Coming off the Stuart Highway back in Port Augusta, it comes as something of a shock to be in urbanised Australia again. It's only taken us a little over a week to drive to Uluru and back from here, but the contrast between Australia's (relatively) densely populated coastline and its almost void interior is a particularly strong one. It's scarcely believable that the boutiques of Melbourne and the outback share the shame country, but share it they do. We need to get back to Melbourne in a week's time or so but there's a whole lot of the route between Port Augusta and Melbourne that we didn't see on the way up. Our plan is to return to Victoria somewhat further inland - this should take us through some culturally (which includes, naturally, viticulturally...) important areas ... read more

Introduction This is one of the tougher walks we have done - our legs really ached the next day or two. It takes in a section of the Heysen trail that runs along Sixth creek in the Adelaide Hills, however this is done in 2 parts. If you are interested in walking the Heysen trail yourself then it is probably wise to join a walking group such as the Friends of the Heysen trail who provide guided walks for those who want to go end-to-end, or for those who want to just see sections. An example of an (potential) end-to-ender (and fellow blogger) is Jeremy from Prospect who is describing his progressive walking experiences on the Heysen trail. How to get there To get to the Sixth creek walk from the GPO head to the the ... read more

I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with R. Roadkill. As I mentioned it before it litters Australian highways to an absolutely astonishing extent. As we drove back along the Lassiter Highway from Yulara towards Marla, we kept a tally - to count as a fully-fledged item of roadkill, the body had to be entirely or partially on the road asphalt and had to be vaguely recognisable. Even with these stringent criteria, we counted more roadkill between Yulara and the Stuart Highway - several hundred kilometres of road - than we did cars. It's a wonder that there are any animals left around here...then again, kangaroos are considered pests in these parts and make up over 90% of the roadkill. Major highways running through the middle of the desert being rather thin on the ground, ... read more

Hi Folks Sorry to hijack Ronnie’s blog but the first few pics in Hong Kong are of just us and so the last from Perth and Singapore (as yet to follow), however we do pick up Ronnie in Sydney where we spent a few days eating, drinking, and doing the usual tourist things. Got to mention the dyslexic taxi driver who fleeced two old jet lagged people when he picked us up from Sydney airport and took us to the hotel. FCUK U. He charged us $65 when according to the nice girl in reception should have been about $20, what’s even worse is that I gave him a tip! Hong Kong was hot and our first impressions were “why have we come here”, it looks like Ipswich docks on speed. So many people and sky ... read more

Today we will be leaving the genteel world of wine-quaffing and cheese-tasting far behind. Leaving the ocean behind in the rear view mirror, we are heading due North towards the very centre of the Australia continent. Between us and our destination, Uluru - formerly Ayers Rock - lie thousands of kilometres of baking hot, dry and dusty outback and three days of driving. Three days that will hammer in the message, as if it needed hammering, that Australia is one very large country. Leaving Kapunda nice and early - the town's principal attraction is a giant statue of a Cornish tin miner (see later entry for the explanation) - we head in the direction of Port Augusta, supposedly the last settlement of any size before the immense expanse of the Southern Australian desert begins. The first ... read more

Wednesday 10/25/06 - Last full day in Sydney... ....by the time I had finished my last blog in the internet cafe, the sun had reappeared and I was off to meet Neets...who had decided to bag work and hang out with me :) Before long we were in her sexy little red Miata (Australians call them MX5s) with the wind in our hair as we headed west to the Blue Mountains. The Blue Mountains are over an hour west of Syndey, and the blue haze surrounding these mountains is due to oil vapor from the thousands of Eucalyptus Trees (Gum Trees) here. The views are breaktaking and the air here has you feeling refreshed and relaxed. We stopped off in the quaint little town of Leura for some coffee and cake before heading on a cliff ... read more

We make our way off the ferry back onto the Fleurieu Peninsula - next stop, McLaren Vale. One of South Australia's several world-famous wine producing areas, McLaren Vale is located only half an hour's drive south of Adelaide. The region is centred around a small town of the same name, and it's 60 or so wineries churn out bottles sold all over the world. The jewel in McLaren Vale's wine crown is a ruby by the name of Shiraz - this variety represents over half the production of the area. The remaining half is not to be sniffed at (unless it's just before drinking it), including Cabernet Sauvignon and some lesser-known varieties such as Viognier and Sangiovese. Naturally, it would be highly disrespectful to South Australians to drive through their state without sampling some of their ... read more

Just a quick update, since I'm tired. Going back to work has taken a lot out of me, apparently. I've been working in an office for the past two days, stuffing envelopes. The people there were SO nice, and I was quite happy, earning almost $19 an hour. I've been talking to this one guy who's given me a few ideas of where to go to have fun, since he used to live around Port Noarlunga. AND he's burning me a CD of Eskimo Joe. Its a band from Perth that I've been wanting to hear, so I'm really excited to go back next week to get the CD It took me two hours to get home from work yesterday, because the trains kept breaking down. They're so ancient, its a wonder they move at all, ... read more
