To break up the long drive along the Nullabor we stopped to see the southern right whales at the Head of the Bight. We walked to the viewing platform and watched the mothers and babies swimming around. It was really cold and windy so we didn’t stay too long. That night we stayed at Cactus beach which really was cactus. Our travel guide book said there were showers which was just a little brick unit with a cold shower in it. The next day we drove all day to get to Adelaide. We went straight to Darsh’s house and stayed there the night. It was so good to see him and his family. We woke up the next day and went for a walk to the local park and back. Then Ruchi made us a yummy ... read more

This time 3 weeks from now I will be in Mount Gambier airport, awaiting my rex flight to Melbourne and then heading off to Italy. I am so nervous and excited now. I can only imagine how much of a mess I will be 2 and a half weeks from now. I have to keep pinching myself to believe I am really going. I will be travelling as a mature age backpacker roughing it in hostels no set itinerary or agenda, just a copy of lonely planets guide to Italy and a rough idea of what I want to see. ... read more

The day started early with our next door neibours packing and leaving before 7:30am, gee what happened to being relaxed grey nomads on a Sunday morning. Never mind, we managed to pack up after breakfast in our own time, we set our sights on Portland for a look see before we headed to South Australia and Mount Gambier. No challenges along the way, but Portland didn’t present itself as the brochures suggest and didn’t keep our attention for long. We visited the Woolshed markets and left there heading for a Maccas for a coffee and banana bread. We left that Maccas with a decision not to return, the coffee was only warm and the banana bread was not warm, gee what is the world coming too? We chose the less travelled road to Mount Gambier and ... read more

Thursday 27th January and today we went back in time – half an hour to be precise! We left Portland and Victoria behind and drove the 80 kms or so into South Australia where there is a half hour time difference. Victoria is a beautiful state and we still have only visited a tiny part of it. As we left we hoped the expected flooding in Swan Hill in the north of the state wouldn’t leave too much damage. We stopped in a rest area just outside a little place called Dartmoor for a break – the surrounding scenery was similar to the Dartmoor National Park back home. This Dartmoor has some special features but unfortunately the rest area was just a little too far from the village to walk in to it and with the ... read more

Today we spent driving from Adelaide to Mount Gambier. We stopped in the sleepy little town of Murray Bridge to get maps and tourist guides for the Great Ocean Road. A woman there gave us lots of booklets on the area and suggested we take the southern "coastal" route from there rather than the highway, telling us that coastal routes are always more scenic. Well, after a couple of hours of seeing next to nothing we decided to turn inland a bit to the faster road. We hadn't seen any ocean at this point, but did see a pink lake and a green lake. The pink lake is due to a chemical produced by algae in the salt-water lake when water levels become low as a way to protect itself from UV rays. The green lake ... read more

well it is getting mightly close to that exciting day next week where i fly off to the other side of the world. its 11pm at night and i'm leaving tomorrow 4pm and i haven't even packed! silly silly girl as per usual leaving it to the last minute. have been having the worst little anxious feelings. freaking out about all those unknowns that i am about to step into. although i am very nervous i still have no intentions of holding back and cancelling my trip (as much as my nan is keen for that to happen) so its all set to go. i have received my confirmation email today regarding the visitation details for my sponsored child visit. i will be seeing aaron exactly on his birthday. he will be turning six years old ... read more

"it is better to travel alone than with a bad companion" which is why i am extremely excited to be venturing into the big bad world on my lonesome. the scariness is starting to creep into my soul. but that is not going to hold me back. this trip is about following my heart and not letting anything stop me. there are going to be a lot of people saying to me as i leave the doorstep of australia that they can't believe i'm actually doing this. i guess i can understand why their assumptions were of that nature but i wasn't going to let that stop me. watch me go.... read more

and the excitement hits a new high here i have received the piece of the puzzle i have been waiting a while for. the part that will decide just where my travels will end up. and for how long. that piece that could change my whole outlook and possibly even break my spirits. but of course it held up and i finally received the great email confirming my working permit for canada. woohoo that means i am able to partake in employed activities which will prolong my stay in the lovely country. and also ensure that i can complete my lengthy list of places to go. feelings to feel. and environments to enter myself into. aside from that information i have also completed my last booking for accommodation in egypt. meaning everything so far is booked ... read more

Day 265 - Mount Gambier Wakey wakey, rise and shine! Considering out late night we were up and with it at a reasonable time unlike some people who shall remain nameless!! We played with the girls for a little bit and of course with the gorgeous Harry who does the best commando crawl for a baby that we’ve ever seen. He crawls headfirst but manages to swing round every now and then to make sure you’re still watching, very funny. The older boys are great company too, easy going and don’t seem to mind the constant ribbing that we’re giving them. We have a little fan club in the two dogs Daisy and Wilbur, we absolutely love them and they’ve started to sit in the caravan with us for a bit of fuss and attention which ... read more
