Sunday was again a relatively boring day. Australia is so big that you cannot expect big attractions every day. The problem was that we were optimistic and instead of driving directly to the next attraction we stopped in places on the way, hoping to see nice things. For example we went to 90 miles beach (not to be confused with NZ's beach by the same name), because the map showed that the road is on the beach and we imagined a spectacular drive... in reality we were close to the beach but didn't see it, and when we walked 5 minutes to it we saw lots of sand dunes but nothing really amazing. Well, the only interesting view was the waves, they came in diagonally - not parallel to the shore line. I have never seen ... read more

Aboriginal Dancers - Steve Irwin - Dreamworld What on Earth do these things have in common? Sure, they can all be found in Australia, but the thing they really have in common is Fun, Fun, Fun! We definitely had fun on our last week in Australia. The last night we were in Cairns we went to The Tjapukai Aboriginal Dinner Show. The buffet dinner was excellent but the real fun started when the dancers took the stage. The mixture of thought-provoking storytelling dances with humorous songs and skits were brilliant. We even got a lesson on how to play an aboriginal musical instrument called the didgeridoo. Our last few days in Australia were spent around Brisbane. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see the Australian Zoo. As Steve Irwin might say “CRIKEY” it is a ... read more

Here we are again back from our trip up north with loads more piccies and over 3500 miles under our belt! We had a fantastic time on the North West coast managing to reach as far as Exmouth. The North West was very different from the south west looking more typically Australian the further we went. It was very beautiful with its vast open spaces, Wild West style canyons, tropical turquoise seas and arid bushland. The roads are straight, flat and very long. The further north we headed the less cars we passed so much so that it becomes an event to see other cars, thus everyone waves to each other as they pass! The road trains also get longer the further away from town you travel. These huge trucks pull three or more massive trailers ... read more

On Friday we got up too late for a change and therefore had to alter our original plans for a long hike that day. We went to the Info center in Cooma and they told us it was going to rain in the afternoon and snow at night and we might not be able to hike also the next day :-( So we started with alternative plans for that day and we made a driving tour in the national park of the Snow Mountains. Of course, there was no snow at that season and in fact the entire tour was pretty boring. We went to one thermal pool but discovered that it was only 27 degrees. Is that thermal???? But in the evening as we approached our destination - Thredbo - we passed through an area ... read more

Well, I've got a few entries to put in, so I've decided to do them in the correct order, starting with my b- day in Brisbane. After leaving Sydney in April, I went up the east coast to Byron Bay. I met some awesome people there, some that I feel I can now call my best friends! I had an amazing time there! After that I headed up to Surfers Paradise, which was a bit of a dissapointment after Byron....I only stayed there for two days before making my way to Brisbane to meet my girls, Alys, Jaimie and Ali for my 24th birthday. On the bus up I bumped into Stephan, the German guy I met in Byron Bay. We exchanged emails, and talked about travelling together. For my birthday we had a girl's day ... read more

Cairns or Cans? Why is a city spelled Cairns pronounced Cans? After spending a fantastic week there we still don’t know. Maybe it’s because they have words without an R that they stick an “R” sound into (ie cinema is pronounced cinerma). We DO know that Cairns has warm tropical breezes, a lush green rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef right in it’s front door. So who really cares how they spell it? As we already shared, the first thing we wanted to see was the reef, but there are many other things to see and do around Cairns. The Rainforest Cable car is a thrilling way to see the tropical rain forest from the tree-tops. We were able to exit the car twice for walks along the forest. At the end of the line we ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Sydney Airport April 29th 2005

The Headaches of Travel Now I'm in Sydney, Australia and the journey to New Zealand has ended. Last night was a nightmare! Because I had a 6am flight this morning, I took the bus to the airport the night before because paying for a few hours in a hostel would have been pointless, right? Besides, that's what I get for jumping at the cheapo-ticket deals. Unfortunately for me, the airport closes at midnight, leaving me in a bad position all loaded down with my bags, in need of a shower and feeling extremely grumpy. I had a feeling that this could have happened but a person can hope, right? Finally one of the guards accosted me by the bathrooms. Apparently they'd been watching me on the cameras the last few hours wandering aimlessly about the ... read more
