Coober Pedy is famous for the fact that everyone lives underground as it is the only way to keep cool in a place where the temperatures reach in excess of 50ÂșC during the day. At night however it was freezing, but it was a pleasant surprise to find that living underground has the opposite effect at night - it retains the heat and keeps you warm. One of the main problems with Coober Pedy, which is not surprising with it being in the middle of a desert is that there is next to no water. I could only get the smallest of trickles out of the tap to wash, shave and clean my teeth, and a nice refreshing shower was out of the question.
