I headed off in the direction of Coober Pedy in the glorious sun. It's now impossible to get lost or take a wrong turning as for the next 2000km it is one straight road, with the exception of Ayres Rock. This was the first day I truly experienced the 'outback'. Just a few minutes out of Port Augusta and the land opened up into a massive expanse of nothingness. Now and again the odd dead animal would break up the driving and I'd have to swerve to miss it, but other than that it was one very long drive. I stopped first of all at Hart Lake. Well it used to be a lake at some point in the past. It's now covered in salt. I walked a short distance onto the lake until I came ... read more

Today was arguably half of one of the most inefficient pieces of travel in recent times - I was to drive ~600km to spend a night in Coober Pedy, before coming all the way back tomorrow. With Coober Pedy being the opal mining capital of the world, one third of its inhabitants living underground, and the surrounding landscape providing a post-apocalyptic backdrop to films such as "Mad Max 3", it seemed a genuinely unique place to visit, so efficiency be damned. The road north from Adelaide was designed to be curvilinear, in order to give drivers a more interesting journey and prevent them dropping off. The countryside was impressive in its bareness - a lot of low scrub, occasionally with trees, and every so often a patch of startling red earth. Near Port Augusta there were ... read more

G' Day All It’s Anzac Day when we leave Port Augusta; this is when the Diggers, (Veterans) march in memory of their fallen colleagues in all the wars Australia has played a part in. I didn't realise that Australia came quite so close to being invaded by Japan during the last years of WW. If it wasn't for the help of the Papua New Guineans the Japs may have broken through. Coming down under and seeing the War Memorials in both NZ and Australia makes me realise how many gave their lives so that we can live as we are now. First stop on the way is Glendambo, for a top up of petrol. It has 30 people, and, well, see the sign for the rest of the information!! Little in the way of scenery, scrub ... read more

I can't believe I have now been to Coober Pedy. After so many months of wanting to go to this little town I now have! It had a quirky little atmosphere, with people's front doors being on the side of large rocks, leading you to an underground house...we did a tour in one of them and the temperature is just right, you can't hear any sound from outside, and it is completely pitch black with no lights, allowing you to sleep well at any time of the day. There are so many different nationalities living here, all in hope to pursue their dream of finding opals. (coober pedy is the world's capital for opals) I did a tiny bit of noodling, which is where you search in the heaps that they leave behind from mining, and ... read more

Rental car agents looked at us like we were going to a distant planet when we told them that we wanted to go to Coober Pedy. Many Australians never venture into the Outback. We don't quite understand why, it is such a unique place. So, with extra water, food, good maps, and a full tank of petrol we were off to the Outback!! This road trip truly was a journey into the secret, the weird, the amazing, and back to the urban. In 6 short days we saw an incredible variety of landscape, wildlife, and culture. The Secret: Our first night on the road was spent in the town of Woomera. This town did not exist on any Australian map until the late 1980s. The town existed; it was just a big secret because it was ... read more

On Tuesday morning we were allowed a lie-in (up at 5.30am) before driving back to the Erldunda roadhouse. Here, 10 members left the group (to go back to Alice) and 1 joined - leaving 9 of us to travel on to Adelaide. We spent the day travelling through some amazingly remote country stopping only at the South Australian border and then, many dusty miles later, for fish and chips at a roadhouse at Marla. That evening we arrived in Coober Pedy famous for Opal mining, 30m deep abandoned mine shafts (walking the opal fields in not recommended) and being the place where the people live underground in rock chambers in order to escape the heat (and continue their never-ending search for riches from the comfort of their own living room!). After a meal at a Greek ... read more

Left at 7am to go outback! Drove up and through Port Augusta first but then it was amazing how quickly if felt like the middle of nowhere once we turned onto the Stuart Highway which goes all the way up the middle of Australia. It's one hell of a big long straight road! It's great fun to drive - makes you feel like you're in a film. This area was still shrubby with the occasional lake (or layer of salt where a lake used to be) and distant table mountains which I still haven't worked out how they're formed. There was a roadhouse about every half tank of petrol - about every 200k. But we weren't even worried about breaking down - there was a car every 5 mins or so - it's really nice out ... read more
