The rains woke us up. Goodbye Amanda. Hi Tanya. Kangaroo spotting. I can't believe it started pouring rain at 3:30 in the morning. When it first started I thought I'd just pull the swag cover over my head and ignore the rain. But after only a minute it was pretty apparent that the rains were not going to let up. In fact the winds picked up as well. Some of us dragged our swags into the kitchen area while some others dragged their swags over to some of the empty tents. I decided against the tents since they were not checked out the night before and who knows what sort of nasty's lurk about in those tents! I was feeling wide awake by the time I got my swag into the kitchen and found myself a ... read more

This part of the trip was a grueller! As the title suggests, it's the equivalent distance of travelling from London to Moscow. We drove anything from 200 to 700 kilometres per day, Bertie the vamper can held out great and we ended up doing the leg really quickly, sightseeing included, 4 days! We stopped off at the Great Australian Bight and saw loads of Southern Right whales as they made their way up the coast to warmer waters. To call South Australia vast/desolate was an understatement, particularly a stretch called "The Nullabor Plain", no trees, just scrubland an bushes galore here. The roads were like an obstacle course, for 7 hours a day we played "Dodge the Road Kill", you literally had to weave between the kangaroos run over by Road Trains ( Massive 2 to 3 ... read more

This road really blew us away, the scenery and drive was spectacular, the ruggedness and beauty of the coast just can't be captured on camera. We took a couple of days to explore, it was well worth the drive.... read more

We went to Onkaparinga for a very hard walk (4 hours) with lots of very steep climbs and descents (what goes up must come down). It was very dry, but at least there was some water and we heard a lone frog. An amazing place. Must go back. Got very high and looked down into gorge, then very steep down hill. Rock hop for about an hour and then up hill again. We were sore for days after this one! Link to more Onkaparinga information ... read more

On our drive back from Ceduna we stopped in on the 2nd largest monolith in Australia - Mt Wudinna! Although we were on a tight timeframe we scaled the giant for a great view of the other granite rocks about the place (like turtle rock). Plenty of bike tracks around. Saturday started with another amazing sunrise over cloudy sky in Williams Creek. Today we drove less than 200 km (but still on dirt roads) to the miners town Coober Pedy. I had big expectations from this visit - I heard it’s an underground town, built underground because of the very high temperatures in summer. So there are underground house (in fact the name means in Aboriginal “white man burrow”…), but there’s a lot of ugliness above ground. It looks like a Bedouin town in the Negev - all dusty, no sidewalks, no green. But we did have a good pizza for lunch and a good Greek dinner (many immigrants came there dreaming to become reach in the Opal mines), so how can I complain? And we slept in our own burrow - underground hostel! The highlight ... read more

On Wednesday I started my big outback adventure - 8 days in the Australian desert with Wayward bus and the guide-driver crazy Glen. In the morning the group met and we started doing wine tasting in Clare Valley - not really outback, just a good way to start breaking the ice. Getting alcohol was a major motive in the trip also afterwards - with an Aussie guide, 5 English, 5 Irish and other beer-drinking people, it was always fun in the bus. In the first day we drove 500 km to the Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges. That night I built my first tent in my life, and surprisingly it still stood up in the morning! Thursday morning started with a hike to Mount Ohlssen Bagge to have great views over Wilpena pound, that is ... read more
