Sunday morning was again leisurely spent in Adelaide. There's not a lot to do here but I like the city. I went to the South Australia museum. It's the same type like Australian museum in Sydney - combination of nature and Aboriginal art. I was shocked by the human skeleton of Max - see the pictures - even if the guy donated his body to science it means you go and put him in a museum?? However they had one magnificent exhibition of nature & wildlife photographs from some photography contest. They had some amazing photos. I wish I could put some here but of course you are not allowed to takes photos there because of copyright laws. I almost bought the book but it was 60$ and very heavy... it's not a backpacker's book... In ... read more

Traveling in a foreign country for a long times means also learning something about its past and its people. So I went to the migration museum of South Australia here in Adelaide. I saw there a tiny exhibition that is not really relevant to migration, but felt very relevant for me. They "celebrated" here ANZAC day 2 weeks ago, on 25/4. I didn't know that 25/4 was the day the invaded to Turkey (then the Ottoman Empire) 90 years ago in World War 1, with British and French forces. This was a horrible battle, lasting many months, with heavy losses on both sides (about 90,000 Turks and 44,000 allies). The exhibition was called "Gallipoli - A Turkish view". It shows the other side of the war. In those days the Turks were the enemy. For me ... read more

After the great ocean road we approach the last part of our trip - crossing the border to the state of South Australia and driving to Adelaide. We still have over 500km to go. The biggest attraction on Thursday was right next to Warrnambool. Korhan spotted that really by chance in one of my tours brochures - Tower Hill state game reserve. I don't really understand what a game reserve is (especially that they had a big sign prohibiting hunting) but it was full of Australian wildlife. We woke up at 6AM to arrive early when the animals are still active. Driving there was like driving in a safari - kangaroos, wallabies, emus all over, and we even spotted Koalas on one of the trees, sleeping high above us. It was a fun place! From there ... read more

I think this is a wallabie, not kangaroo - but I'm not sure

There is a big joke in Australia for people who live outside Adelaide. Adelaide is a sterile, boring place. Well it just so happens that my cousin, Tracey, lives in Adelaide and, of course, protests these claims. She invited us to go there and see that it isn't as hackneyed as everyone makes out. My brother Az and I set off for Adelaide on 22nd April. Once we arrived, I was actually a little concerned if I would even recognise my cousin. (I hadn't actually seen her for 18 years) But we both seem to recognise each other and it was all good. Tracey started, straight away, to make Adelaide as exciting as possible. She pointed to the right out of the car and said "Over there is a good place to go out and is ... read more

Hi there all the new people that have been added to our Travelblog list, and sorry to those that I have been practising on over the last few months!! Well the count down is on I guess as we both finish work Friday 15th April and fly out of Roxby on the morning of the 20th April. First hit and run stop will be Singapore on our way to Japan where we will spend a few days near Osaka and then Tokoyo. From there its off to the UK, Europe, USA and Canada, but more about that as we travel. Joshua and Kaleb have promised to do several things for us while we are away, so I guess this will be a big test for them to. Feed the dogs, birds and fish. Pay the bills ... read more

The night before my final departure from South Australia, we engaged in a game of South Australia Trivial Pursuit. To our dismay, team Ossian and Katie answered the first two questions correctly. In one hour 3 teams had actually managed to collect a total of 7 pie pieces. It's amazing how much we have learned-some of us more than others! Saying goodbye to the Aussie 7 was even more difficult for me than exchanging farewells with TMC. Not only was I saying goodbye to my home in Adelaide and the experiences of my time there but I was also saying goodbye to six other amazing individuals. I never would have thought that all of us would have grown so close and gotten along so well (with very few "mishaps"--see list below). It was an experience of ... read more

Tuesday I said goodbye to my time at The Magdalene Centre. I cannot even begin to explain how difficult it was to part will all of the relationships formed over the past three months. I was and still am so honored and blessed to have had the great pleasure of working with and for a great group of individuals. My heart overflows with thankfulness for their openess, kindness, and hospitality. I was given a proper Aussie roasting which included a beautiful breakfast meal and an Aussie farewell sing along that Peter (my supervisor) wrote for all volunteers present to sing chorus. I was moved to tears and very much speechless. I did not expect to be honored in such a way...Peter shared a few words along with come other volunteers, everyone pitched in a purchased a ... read more

"Steggy" is short for stress-o-saurus which is appropriate since Aussies shorten words and names. Steggy was given to me at the footy match as a gift from Kameron. She thought I needed a little something to cope with the stress of leaving the group in a couple of days. So, not only will I use Steggy when things get tough but he will also travel with me throughout my remaining time in Australia. We (that is, Kameron and I) decided that I needed to take photos of Steggy over the course of my last month's travel. With that said, here is Steggy's first stop: AAMI Stadium.... read more

What a fabulous weekend. It was so nice to get out of the city and view the Barossa and a footy match. Footy is short for Australian Rules Football or AFL. It’s not rugby or gridiron (USA NFL football). The best way I can describe it is as a mixture between rugby and soccer. It’s very fast paced and the blokes are incredible athletes. Fortunately, we had tickets to the “big showdown”-Adelaide versus Port Adelaide. We decided to “go for” Adelaide which was lucky for us since they won the match. The stadium was packed full of very loyal Adelaide and Port fans...we attempted to fit right in. Do you think we pulled it off? Fun times! Diprotodon hunting at Redbanks was the mission. Redbanks is in the mid north of South Australia near Burra and a recent report had indicated that a fossil of a diprotodon had been excavated from this site. We hunted around and found a few interesting rocks, a large spider, a mine shaft, the remains of a stone hut, but nothing resembling a diprotodon. There are large red walls with many layers - it looked like there would be plenty of fossils. Link to more information about Burra and Redbanks... read more
