It was suggested to us today to continue our blog. It will give our friends overseas a chance to see a bit of Australia and keep our local friends up to date with our movements. (Thanks Larni) We certainly aren't going to give the detail that we did while we were traveling. For one thing we are far too busy socialising and for another most of it is much too mundane! However, the week after our return saw us heading down to Margaret River with Pat and Jack who'd come to visit my mother and us all the way from Canada. The first day we drove to Margaret River and whilst Rags was recovering from the long drive, Pat, Jack and Judy visited just about every shop in the township. The following day we toured south ... read more

Hello all! As with my parent's visit, we and Emily headed 'down south' to the land of caves, big trees, whales and wineries. Busselton Our first stop was Busselton and it's absurdly long jetty. We had a swim in the comparatively calm sea (the shore here sits in a big bay and faces north instead of West like everywhere else around here) before deciding to tackle the 2km walk along the jetty and the underwater observatory at it's end - until we found out the price, then decided it wasn't worth it! So instead we went on a water slide that cost 10 dollars for us all to ride once. It was old and rusty and didn't look too impressive but it was pretty good and we shot down so fast we felt in danger ... read more

During our second week in Dunsborough, we saw plenty of beaches and Mummy and Daddy visited yet more 'cellar doors' in the Margaret River region - flaming alco's. All of this was concentrated between the 2 Capes - 'Naturaliste' in the North and 'Leeuwin' in the South - the most South-Westerly point in all of Australia. The Cape Leeuwin lighthouse is one of the big attractions down here and Dad wanted to visit this as it stands on one of the 3 big Capes in the world (along with Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope) and recognised as a milestone for around the world yachtsmen when battling through the Southern Ocean. The brilliant blue skies and strong winds seemed to set the right mood. We also visited the small town of Augusta which is ... read more

After buying our groceries for the journey (cereal and noodles - we're trying to start budgeting now and being true backpackers) we head to the Easyrider office for 7.15am. Whilst we're checking in for the coach the office phone rings and goes straight to answerphone, the office is a bit noisey so we can't hear the full message but somehow Diane manages to pick out the word 'murder' from the message - not a good thing to hear when we're about to go on the road! Our driver is late arriving and we find out it was actually him phoning the office, he was stuck collecting at one of the hostels as the police had cornered off a park behind it. He didn't know exactly what had gone on but suspected it was some kind of ... read more

Next day we headed to Margaret River, where we spent 2 nights in a luxurious (for us!) chalet, with two bedrooms, a living room/kitchen and the whole kaboodle! Over the two days we spent in the town, we visited Mammoth Cave, the largest of the caves in the area. It was, as the name suggests, rather large, and pretty spectacular. We also went to the sunday market, a cheese factory, a small vegetarian restaurant - so small that the four of us half filled the place! - for Ben's "christmas dinner", (we'll miss ours with our respective families this year!) and a local brewery, where we sat on cow fur seats and crowned Ben's mum as champion beer taster! We decided not to visit any more caves. but we did go to "Caveworks", pretty much a ... read more

Brochure Text: • Margaret River • Aboriginal Centre • Busselton Jetty • Dolphin Discovery Centre Awakening to a wonderful misty southwest morning we rise to the sights of kangaroos and emus which are abundant in the area. Heading North West, we journey to the famous wine and surfing region of Augusta & Margaret River. The spectacular limestone coast winds its way to the mouth of the Margaret River. Nearby, waves from the Indian Ocean wash onto the pristine beaches, home of the world famous WA Masters Surf Championships. We continue to the Wardan Aboriginal Centre where we learn about the early tribal Aborigines, the Warandi people. Hear about the amazing ‘bush craft skills’ used by the original people who thrived in the district for thousands of years. After lunch, we enjoy wine tasting at an exclusive ... read more

Day 225 (05.11.07) Having had a bit of a lazy morning we dragged ourselves out of bed and grabbed a bit of brekkie. We had nothing planned for today but a bit of a wander around town and planning the rest of our time here in Margaret River. We went into town and stopped off at the tourist information where we got the details we needed and made some calls to book our activities for the following days. Job nearly done, as we still had to ring that afternoon to confirm some elements, we went to the supermarket for a food shop. On our way home however we did make a stop at the 'fudge factory' at the top of town. Taking full advantage of the free tasters (returning at least 5 times before we left) ... read more

Sunday (6th Oct) saw us drive 300km or so south from Perth down to the Margaret River area. To help us find our way, we stopped at a service station to buy a map but it turned out to be a pointless exercise. A map of WA is pretty much made up of 99% of vast outback nothingness and 1% civilisation. (I hadn’t realised that of the 2 million people who live in WA, 1.5m are in Perth with the rest spread very, very thinly across the rest of this massive state). I am over simplifying a bit (but not much) when I say the “road network” consists of one highway that snakes its way down the coast and not a lot else. The thought of paying $8.99 for something as basic as this didn’t appeal ... read more

Family holidays are never like a-walk-in-the-park for me. It can be tiring if not stressful at times. When Mom suggested that we all meet up in Margaret River for a family holiday/reunion, I was not all that enthusiastic. For a start, we agree to disagree with a lot of things in life. Anything from politics, religion, gender-issues, economics, culture and basically almost everything. But that's how it is like for us, we disagree and get on with life. We all flew in and met up in Perth in a homely little holiday apartment located at Mounts Bay Road. The place overlooks the beautiful Swan River with a jogging trail along the scenic river. The Old Swan Brewery is just right down the road. When I arrived in the apartment, my folks were already making themselves at ... read more
