We did a 3 hour walk today starting at Waterfall Gully, past Chinaman’s hut and up to Mt Lofty Summit. There were heaps of people doing this tough walk. Saw robins and a small golden and black bird. We went out on a side path on the way down which was very quiet. Nice views of the city. When the sun came out it made the water shine brightly. Cold, windy and wet. Walking around Adelaide. Cut short. Raining hard. I woke up at 6:45 and couldn't sleep anymore. I guess I'm getting used to all of these early morning wake up calls of the last couple of weeks. I lay in bed ‘til about 8AM waiting for Coles to open up so that I could get some food for breakfast. My roommate Laura also got up and we went over there together. We bumped in to Di on the way there. Laura and I met up with Di and Anna and attempted the walking tour of Adelaide that was listed in the Lonely Planet. We made it to the Art Gallery and the Southern Australian Museum. Both free! We all had packed lunches and since it was raining outside we headed over to the ... read more

Intense red sunrise. Hawker, Quorn & Adelaide. Bye to the Flinders. Another nice sleep in since it was another 8AM departure. Gotta love a good lie-in! Once on the road we did more emu spotting. Our morning stop was at the Klinyara Ruins which is a former settlement from "back in the day." To be honest I wasn't really listening to what Tanya was telling us about this sight... Since we will be arriving in Adelaide tonight and this is our last lunch together we all had left overs for lunch. I opted not to have a sandwich and helped myself to the salads instead. Driving (or in my case, sitting on the bus!) was a pretty easy day today. The group actually seemed pretty subdued. Guess when the two Canadians aren't talking the bus gets ... read more

Climbing Mt. Ohlssen. Cardio system tested. Big trek up and down. Wow! We got to sleep in ‘til 7 this morning since our departure time was set for 8AM. This morning’s task was to trek up Mt. Ohlssen of the Flinders Ranges. It was a bit of a steep trek up but worth it once we made it to the top. We encountered a couple of poisonous snakes in the bush and upon closer inspection there was also an echidna in the bush as well. Stupid Mr. Sleep-in decided to throw a rock at the snakes so we had to hightail it out of there pretty quick just incase they got irritated at "us" and decided to strike...what an idiot... By the time we got to the top, rested and took in the views and made ... read more

This was a sneaky walk hiding down the back of Flinders University. You went down some side streets to get to the track. It went steeply down to Sturt river which was flowing. Large rocks and gorges. Looks like the Flinders Ranges. Scramble up hill for view out to sea. Along a horse trail to suburbs and “back to where we started from”.... read more

Let's play some hangman Long day on the road again Will help pass the time. Apparently the girls next to us in the underground room were very noisy when they got back last night. There was only a thin wooden wall separating our rooms and Mandy couldn't take it anymore and asked them to be quiet 3 times. I was so "dead to the world" that I didn't hear any of it and didn't hear about the incident until we all woke up this morning! lol 6:30 take off. I witnessed yet another amazing sunrise. Not the most spectacular but always nice to see the reds and pinks in the sky. Opposite the sunrise the sky was striped blue, pink and blue. Apparently this was from the shadow of the Earth. First stop of the morning ... read more

The rains woke us up. Goodbye Amanda. Hi Tanya. Kangaroo spotting. I can't believe it started pouring rain at 3:30 in the morning. When it first started I thought I'd just pull the swag cover over my head and ignore the rain. But after only a minute it was pretty apparent that the rains were not going to let up. In fact the winds picked up as well. Some of us dragged our swags into the kitchen area while some others dragged their swags over to some of the empty tents. I decided against the tents since they were not checked out the night before and who knows what sort of nasty's lurk about in those tents! I was feeling wide awake by the time I got my swag into the kitchen and found myself a ... read more

This part of the trip was a grueller! As the title suggests, it's the equivalent distance of travelling from London to Moscow. We drove anything from 200 to 700 kilometres per day, Bertie the vamper can held out great and we ended up doing the leg really quickly, sightseeing included, 4 days! We stopped off at the Great Australian Bight and saw loads of Southern Right whales as they made their way up the coast to warmer waters. To call South Australia vast/desolate was an understatement, particularly a stretch called "The Nullabor Plain", no trees, just scrubland an bushes galore here. The roads were like an obstacle course, for 7 hours a day we played "Dodge the Road Kill", you literally had to weave between the kangaroos run over by Road Trains ( Massive 2 to 3 ... read more

We went to Onkaparinga for a very hard walk (4 hours) with lots of very steep climbs and descents (what goes up must come down). It was very dry, but at least there was some water and we heard a lone frog. An amazing place. Must go back. Got very high and looked down into gorge, then very steep down hill. Rock hop for about an hour and then up hill again. We were sore for days after this one! Link to more Onkaparinga information ... read more
