Friday 20th October to Wednesday 25th October Day 1: Friday 20th October 2006 - Alice Springs to Kings Canyon ...and I'm off!! The next 'adventure' tour! Driving along the endless Australian roads has to be (strangely) one of the things I love about going on tour... I love looking at the landscape as we zip past. Today its black tarmac and orange earth, even 'peachy' in parts stretching out either side with the clumpy bushes, all various shades of dull racing green and the near on peroxide blond grass bundles. And hills. There are hills in the distance which wasn't exactly what I was expecting... Then again, neither was a random forest in the 'red centre'! There are trees growing on the sand dunes - which are orange! - How bizarre! They're Desert Oaks, they send ... read more

2006………6wks-4th CYCLING TRIP-Gujarat & Southern Rajasthan, INDIA........... Well I have been home a week now and have generally been enjoying it. My bed is really comfortable and it’s the same bed every night! I can have cereal for breakfast ('Cunflacks- yes!) and the coffee machine is appreciated. The train to work is unbelievably comfortable and empty. The garden is lush and full of flowers and produce ready to ripen. It’s nice to have a shower instead of a bucket and with hot water. The toilet doesn’t stink. The streets are organised, clean and quiet. The air is clean. It’s good to reconnect with friends and family. Cooking and cleaning is a bit of a drag although I enjoyed doing an Indian meal and using my new Chapatti rolling pin I got from a village in Kutch ... read more

I'm starting to feel like myself again, finally. That was one hell of a long flight. Two full days of travelling and airports. Ugh. LAX was super busy, obviously. We stood in line for an hour so we could check in for our flight. Afterwards, we went in search for food. We decided on McDonalds, since we didn't recognize any other place. Has anyone ever heard of Pibb? Cuz I sure hadn't. Apparently its like Dr. Pepper. I had to ask someone though. I had a bit of a freakout while we were waiting to board the plane. I calmed down after a little while, and Danielle and I went to line up. In the lineup, we realized that Danielle and I weren't seated together for the flight! Nowhere close, even. That was horrible. The longest ... read more

Our return to Cairns was filled with less scuffling than our previous encounter, this time our decision to seek out the local caravan park echoing a point Lucy had raised at the Parkview Guesthouse only a week earlier, ‘I’d rather sleep on the floor than in this s*#t hole!’ After pitching our tent we were shortly followed by Clare, Matt and James who were brandishing spanking new Didgeridoos that to the displeasure of the rest of the campsite were used to make an array of continuous noises synonymous with the outback. Dave’s valiant attempts that only managed to create noises synonymous with farting were applauded, but sadly he was left in the shadows by two-hour veteran didgeridoo players James and Matt. Although Dave prides himself in gaining a Degree at University, his technology based course had ... read more

I only stayed in Adelaide for a few days, and it did get very warm, however, I did not really get to see alot of the area, although it seems really nice and friendly. I think it would have been a good place to stop a while. I was soooo tired, slept alot and caught up with blogs and email etc. I also made some changes to my onward travel, felt I had wrapped things up too tightly, and no time to stay anywhere. I have cancelled the oz experience thing on the East coast, could not face 20 more days in a bus travelling and camping etc, right away (which i was due to do in two days time). It was also pointed out that this trip is popular with regular younger backpackers, as standard. ... read more

As we were a little short of our planned first stop at Lyndhurst we left early, to go up the Strezlecki track, aim to get to Innaminka for the second night and get back on track. Unfortunately we are obviously supposed to be learning something we have missed and 180km up the track we slowed down to help a broken down road train (after he tried to stop a previous 4x4 with no success!!!!!). We had at the same time noticed an odd noise and were also stopping to investigate. Trucky had blown a water hose - no probs as we are carrying a spare 50litres (unlike another car which stopped and only had 5 between two - hope they don’t have a problem). We got trucky back on road, he and Steve worked out the ... read more

DARWIN Following and excellent flight with Sky west (from Broome - Darwin) scones, jam and Cream to eat, Yum. Arrived in Darwin to a time difference of 1 1/2 hours forward and even hotter climate. Transfer from airport to the Cavanagh was straightforward, and hassle free. The Cavanagh however is semi backpacker and semi Motel (with public bar overlooking the pool), The result is that it is neither one or the other. The kitchen turned out to be sadly lacking in care and attention, but the bonus is that I was upgraded and have a TV, fridge and tea making facilities in my room. Darwin has several memorial to bombing by Japanese in Feb 1942, there are some World War II tunnels, but apart fromt that, little to offer the tourist in the town itself. It was ... read more

Introduction A couple of weeks ago we followed Ania's recommendation and headed to Chamber's gully for our walk - see . When we checked with her later, she said that she had seen our blog, but that we had gone on a different track than she normally took at Chamber's Gully. Apparently we needed to go out of the gully and up to the ridge top to get some good views and exercise (and avoid the bikes). We decided to give it a go. How to get there ... This walk is at the top of Greenhill Road - but for more information refer to our earlier journal entry . What happened ... This was a delightful walk - taking just over three hours. It combined some familiar areas but also added the climb as an ... read more

Hello to everyone and hope the autumn is not setting in too quickly! We have been zipping along again over the last 10 days, but also having some rest and recuperation for my birthday. We left Swan Hill and drove about 300km in all across the Little Desert Wilderness. It was not as bad as we thought it would be and the longest we went was 22 minutes without seeing another car - yes, we were counting!! It was pretty isolated, but lots of farm land/crops etc and also very scrub like in the areas that hadn't been cleared. While driving along we kept seeing the most bizarre lizards that were like big striped sausages trying to cross the road - some made it, some didn't...... We eventually arrived in a small town called Loxton, still ... read more

Introduction Adelaide has a lovely walking path-come-bikeway that runs for 35 km along the River Torrens from the hills, through the city and on to the sea, called the Torrens Linear Park. Dan and I joined Andrea, Julia, Brinya and Ania for a day of bike riding along the Linear Park, starting in the city and heading to the hills. You can find out more about the Torrens Linear park at Wikipedia. Bicycle SA supply a map of the path we took. Interestingly, the Park is url=http://www.planning.sa.gov.au/go/overview/legislation-and-regulations/practitioner-information/river-torrens-linear-park-act-2006 protected from future development. How to get there... We travelled to the city by train and cycled to the Adelaide Botanical Garden... read more
