6 - 12 June 2011 After a long drive from Yulara we stayed at Marla for a night before hitting the road again in the direction of Coober Pedy. We simply couldn't go to Outback South Australia without a visit to the opal capital of the world. It was an interesting place but not everyone's cup of tea I would imagine.. Driving into Coober Pedy was bizarre as there were mines for as far as the eye could see (some active, some no longer in operation). We visited the Old Timers Mine and did a self-guided tour, complete with hard hats and all! This part of Coober Pedy was the highlight - the tour was so informative and gave us a real life insight into how the miners lived back in the day. We could see ... read more

Ayers Rock to Coober Pedy The morning started at the fuel bowser – filling up 80.5L @ 180.6c/L. Shortly after leaving Yalara we came across Mount Connor – around 3 times the size of Uluru, easily mistaken by many overseas tourists on their drive in! The top of the mountain appeared so flat compared with Ayers Rock, as though someone had compressed it down as flat as the surrounding land. Further down the road there were many wavy red sand dunes which seemed stand out from the saltbush and Spinifex planes alongside the road, with various types of animal footprints and tracks to be seen. This day was a long drive along some very flat and open land, so we travelled big distances requiring a few fuel stops; Kulgera- 15L @ 190.0c/L, Marla- 90L @ ... read more

Tis us again! Well it’s now 10th May and we have sadly left McLaren Vale and said goodbye to our friends Alan, Justine and families. We had such a great time during the six or so weeks there. The five days on Kangaroo Island were magic with daily trips to see the sights. The funniest moments happened at “Little Sahara” giant sand dunes, where Alan discovered that his arms do not stay in sync with his legs when running down steep slopes!! He did a nosedive into the sand as a result. His young grandson Cody met with the same fate, followed by a great impression of a seal (boo hoo). We spent last Saturday night at “The Gov” in Adelaide, to celebrate Alan’s birthday and our leaving. Didn’t get home until 2.00am. Needless to say ... read more

Day 4 7am start again. Said goodbye to the Alice folk and headed to Emily Gap along the Ross Highway. We stopped there for a little breakfast. A long drive today and extremely tiring. I was only doing between 80-95km per hour. I felt rejuvenated when I hit the SA border. Fuelled up at Marla and bumped into a family having a sea change to Kunnunarra. The wife is going to be a trauma nurse there. We stopped frequently as well. We didn’t reach Coober Pedy until around 5.30pm. We pulled into P Deane’s Comfort inn and were pleasantly surprised to see Yianggo, Alayne, Grace and Nickolaos Amanatidis. Even more surprised when I found out there were working at the inn to help Debbie and P Deane for a few days. We were fortunate to be ... read more

Monday 11th April Travelled from Port Augusta to road site overnight stay at Bon Bon (164klms from Cooper Pedy) - very basic and close to the road but did the job. We were up early the next morning and only a couple of hours drive into Coober Pedy - booked into the Opal Inn Caravan Park for 2 nights - nice little park but a little cramped for parking of the caravan but right in town and easy to walk around. $27 per night with Top Tourist discount. 20c for 4 minute shower but water very good and hot. This is an amazing place with over 85% of residents living in the under ground homes - the temperature underground between 20 - 25 degrees all year round (it can hit the 40 to 50 degress above ... read more

Should anybody every decide to come to Australia and do a driving/camping holiday please remember to bring with you a good selection of music. Failing to do so was one of our mistakes and it was therefore with great enthusiasm that we set our early from Port Augusta heading towards Coober Pedy! Now, by my opening comment I'm not trying to imply that Australian radio is rubbish, it just simply does not seem to exist for large sections of the country, or at least not in the eyes or our radio. It is therefore a little boring to drive for about 6 hours straight without any music. This experience is not aided by the blistering hear in the cabin of the campervan, nor that you cheer whenever you see a corner which might happen maybe twice ... read more

After breakfast we treated Hilda to an oil and coolant change and some new spark plugs. I think she appreciated it as she started and ran like a brand new van. We set off about 1pm and made our first outback fuel stop at Spuds Roadhouse in Pimba. We had decided not to risk carrying extra fuel in the heat, instead planning to stop at every place available to fill up. There are long stretches of the Stuart Highway with nothing to look at apart from the outback, and today was going to be one of those stretches. The outback was however looking much greener than we had expected due to an unusual amount of rain in the weeks before we came. We stopped in Glendambo, with its population of 20 for the night. It was ... read more

Coober Pedy comes from an aboriginal way of describing the dugouts the miners lived in "kupa Piti" - white mans hollow. This is a wild bit of Australia!! Took to the air today to fly over Lake Eyre. First we did a fly over Coober Pedy so that our view to the "mullock" hills were fascinating. The small excavated mine sites looked like an ants entrance. The opal deposit runs for about 70km and the mullocks and holes are littered everywhere. It is something to behold. Think the 'sand - tuscan raiders - Jahwahs' from Star Wars and you are getting close. We then flew straight out to Anna Creek Station which is Kidman Cattle Country - taking up the same area of land as the country of Belgium. It is running 10,000 head of cattle, ... read more
