Blog 1 Day 1/ Day 2 - March (Our 7th) - (Aus.8th) Our friends Brian & Lois picked us up and we left Waterloo with a light snow falling only to have it disappear as we got closer to Toronto. Finding the right area for the Cathay Pacific desk in Terminal 3 was a bit of a challenge. They don’t have many flights using Toronto so they don’t have a permanent desk location and therefore move around accordingly. We used one of the automated check-in kiosks and succeeded in: getting checked in, printing our boarding passes printed all the way through to Melbourne, and luggage tags. Then we set off and walked the length of the terminal once again to get our luggage weighed and sent on its way to the plane; we don’t have to ... read more

Blog 2 Melbourne, Aus. - March 10, 2018 – Weather: sunny with a high of 32°C We woke up around 6:00 am feeling fairly refreshed. Before breakfast I took a short walk around the area then off to breakfast. The evening before we had arranged for a shuttle to drop us off at the airport where we caught the Skybus. This is a low-cost shuttle service that uses double decker busses to transport passengers to/from the airport for $19 each one way. Far less expensive than what it would cost to take a taxi to drive the 30 km to the center of the city. Another advantage of using this service is that they provide a free hotel shuttle from the station to drop-off locations near your hotel. Our shuttle driver provided directions and after a ... read more

Blog 3 Melbourne -March 11, 2018 – Weather forecast: clear with a high of 36°C; in reality it is partly cloudy, windy with a temperature of 22°C We woke around 6:30 a.m. well rested and got ready for a relaxing day; we don’t meet up with the tour group until 4:15 this afternoon. While Brooke showered I went for a walk to see if I could capture photographically some of the sights we saw yesterday but without the crowds blocking the view. Before I had returned Brooke had scoured the Internet to see what was open on a Sunday. Several of the locations that we wanted to see are open but are fairly costly so we opted to go and visit a number of locations that open free of charge. Our first destination was the Victoria ... read more

Melbourne is the second most popular city in Australia and Oceania and it is easy to see why. With the CBD (Central Business District) in the centre and the city spanning out it all directions Melbourne really does have everything. Before Europeans arrived in the area it had been occupied by three Aboriginal tribes: Wurundjeri, Boonwurrung and Wathaurong. The area was an important meeting place for them as it was a source of food and water. The first European settlement was established by Colonel David Collins in October 1803 near Sorrento but the ground wasn’t suitable for farming so the settlement moved to Tasmania in February 1804. It was another 30 years before another settlement attempted to stay in that area. In May and June of 1835 John Batman claimed to have purchased 600,000 acres from ... read more

The start of another long overseas trip and this one will take us right round the world. This trip sounds adventurous but should be relatively straightforward as most of our planned destinations are 1st-world destinations. We're starting off with about 6 weeks in Canada, primarily for skiing. We aim to visit 4 or 5 separate resorts in this time which should be enough to experience Canadian skiing; After that we will head south chasing the better weather and self-drive down the west coast of the US. I have always wanted to visit San Francisco. From there we will go overland through Mexico and Central America and should have time to be able to do it justice before the northern summer and the hurricane season begins. After that we plan to fly to Europe via Iceland - ... read more

25/2/18 We cleared up the rented house and started back to Melbourne. We said goodbye to the Wilson Promitory and the Bunurong National Parks now understanding why they fully earned their protected status. The weather is rainy and the temperature is 12 degrees C which feels decidedly chilly. We have been monitoring the weather back home and we know we are in for a cold shock when we land. We do not have big coats and very warm clothes with us so expect to be ill prepared. We stopped after about 10 kms. for a good breakfast at a cafe that was open on a Sunday morning and was doing really good business. We arrived back at the appartment in the early afternoon and busied ourselves with catching up with washing and blogging. We all went ... read more

22/2/18 Today we deliberately set out to have an easy day. We got up and had a leisurely breakfast an decided to walk down to Acland Street in St. Kilda. We went via the beachfront and noticed that the sea was flat calm and the beach was almost deserted The C. O. always on the lookout for kit improvement, decide that she should check all the boutique type shops along Acland Street. She diligently worked her way up and down the street. I did not object as Acland Street has thoughtfully provided many seating areas for shopping exiles. I was happy to watch the world go by and I noticed that there appeared to be a lot of cruise passengers who were stickered or labelled strolling down the street. It probably means the cruise ships run ... read more

20/2/18 Another bucket list item today. We felt we needed to spend more time in Melbourne city centre so the C. O. organised a plan of attack and I was briefed with the main details. We trammed into the Crown Casino stop on the South Bank Of the Yarra River in central Melbourne. We then caught the hop on / hop off bus at a stop we would never have found but for a helpful man in the huge Convention Centre. There was no bus stop evident and the website did not give an exact location. Our experience of the hop on / hop off service, in Melbourne was the worse that we have encountered. The buses are old and would not pass U. K. emission tests and the bus stop map is inexact and the ... read more

18/2/18 Express Delivery We left our hotel in Hobart at 8:30 hours arrived in the apartment in St. Kilda (Melbourne) at 12:30 courtesy of Uber and Jetstar transportation even though we had to take a longer route to the airport as the main bridge, out of Hobart, was closed to traffic for a fun run. Chilled out in afternoon after unpacking kit from pods. Charlotte and Ollie getting ready for work so tried to keep out of way. Caught up on blogs. I have worked out that the best way to keep cool in the Australian summer is to go to Tasmania. 19/2/18 Bucket List We are conscious that we only have one full week of our deployment left and still a lot of activities to try and fit in. C. O. has ordered a route ... read more

10/2/18 It's Saturday, so a bit of a lie in. I needed a haircut, in order to conform with regulations, so we all went to a shopping area and I was booked in for a "buzz cut" at "Edward Scissorhands". The others did something else. We all met up for lunch and the C.O. took the opportunity for some retail therapy. She bought a top from a shop selling posh gear, the cost of which is still a closely guarded military secret. The budget was not mentioned. The boys and girls were going separate ways this evening. Ollie and I had tickets for the Melbourne Cricket Ground (M.C.G.) for a "big bash" cricket international match between England and Australia. The ladies had booked to see a show called "Priscilla" which sounded very dodgy entertainment for impressionable ... read more
