Craig and Ross in ISO_2.0 Episode #2 Thursday July 23, 2020. Last night, I spent the better part of 10 minutes trying to scrub some crud off a glass baking dish, only to realise the crud was on the other side. We need to buy a dishwasher! Such are the banalities of Melbourne ISO_2.0. We are now two weeks down. Theoretically, 4 weeks left of this six week lockdown. But.....well, who knows? It could be more, given recent COVID case numbers. I never thought I’d say this, but seeing the football on TV in recent weeks has brought some sense of normality and comfort to me. I’ve never followed it, but it has always been there in the background. It is a constant, something you can depend upon, like the sun coming up each day, or ... read more

Craig and Ross in….ISO. Episode 1 (Saturday July 11, 2020). It was dear Shell Greyhound (aka Michelle Edwards) who put the idea into my head. She missed my travel blogs this year and suggested I blog about my time in isolation. Hardly riveting reading, I thought at first. But then I mulled over it and decided it would be a fun thing to do and, if nothing else, it would give me some amusement during ISO_2.0. So, here goes…. Living as we do in Melbourne, Ross and I have become old hands at this COVID-induced isolation thing (ISO). We have been more or less house bound since mid-March. All face-to-face teaching at the university had ceased, and lab-based research significantly wound back as well. I had not lost my job and had been lucky enough to ... read more

On the road again through to Bright fell in love with this place and will come back for their big car show they have in November !!!! Very much like our Arrowtown and a popular winter Mecca for them I would guess.... Katy Perry is performing here tonight for the Bush Fire relief .... town was buzzing and had a good look around spending a good part of the day here. Had brunch around 11am again at another bakery and purchased a few goodies from the gift shops. Around 1.30pm we pulled out and onto Milawa travelling through drier country, vineyards and cheese making outfits, found Brown Brothers Headquarters and did some wine tasting a huge operation here and purchased some wine and souvenirs. About 4pm we rolled out through to Wangaratta and checked into Parkview ... read more

A good nights rest and packed up headed out at 9 am started on the Alpine Highway and climbed up through lots of valleys and good farmland. Stopped at Omeo and found another bakery which seem more popular in South Australia instead of Northern Australia suits Don for his pies.... had a coffee and a wander around not much happening and quite a small place. At midday we carried on the road becoming really windy and more scrub than trees, drove into a village called Dinner Plain ... a huge Ski resort, never realised Australia had these and high Alpine areas boy what a surprise to find 10 km up the road the Ski Fields Mt Hotham ... quite an operation and very high .... I almost couldn't drive over the top 1861 metres and down ... read more

Didn't really stop but carried onto Bairnsdale not far away ... more good looking farm land and a cool southerly nip in the air. Found accomodation in Bairnsdale and had a pre dinner drink wandered down to ... read more

There are some days here that have pasted twice...... I’m loathe to delete anythin in case delete it all. I hope you can find the relevant bits, happy readers! Photos are actually from Hobart. But more of that next time, with Hobart news. Day 12 Brisbane 2 Sunday 23rd February, 2020 As we couldn’t get on the river cruise either day we decided to stay onboard today, with just a visit to the cruise terminal shed to pick up emails and post last few days news. I managed to download some emails, send a few what’s apps upload photos onto the blog......and then the WiFi went down! Annoying to say the least. I thought I had clicked on something I shouldn’t have done, but then realised what had happened. Later one of the other ladies who ... read more

GOR. Day 20. Warburton Our last day of this tour. A 1 hr train journey to Lilydale to ride the old railway line trail to Warburton and back. A cloudy start but warm and what we would want for the finale. The trains in Australia are good for cyclists since bikes are no problem at. All 12 of us got on the same train to Lilydale whereas in the UK you are lucky to get 2 bikes on. The MYKI card system is also good in Victoria where you buy a card and load it with cash and travel anywhere, paying a maximum of approx $6.50 per day (£3.50). The trail was a bit lumpy all the way with a stiff climb to Mt Evelyn at 7km on a mixture of gravel, concrete and tarmac. Lunch ... read more

GOR Day 19 Melbourne Day off today in Melbourne city. The second time up the Eureka Tower and just as good as the first time with brilliant views on a cloudless day of all the surrounding buildings, river Yarra and the coast. A cruise ship was in the harbour along with the Spirit of Tasmania ready for its evening departure to one of my favourite places. Next was a visit to the Botanical Gardens but were waylaid by the amazing building that is the Shrine of Remembrance. It is like a labrynth inside with excellent exhibits of all the conflicts involving the Australian forces. I would recommend a visit to this by anyone. The Botanical Gardens are also a must see with the extensive variety of plants and trees including the inevitable bird life. We saw ... read more

GOR Day 18 Parkdale Cool start again but getting to like the no rain forecasts. The food served by Phil Bock and his lovely wife Yuko at the French Island Eco Lodge is first class and enough for cyclists who normally take some filling. The wine is good too and not extortionate. A koala was grunting up a tree outside our cabin at 7am, which was a nice surprise to start our day. Ferry crossing at 9am on a smooth ocean to Stony Point to resume our journey north to Melbourne. Son Paul met us on his bike at the terminal since his wife Kat brought him in the car. Great ride to Hastings along a lovely boardwalk through the mangroves and dunes under a clear blue sky and warm sun. Coffee in Hastings at the ... read more

GOR Day 16. French Island Out into the blustery cold went the Draughty Dozen to be transported to the heaven (to some)that is French Island on the morning ferry. Eventually we found the Eco Lodge and left our panniers before venturing out into the wash board dirt roads. The island store reminded me of a shearing shed but produced some good sandwiches and proper coffee as well as being the island ???? Office. I imagine a life saver utility on such a remote/barren island just 3 km from the mainland with no services provided. They all have to generate their own electricity, find water and create their own water disposal systems. The roads are something else. Soft sand throws you on the bike, the washboard rattles your teeth and the puddles are a swimming bath in ... read more
