We then got onto our boat and headed off to sea, well I cannot explain this place (Google it) beautiful turquoise water and white sand and Palm trees, Bounty advert, many years ago comes to mind !! And it was hot and very hot but with a nice breeze from the boat (are you there yet ? In you're imaginations !! ). Paul the guide wanted to know where we were all from and continuously took the mickey out of us the entire trip, he was so funny, had us in stitches !! We were Mr and Mrs UK and then he kept calling Stu Mr Universe !!
(Yes as I said, he was taking the mickey out of us all day! ) We were seated with some Aussies who were moving to England for the 2nd time, another english girl who treated herself to a holiday in Bora Bora, said she only lived once !! Another family all the way from Leicester, yep can you believe booking the South Pacific Islands for you're annual holiday !! She said it was her 40th and she was only 40 once !! It's amazing how you can justify the things you pay out for, even though I didn't disagree with any of them, they thought us taking 5 months off work was the best one !! There were also some other people from the US and Switzerland and a couple of groups from New Zealand. We had a wonderful time, we snorkelled and saw The Giant TreVellia and huge giant Clams, with linings of bright blue and emerald green around it and sea turtles. Honestly, it took you're breath away, just beautiful. The water was as clear as a celophane bag !! we had a BBQ on board with all local salads and fruits, sitting in the middle of the
Lagoon. We don't think we have ever had lunch in such an amazing location, (well we have, happy to say lots of them). We saw the old airstrip which was in the sea where the airline 'Teal', now known as Air New Zealand and the likes of John Wayne, Marlon Brando and Katherine Hepburn, amongst others, flew in. We were taken to a couple of other islands, where they filmed 'Survivor and 'Ship Wrecked'. Paul gave us presentations on Hermit Crabs and Coconut Crabs (a lot to know about these things !!) and gave another presentation on coconuts and Island birds, walking us into the middle of one of the islands to show us. It was such a fun day, it went too quickly cos the next thing, we had to get back to the airport to catch our plane back to Raratonga. When we landed we were glad we did, can't say the plane was great but ok for little planes !! We then got a lift back to our bungalow, quick shower and off to another BBQ at a beach bar right on the beach. English couple own it, had a great time there stuffing ourselves yet again,
sloshing back the wine, watching the sunset go down. Damn right, PERFECT, to end the day !!
Promise all the photos will go up once I have more wi fi (free).
EHHHH, never want to leave here !!
Aitutaki has a population of around 2,000 people, there are no dogs allowed on the island, and it has 14 Motu (islets).
Oh yes, Paul said he would take us to the smallest post office in the world and get our passports stamped with 'One Foot Island' in Aitutaki Lagoon. We were quite excited about that, so what did he do, he opened up a tin on the boat which had a stamp in it, said 'bring you're passports this way'. So very funny, so that's what we did and he happily stamped our passports.
